Abstract:
The trans-boundary area between the Europe Union and other countries is highly susceptible to changes in water quality and variations in the potential pollution load that could influence its eco-systems significantly. The Neris (Viliya) River is one of the biggest surface water bodies in Lithuania and Belarus with an ecologically important area protected by international legislation. The study was aimed at evaluating the impacts of integrated pollution on water quality of the Neris River taking into account different storm-water flows and ecological scenarios. For this purpose, qualitative and

The paper discusses investigation into uncleaned storm wastewater pollution with heavy metals in Vilnius Žirmūnai district. The goal is to determine the dependency of storm wastewater pollution with heavy metals on transport intensity. After determining this dependency, sweeps from street points is experimentally studied with the most intensive transport flows. As the street sweeps together with storm wastewater are both outflow from streets and through outflow pipes directly to the Neris, heavy metals in the outflow pipe sludge are also studied for each pool. Historic parts of the city, Old Town, New Town, and the new buildings on Gedimino and Konstitucijos avenues form the city centre of Vilnius. These parts are situated on the opposite banks of the River Neris. The above mentioned avenues are the main streets and the river is the spatial axis of the centre. In the process of development of Vilnius city centre, the principal problems should be solved: 1. to further preserve cultural heritage; 2. to use a stable expansion in the development; 3. to strengthen the architecture and singularity of its natural surroundings in the city centre. Oxbow lake deposits of the Neris River at the Valakupiai site in Vilnius (Lithuania) have been studied by different methods including radiocarbon dating. A timescale was attained for the development of the oxbow lake and climatic events recorded in the sediments. 14C dates obtained for 24 samples cover the range 990–6500 BP (AD 580 to 5600 BC). Medieval human activity was found in the upper part of the sediments. Mollusk fauna found in the basal part of the terrace indicate contact between people living in the Baltic and the Black Sea basins. Mean rates were calculated for erosion of the river

Climate change leads to more variable meteorological conditions. In many Northern Hemisphere temperate regions, cold seasons have become more variable and unpredictable, necessitating frequent river ice observations over long sections of rivers. Satellite SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar)-based river ice detection models have been successfully applied and tested, but different hydrological, morphological and climatological conditions can affect their skill. In this study, we developed and tested Sentinel-1 SAR-based ice detection models in 525 km sections of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers. We analy

Urban development principles of the “urban hill” on the right bank of the Neris river, which now is developing rather chaotically, have major importance for further formation of Vilnius urban identity and for formation of qualitative image of the capital. This chapter follows Rivera’s story and the parallel story of the creation of the stage version of Tomás and the Library Lady in the context of Latinx outliers. While Pat Mora’s book portrays Rivera’s journey becoming a reader, González’s play is about Rivera’s journey becoming a writer. González’s play demonstrates how a fellow outlier helped Rivera break from the constraints of the stereotypes forced upon him and to find, through literature, a way to belong.
