Abstract:
This collection of papers records a series of studies, carried out over a period of some 50 years, on two aspects of river pollution control - the prevention of pollution by sewage biological filtration and the monitoring of river pollution by biological surveillance. The earlier studies were carried out to develop methods of controlling flies which bred in the filters and caused serious nuisance and possible public health hazard, when they dispersed to surrounding villages. The Ayuquila River watershed is important to western Mexico because of its biodiversity, physiography, fisheries resources, and water production. However, human activities are continuingly affecting natural resources within the basin. Soil erosion, as result of land use change, agriculture in steep land, extensive grazing activities and forest fires; and water diversion and pollution of the Ayuquila River are two relevant issues that have affected the natural resources of this watershed. This river system plays an important role in wildlife conservation, containing 29 fish species, of which 12

This thesis examines geomorphic processes that impact thermal stratification within floodplain lakes. Previously, thermal stratification was not thought prevalent in these numerous small water bodies, despite being found in small reservoirs. Thermal stratification leads to long term anoxia in the bottom waters and the release of metals and nutrients from the sediments. This can result in water quality problems such as algal blooms (including potentially toxic cyanobacteria), loss of fish habitat and deterioration of wetland habitat.
