Abstract Delineation of land is the creation of titles. Most of the dry surface of the Earth is delineated to some degree. The exact degree is predictable by a simple criterion of property-rights analysis: if the benefits are greater than the costs, then the land is delineated and a boundary emerges. The effect of delineation is a reduction in negotiation costs. Uncertain boundaries dampen the incentives to invest in land potentially under dispute. In such cases, ownership over the value added to the land may some day have to be negotiated. For example, no homeowner should enclose his yard wit

Bangladesh lies on the river delta formed as the Padma River enters the Bay of Bengal. Much of the country sits just above the water level and the topography is characterised by a vast network of rivers, some of which are several kilometres wide. In recent decades, the country has seen the need for development of its transport infrastructure to support its economic growth. A major challenge has been the design and construction of river crossings, which encounter deep scour channels and poor ground in these rivers. COWI has developed designs for a number of major bridge crossings in th

Abstract:
A minimum count survey of Dall?s sheep (Ovis dalli) in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve was conducted from July 18 to 20, 2023. The Preserve was last surveyed in July of 2018. The current survey examined the same 7 core survey units as the previous survey and the Ogilvie Mountains. In the core area (the 7 units most often surveyed), 70 sheep (32 ewes, 13 lambs, 6 yearlings and 19 rams) were detected. This constitutes a 75% decrease from the long-term average (284 sheep, 1997?2018) and a 68% decrease from the last survey (221 sheep, 2018). There were 40 lambs, 19 yearlings, and 59 rams pe

Full text
Abstract:
Long-term bird banding data were collected from 1996–2019 (except in 2008) to assess the New River riparian zone avian community in one location in New River Gorge National River (NERI). The NERI banding station has banded over 4,500 individuals over 10,700 net hours in the twenty-three years it has been in operation and has captured 80 different species. Total captures, capture rate, and total species have been declining annually over the study period. Species associated with early-successional/shrubland habitat also declined over the study period, which is consistent with regional trends dur

Abstract:
The Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (NGPN) began monitoring water quality in the Knife River at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site (KNRI) in 2013, with the assistance of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This report summarizes the data collected during the 2019 ice-free season (April 18 through October 31) for streamflow, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, and pH. This was the third season of continuous monitoring. 2019 began as moderately dry year until discharge on the Knife River peaked at 1,900 cubic feet per second in Septemb

Abstract:
The Overhead Cable System (OCS) serves as the main anchorage system of the Bridge Supplemental Set and is used to hold the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) against river flow. Several improvements have been made to OCS components and employment procedures, theoretically allowing the OCS to operate safely within most environments. However, the modernized OCS had yet to be constructed over an actual river, making it necessary to conduct a full-scale capability demonstration. Range W2 of Camp Ripley was selected as the test site because the 200th Multi-Role Bridge Company agreed to support the demons

Birds are prominent features of National Park Service lands and are effective indicators for monitoring ecosystem health. Assessing the temporal change of avian species abundance depends on long-term monitoring of bird communities and trends, however long-term monitoring programs are generally uncommon. The aim of this study was to suggest as many of the DAMS system requirements as feasible and finalise the preliminary list of items that should be covered by requirements and tests in the future DAMS technical annex.
