Abstract:
ABSTRACT This article explores Cambridge University librarian Henry Bradshaw’s development of tests for the authenticity of works attributed to Chaucer and his application of these principles to two disputed works: the Middle English Romaunt of the Rose and the Tale of Gamelyn. It makes use of unpublished archival papers and reconsiders historical editorial approaches using methods from the digital humanities to display and analyze Bradshaw’s data. After establishing the nature of these rhyme tests and the context of their development, I consider their later use by Walter W. Skeat in the Clare

Abstract:
Challenging contemporary orthodoxies, notably Derrida's perception of the actor as an ‘interpretive slave’, Richard Hornby here suggests that so far from exerting a tyranny, the fixed text provides a lifeline which the actor, having grasped, then makes his or her own. If a tyranny exists, it is that of the auteur-director who denies the actor the creative freedom that can be claimed from the text on the page. Richard Hornby is Professor of Theatre at the University of California, Riverside, and regular theatre critic for The Hudson Review. He is the author of six books and over a hundred artic

ABSTRACT This article highlights the accomplishments of a nineteenth-century American editor of Chaucer’s works, Arthur Gilman. It describes the nature of those accomplishments and situates them in respect to the Chaucer editorial activity of the time and to Gilman’s background. When Gilman’s Chaucer edition appeared in 1879, it was unprecedented in several ways, and for fifteen years it was the best mostly complete Chaucer ever produced. In particular, the edition, the first newly edited collection of Chaucer’s verse published by an American press, was also the first to make use of the outpou

Abstract:
Abstract Lionel trilling’s essay on Emma begins with the startling observation that, in the case of Jane Austen, ‘‘the opinions which are held of her work are almost as interesting, and almost as important to think about, as the work itself.’’ The comment is especially surprising in view of the essay’s origin as an introduction to the Riverside edition of Emma: rather than take readers straight into the novel, Trilling ponders the impossibility of approaching it ‘‘in simple literary innocence,’’ because of the powerful feeling generated by the name ‘‘Jane Austen.’’ Almost half a century later,
