Durch die Abnahme vorrangig der saprobiellen Belastung der Gewässer in Sachsen nach 1990 hat sich ihre Bestandssituation allgemein verbessert. Dennoch sind fast drei Viertel der 17 in Sachsen vorkommenden Rot- und Braunalgenarten als ausgestorben oder gefährdet einzuschätzen.
