A typical feature of the digital economy is the transformation of business models in all sectors of the economy under the influence of the development of digital technologies, the diffusion of different classes of artificial intelligence solutions. In the automotive industry, the driver of such transformations are unmanned vehicle control systems and the growing influence of the “mobility as a service” (MaaS) paradigm, which has gained particular popularity in recent years. The growing MaaS market and the shift of consumer value from the ownership model to the use model form a new mobility, ac

This paper discusses the evidence for “corpse roads” in early modern Britain. Corpse roads were route ways used by funeral parties to transport the deceased from the place of death to the place of final interment. In some cases, some routes took on localised symbolic or folkloric significance, and in a few cases, this is preserved in the present day in contemporary route names, tourism and on modern maps. This paper reviews the evidence for corpse roads, and the methodologies needed to interrogate that evidence. These methodologies are drawn from folklore, ethnology, archaeology and history. T

The original fieldwork presented here locates, identifies, and analyzes lost inns known as King’s Houses, government-owned inns established along military roads constructed by the British army throughout the eighteenth century. Evidence for routes in use in the early medieval period from documents and excavations is fragmentary, and from maps is nil, but place-names help to fill the gap. Known early roads, travellers and possible origins of place-names are considered before detailed examination of the place-names that consistently occur by routeways. Ways of measuring proximity of named settlements to routeways, including the chi-squared test and dispersion graphs, are described. The place-names are considered in detail. The road terms strǣt and weg yielded useful information; pæth and stīg did not. Gewæd and gelād i

Abstract A simplified road map of Britain in 1700 would make it clear that London was “metropolis” in more than overwhelming size alone. Like the hub of an eccentric wheel or the off-center core of an incomplete spider’s web, it sent off spokes, as it does today, to every part of the kingdom. Counting clockwise from east northeast around to north, the six main spokes were post roads connecting London with Harwich on the North Sea, with Dover on the Channel, with the West Country towns of Exeter, Plymouth, and Falmouth by way of Salisbury, with the principal Atlantic port of Bristol, with Chest

Maps and mapping are the manifestation of geography for the great bulk of the population. These play a key role in society and underpin many functions of the state. The situation is particularly marked in Britain, both in war and peace, where the Ordnance Survey (the country's national mapping agency) has been central to national mapping for more than two centuries. It is no exaggeration to say that mapping underpins many of the activities of society, especially in Britain. The restoration of the frontier in Britain required the allocation of additional military forces, and Hadrian instructed the building of a great wall just to the north of the Stanegate. Darkness discourages cycling. A major reason for this is perceptions of safety – cycling after dark feels more dangerous as it is more difficult to see hazards in the path, and the cyclist is less conspicuous to motorists. Are these perceptions justified? To find out we assessed the accuracy of such perceptions by analysing crash data from Great Britain to understand the risk darkness poses to cyclists. We found that darkness increases the risk of being involved in a crash, but we did not find darkness increases the risk of being killed, while cycling. However, we did find that the odds of a c
