Abstract:
Abstract. Lion roars are intense, short duration packets of whistler mode waves, observed in the magnetosheath. They are typically seen coincident with the magnetic field minima of mirror mode waves. The orbit of the Double Star TC-1 spacecraft (570 km by 78970 km, inclination at 28.5 degrees) is ideal for observations of lion roars as the spacecraft is in the magnetosheath more than 50% of the time when the apogee is on the dayside. The STAFF/DWP experiment provides the spectral matrix of the three magnetic components at 27 frequencies in the range 10 Hz to 4 kHz, with one second time resolution, and also the waveform up to 180 Hz at a low duty cycle. The characteristics of lion roars observed are reported. The maximum lion roar intensities appear higher than reported by most previous studies. The electron temperature anisotropy is estimated from the lion roar frequency ratios, and is in reasonably good agreement with plasma measurements. This indicates the presence of a trapped electron component in the mirror mode.

Abstract:
The road safety management methodology should be based on a system approach. This means that the road transport must be formalized as a complex system (CS), and then safety can be interpreted as an emergent feature of such a system. Road accidents should be interpreted as "organizational accidents". They should be studied using concepts such as "normal accident theory" (NAT) and "highly reliable organization" (HRO). The main purpose of the article is to show the usefulness of these concepts for the road safety and risk management, especially in Polish conditions. The system approach to road safety research (and transport safety) will allow for the better safety results.

Abstract:
AbstractIn rock historiography, Abbey Road Studios is depicted as the rock canon's ultimate recording house; home to the Beatles, Pink Floyd and a generation of classic rock album production. In recent years, the studio has struggled to maintain itself as an operational recording house, yet effectively exploits its past to secure its future. This article considers issues of heritage, pilgrimage and tourism before elucidating brand ‘Abbey Road’ as a conflation of geographical location, zebra crossing, graffiti wall, recording house and aura. In separating the tangible aspects of Abbey Road's heritage – the zebra crossing, graffiti wall and the Beatles Abbey Road album – out from its intangibles – its ‘magic’, legacy and studio ‘vibe’ – Abbey Road's studio aura is exposed as a commodity in its own right.

Abstract:
This essay proposes that W. G. Sebald’s distinctive contribution to the global novel is his reordering of the space of representation. This reordering is both literal and metaphorical. It is literal, in the sense that Sebald sets his work within actual spaces: the pages upon which his novels are written as much as the landscape being traversed by his narrator. It is metaphorical, in the sense that Sebald explores a set of imaginary spaces nested within each other: those occupied by his characters, who inhabit several worlds simultaneously, and that allocated to the narrative voice, which speaks to us out of a clearly demarcated yet unlocatable place. The result is not a troubling of the boundary between the real and the fictional, as many of his critics have contended, but a reflection on how the past continues to shape the present, forming the real and imaginative coordinates of our world.

Abstract:
We see, use and interact with different type of landscape every day. One of the important types is the road landscape we encounter during travel, whether a business trip, vacation or just on the way to and from home. Such landscapes can often help to introduce us to new regions or invite us to explore the surrounding areas because we partly experience the world around us from the road. Road landscapes combine important aspects of road and transport infrastructure as well as the quality of life of local people, traffic safety and tourism development. Road landscape development concerns both landowners and road users, each of whom might have different interests and understanding about possible landscape development and its consequences. Therefore, it is important to plan, discuss, present, and evaluate the future developments of any road landscape. The subject of road landscape has been little studied in Latvia. There are no recommendations on road landscape evaluation. Here we present a methodology for assessing perceptions of road landscapes. We aim to introduce several methods in combination that can be used in road landscape assessment, in order to show possible future developments of the road corridor and its surroundings and to test how potential changes might be perceived by road users. A combination of a case study approach, a scenario method, the use of 3D animations and of a web-based questionnaire survey are presented and discussed in the paper.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper we advocate an approach to road safety studies in which traffic conflicts are used as indicators of roadway hazard. The critical traffic process event used to define conflict severity is the time to collision, modified by an observer's evaluation of the risk of collision. Field studies were done to assess the validity, reliability, and practicality of traffic conflicts. Experiments were conducted to test the threshold value of time to collision, and to examine a visual perception theory of crash avoidance behaviour. The experiments demonstrate that a time to collision threshold value of 1.5 s is a reasonable time-based index of hazard and that a visual perception model of breaking is a promising concept. The wider potential for traffic conflicts as a measure of driver risk, and as a basis for safety models, is discussed in the paper. The technique has been used for some 45 intersection safety studies. From the application to date it appears that the systematic observation of crash avoidance behaviour of drivers in unsafe conditions provides a useful tool for traffic engineering analysis of intersection traffic control and design problems. Key words: road safety, traffic conflicts, time to collision, driver risk, safety models.

Abstract:
As part of the traffic control plan, road markings form the traffic surface and provide visual guidance for road users. Since their first application to the present day, road markings have become a common element of road infrastructure and one of the basic low-cost safety measures. The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic review of the most significant academic activities to date regarding the influence of longitudinal and transverse road markings as well as road markings for hazard locations (curves, intersections, and rural-urban transitions) on driver’s behaviour and overall road safety. The review includes a total of 71 studies from which are 52 peer-reviewed journal studies, 4 conference proceedings, and 15 professional reports. The studies are, based on their aim, divided into two categories: (1) studies on the impact of road markings on driver behaviour (36 studies) and (2) studies on the impact of road markings on road safety (35 studies).

Abstract:
Abstract. On-road information, including road boundaries, road markings, and road cracks, provides significant guidance or warning to all road users. Recently, the on-road information extraction from LiDAR data have been widely studied. However, for the LiDAR data with lower accuracy and higher noise, some detailed information, such as road boundary, is difficult to be extracted correctly. Furthermore, most of previous studies lack an exploration of efficiently extracting multiple on-road information from a single framework. In this paper, we propose a new framework that can simultaneously extract multiple on-road information from high accuracy LiDAR data and can also more robustly extract detailed road boundaries from low accuracy LiDAR data. First, we propose a Curb-Aware Ground Filter to extract ground points with rich curb structure features. Second, we transform the vertical density, elevation gradient and intensity features of the ground points into multiple feature maps and extract multiple on-road information from the feature maps by employing a semantic segmentation network. Experimental results on three datasets with different data accuracy demonstrate that our method outperforms other recent competitive methods.

Abstract:
The road safety development in East-European countries follows in general the trends of the western countries, even though there is a time lag. The fatality numbers are decreasing, though the improvements for the vulnerable road users are less impressive compared to other road user categories. The traditional road safety analysis based on accident history has many limitations related to accident under-reporting, low and random accident counts at individual sites and lack of details in the police or hospital reports. The surrogate safety methods are based on observation of other- than-accident occurrences that still have a strong relation to safety in traffic. Such methods are often more efficient (and pro-active) for safety assessments. The paper reviews the current status of the surrogate safety analysis methods, the challenges, and opportunities related to modern urban traffic conditions and the emerging technologies for more efficient data collection. The method is put in the context of the East-European countries to see how it contribute to the on-going road safety work and a better understanding of accidents risk factors necessary for producing effective safety counter-measures.

Abstract:
Driving simulators emerged as a promising technology for the analysis of driving conditions and road users' behaviour in an attempt to tackle the problem of road accidents. The work presented herein demonstrates the design and development of a driving simulator that aims to contribute towards evaluating black spots in road networks by promoting rapid design of realistic models and facilitating the specification of test scenarios. A reliable driving simulator should be able to reproduce the driver's behaviour in a realistic way. In this study the authors examine different setups of the simulator to define the one that achieves highest levels of reliability. The chosen setup is then used to evaluate the impact of distractors (e.g. billboards) on driving behaviour of local road users for a chosen black spot in Limassol, Cyprus. Data collected from the experiments are analysed, and the main findings are presented and discussed.

Estonia has improved road safety dramatically since its re-independence in 1991, and among the other reasons, this has happened due to changes in behaviour of road users. Likely, at the same time, there have been annual studies conducted, aimed at measuring specific indicators connected to compliance with road traffic law. As a result, one gets long-term trends in such indicators as compliance with traffic signals, usage of seat belts, yielding to pedestrians at uncontrolled crossings. This paper aims to describe Estonian traffic behaviour studies, analysing their results and pointing out actual problems in traffic behaviour. According to the results of studies, all aspects of traffic behaviour showed positive trends, but these trends are different. Certain indicators such as usage of seat belts have changed dramatically, while others like compliance with traffic signals showed only moderate changes. The foremost problem in traffic behaviour is found out to be ignorance to yield at uncontrolled pedestrian crossings. It is certainly one of the issues to deal with in the context of achieving Estonian strategic goals in road safety.

Abstract:
Need for transport accelerated growth recorded in the past years results in worsening road congestion phenomenon, with negative effects in all domains of life. Thus, some road junctions’ capacity is exceeded during peak hours and traffic lights are not effective any more. In these situations, modifications to infrastructure or/and changes in the local policy plan are required. However, these cannot be performed immediately and remain rather a solution that will operate later. The authors attempt to find out a satisfying semaphoring scheme for these time slices, outlining the effects.
