Robert Pollok’s The Course of Time was one of the best-selling long poems of the nineteenth century, outstripping works by much better known contemporaries such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley. Yet today, Pollok and his poem are almost entirely forgotten by scholars and general readers alike. The purpose of the Boy Scout Movement was to create boys who were honest, obedient to constituted authority and loyal to the King and the British Empire. This thesis examines the influence that Scouting's founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, had on the development of Scouting in Queensland in the period 1907 to 1937, and concludes that that influence was profound. The Cape fur seal Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus colony at the Robberg Peninsula, Plettenberg Bay, on the south-east coast of South Africa, was driven to extirpation by indiscriminate harvesting by the late 1800s and seals only began to recolonise this site in the 1990s. This study describes the recolonisation process from 2000 to 2009, exploring within- and between-year variation in the number of seals using the site. In this thesis I consider how statistical assumptions are driven by the assumptions the researcher makes about the data. I focus specifically on assumptions surrounding data generation, namely: a) the shape of distribution expected, b) the process by which data were obtained, c) the shape of the outcome distribution, and d) inferring information about missing data. Each chapter of this thesis will focus on one of these assumptions using a combination of tools. I use existing methods and propose new models before exploring from a cognitive perspective the types of inference people make.
