Abstract:
In 1314 the English-held castles of Roxburgh, Edinburgh and Stirling were seized and destroyed by Robert Bruce. This was the pinnacle of a policy by which Bruce systematically slighted the castles he seized in Scotland. The reign of Edward II has been seen as a period in which the military value of the castle was in decline and by analysing the role the castle played in the campaigns of Bruce it is possible to assess the importance a successful contemporary commander attached to the castle during this period. Bruce had first-hand experience of the castle at war and knew of its limitations. In

Abstract:
This article challenges two orthodoxies concerning Dunfermline's medieval church and abbey. It argues that David I and Malcolm IV were buried not with Robert Bruce, his queen, and Alexander III, but with Queen Margaret (died 1093), her husband, three of David's brothers, and Alexander III's first wife, as the earliest royal burial cluster. This argument dovetails with a reappraisal of the evolution of the medieval abbey. It is concluded that when dedicated in 1150, David's abbey was largely coextensive with his mother's church, only achieving cruciform status by 1180 and Queen Margaret's first

This article deals with the trials of two evangelical scholars, one from the late nineteenth century, Alexander B. Bruce, and the other from the late twentieth, Robert Gundry. Both faced accusation and judgment from their peers because of their redaction-critical remarks about the synoptic gospels. Bruce was tried by the Free Church of Scotland, while Gundry’s membership in the Evangelical Theological Society was challenged. After considering the cases of both, consideration is given to potential lessons that evangelical scholars who use redactioncritical methods may learn from the experiences
