The core of this paperis a reading of Robert Browning's “Clive” (1880); it attempts to account for the formalist demands of this generically complex and relentlessly ironic poetic text, while at the same time it construes the accomplishment of Browning's poetic language and form as intricate cultural critique. However, in order to better understand Browning's poem an additional discussion of its intertexts is required, the most important being Thomas Babington Macaulay's essay “On Clive” (1840).

Abstract:

This paper is dedicated to the achievements of Robert Engle and Clive Granger which allowed to overcome a serious crisis in macroeconomics and financial market analysis. The main concepts of cointegration theory and different estimation methods of cointegration equations are considered in the first part of the paper. The areas of application of cointegration theory and possible extensions are briefly described as well. The financial time series model with conditional heteroskedastisity is analyzed in the second part of the paper. The main prerequisites of the method suggested by R. Engle are formulated and its extensions and areas of application are defined.

At the Peace of Paris in 1763 Britain reaped the rewards of a successful war overseas. Great gains were made in North America, die West Indies and West Africa. Two years later Robert Clive signed the treaty of Allahabad by which the Mughal emperor transferred the diwani and widi it effective possession of die huge province of Bengal to the East India Company. No one could doubt the scale of what had been acquired in so short a time in terms of land, people or resources. How these vast gains could be turned to account, by whom and with what consequences, aroused eager anticipation, a well as serious misgivings, as die British state and many private individuals tried to exploit the opportunities opened up by British military prowess. In so doing they revealed much about the strengdis and weaknesses of British overseas expansion in the eighteenth century.

ABSTRACTInspired by the debate about the influence feature films exerted over popular political attitudes during the interwar period, this article explores how one of cinema's most popular genres, the historical drama, represented British politics during the 1930s. It concentrates on eight films that depicted leading figures from Britain's modern political past, ranging from Robert Clive and Pitt the elder to Queen Victoria by way of Benjamin Disraeli. The article emphasizes how this historiophoty was shaped by the movies' production context. For they were: created within a transatlantic culture, with a majority produced in Hollywood; depended on how stars associated with the genre, notably George Arliss, embodied their roles; and structured around conventions which privileged popularity over accuracy. Thanks to such influences, these movies articulated a strongly normative view of British democracy, showing how personable, paternalistic, and disinterested leaders had improved the people's welfare and advanced a benevolent empire. This picture of Britain's political past was clearly convenient to Stanley Baldwin's Conservative party. However, it owed its essential character less to the establishment bias of the interwar film industry and more to the irreducibly ‘cinematic’ nature of commercial cinema.

Abstract:

Sometime in the 1760s, a Constantinople-born, French-educated Muslim arrived at the port of Balassor in north-east India. Known variously as Mustapha or Monsieur Raymond, he had, he later wrote, “with a mediocre dictionary and a bad grammar”, and by conversing with the ship's captain en route from Bombay, “learned enough of English . . . as I might delight in Bolingbroke's Philosophical works”. This student of contemporary intellectual history soon put his knowledge to work, securing a position translating for Robert Clive, the conquering hero of the English East India Company's new imperial administration in India. Subsequently falling from favour, Mustapha crossed over to seek employment with the English company's French rivals, earning himself a spell in prison as a spy. He also travelled to Mecca, where he gained the honorific “Haji” but lost his fortune, his cabinet of curiosities and his collection of books and manuscripts. He then became the keeper of a zenana (to the Europeans, a harem or seraglio), and he entered the world of publishing. In 1789, in Calcutta, Mustapha had printed for himself a pamphlet-length diatribe on the iniquitous administration of the law in British Bengal entitled Some Idea of the Civil and Criminal Courts of Justice at Moorshoodabad. In the same year he was also involved, as the pseudonymous editor “Nota Manus”, in the publication of a three-volume English translation of a Persian work of Indian history—Ghulam Hussain Khan Tabatabai's Seir Mutaqherin, or View of Modern Times (written in 1781–2)—which dealt with the British conquest and administration of Bengal, and offered a stern critique of the new rulers who seemed to have “an aversion to the Society of Indians, and a disdain against conversing with them”. Finally, Mustapha (who called himself a “Semi-Englishman” who had the interests of his “adopted countrymen” at heart) claimed to have published in London a work of futurology entitled State of Europe in 1800. In his encounters with Europeans, his travels within and beyond India (although he never made it to England as he had planned), and his involvement in the production of historical and geographical knowledge, Mustapha was deeply interested in that which shaped his own fortunes: the relationships of knowledge and power between Europe and other parts of the world.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Despite the development and validation of multimarker gene panels like OncotypeDx®, Mammaprint® and EndoPredict®, an affordable and globally accessible biomarker approach that can predict increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients diagnosed with ER+LN- breast cancer, as well as the efficacy of adjuvant endocrine + chemotherapy in mitigating such elevated risk, continues to be an unmet medical need. Lack of such a pragmatic solution continues to be the cause of preventable recurrent/metastatic disease in patients diagnosed with ER+LN- breast cancer in resource-challenged settings around the world. We hypothesized that a predictive biomarker strategy that measures expression of the plasticity marker FOXC1, in combination with clinical parameters like tumor size (TS) and tumor grade (TG), may offer equivalent results to that of the above multimarker gene panels at a significantly lower economic cost without compromising accuracy of prediction results. METHODS: Pre-treatment tumor RNA data obtained from a training cohort (compendium of gene expression microarray datasets, n=2857) and a single large validation cohort (SCAN-B Prospective Multicenter Observational Study, n=3520) for patients diagnosed with ER+LN- breast cancer were analyzed for FOXC1 expression, tumor size (TS) and tumor grade (TG) and correlated with Recurrence-Free Survival (RFS) and Overall Survival (OS). Optimized biomarker cutoff values based on model area-under-curve were leave-one-out cross validated and Risk-of-Recurrence (ROR) prediction algorithm derived utilizing the (compendium) training dataset. The unmodified strategy was then validated in the independent (SCAN-B) validation dataset. RESULTS: A predetermined High ROR score calculated using FOXC1 expression, TS and TG (trained using the compendium dataset) predicted efficacy of adjuvant endocrine + chemotherapy over that of adjuvant endocrine therapy alone in ER+LN- patients in terms of statistically significant reduction in all-cause mortality at 8-years post-diagnosis in the SCAN-B validation dataset (4.66% vs 24.06%, n=326, OR=6.48, 95%CI [2.97-14.11], p< 0.0001). OncotypeDx® (5.7% vs 14.4%, n=762, OR=2.79, 95%CI [1.37-5.67], p=0.002), Mammaprint® (5.1% vs 18.4%, n=665, OR= 95%CI [2.04-8.43], p< 0.0001) and Endopredict® (4.8% vs 15.2%, n=923, OR=3.58 95%CI [1.78-7.21], p=0.0002) were also statistically significant predictors of the same. CONCLUSION: Pre-treatment tumor FOXC1 mRNA or protein expression (assessed using qRT-PCR or routine immunohistochemistry (IHC), respectively, when combined with TS and TG presents a unique and economical alternative solution to multimarker gene panel tests like OncotypeDx®, Mammaprint® or Endopredict®, for guiding therapy of patients diagnosed with ER+LN- breast cancer in resource challenged settings. Such an approach to identify elevated risk of recurrence in patients diagnosed with ER+LN- breast cancer and prevent the same by guiding adjuvant endocrine + chemotherapy decisions, could help to extend recurrence-free and overall survival. Such an approach merits testing in real world ER+LN- patient cohorts in resource-challenged settings to help support implementation of this FOXC1-driven predictive biomarker strategy in the clinic. La obra de Robert Musil Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften no sólo se considera una de las cumbres de la novela del siglo XX, sino que constituye también un ensayo de profundo calado teórico político sobre la nación y los nacionalismos en la Europa de entreguerras. La crisis del Imperio austrohúngaro sirve de motivo al autor para desarrollar una crítica profunda de algunos de los fundamentos teóricos fundamentales del pensamiento político moderno. Este artículo muestra cómo la crítica sistemática a la que el nacionalismo esencialista y racista se somete en la obra se basa en una revisión de dos de los presupuestos filosóficos que la hacen posible: la concepción lineal del tiempo y la historia, y la metafísica del sujeto. El análisis explora las profunda relación que existe en la obra entre la identidad individual (el sujeto) y la identidad colectiva (la nación), entre la crisis del sujeto unitario moderno como individuo autónomo y las dificultades de la construcción de un concepto pluralista, democrático e inclusivo de Nación. Es habitual que algunos lectores confundan la postura de Berkeley al creer que niega la existencia del mundo externo y que su filosofía lleva inevitablemente al solipsismo. Este artículo es una breve edición anotada de la obra de JovellanosRudimentos de la gramática inglesa, publicada en 1794 como parte de su Curso de Humanidades Castellanas, y que representa una de las primeras gramáticas inglesas escritas en español. En él se analizan sus características formales más importantes así como la posible influencia que las gramáticas inglesas de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, como la Joseph Priestley (1761), Robert Lowth (1762) o Samuel Johnson (1766), tuvieron en el texto del ilustrado español. Abstract:

Cortés Conde nació en Buenos Aires, el 5 de febrero de 1932. Desde 1955 está casado con Sara Jorge, tiene cuatro hijos y seis nietos. Se recibió de abogado en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) en 1956, realizando estudios de posgrado en sociología, también en la UBA, entre 1960 y 1962. En nuestro país enseñó economía política en la Facultad de Derecho de la UBA, entre 1984 y 1990, e historia económica en la Universidad Nacional del Litoral, entre 1963 y 1966, en la Universidad Católica Argentina, entre 1981 y 1990, y en la Universidad de San Andrés desde 1991 (emérito desde 2002). En el extranjero dictó cursos en las universidades de Chicago, Harvard, Hebrea de Jerusalén, Texas, y Yale. Es académico de número de la Academia Nacional de la Historia y de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias Económicas, y entre 1998 y 2002 presidió la Asociación Internacional de Historia Económica. En el marco del Proyecto Prometeo, la Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) inicia la implementación del Balanced Scorecard (BSC) o Cuadro de Mando Integral, como modelo de Gestión Universitaria. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es implementar en la ESPOCH, el BSC como Modelo de Gestión y establecer Cuadros de Mando para sus Subsistemas y Facultades. Para el desarrollo del trabajo se tuvo en cuenta las teorías de Robert Kaplan y David Norton respecto al BSC, la utilización del Cuadro de Mando ODUN, además, de utilizar métodos comparativos y de análisis con otras experiencias en la gestión universitaria. Finalmente se implementó el BSC que facilitó el Control de Gestión en la ESPOCH.Palabras Clave: Balanced Scorecard, Sistema de Gestión de la Calidad, Cuadro de Mando. Within the Prometeo Project, the Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) started implementing the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as a model of University Management. The objectives of this project are to implement BSC in the ESPOCH, in its five subsystems and seven faculties. In order to develop of the research, we considered the theories of Robert Kaplan and David Norton and the use of the dashboard ODUN. A comparative analysis with other university management methods was carried out. Finally, the BSC was implemented; this benefitted the operational management of ESPOCH.

Extracto del ensayo: "Buenas noches a todos y a todas. Quiero iniciar mi discurso con dos presentaciones. La primera es la de Heleny Guariba. Heleny y yo estudiamos juntas, precisamente fue ella quien me presentó a mi novio, con quien me casé un tiempo después. Estuve con Heleny la víspera del día de su arresto; charlamos durante varias horas en mi casa e hicimos algunos planes para el día siguiente, pero nunca más la volví a ver. La segunda presentación es la de otro colega, Luiz Roberto Salinas. Luiz Roberto no murió en la prisión, pero sin duda murió por las secuelas de su encarcelamiento. A Luiz Roberto lo encarcelaron y lo torturaron, si bien en aquella época, a finales de los años 70, ya no militaba en ningún movimiento o grupo. Había militado mucho antes, a la altura de 1964. La esposa de Luiz Roberto era periodista y por esos días había publicado un reportaje. Como los policías, los militares, no entendieron algunas de las palabras del reportaje, lo interpretaron como un código cifrado. Allanaron el apartamento de Luiz Roberto, pero como su esposa no se en- contraba en ese momento, lo apresaron y lo torturaron en el “Pau de arara”1 días sin fin para que confesara cuál era la clave. No había código alguno, no había nada que descifrar, nada, pero lo despedazaron, lo devastaron física y psíquicamente. Transcurrieron muchos años para que pudiera recuperarse, aunque nunca lo consiguió realmente. Sufrió una trombosis en sus dos piernas y tuvieron que amputarle los dedos de los pies. Murió con un síncope. Es claro que la tortura lo privó de la vida. Luiz Roberto era un gran amigo, un amigo del corazón. Entramos juntos al Departamento de Filosofía y juntos nos titulamos como profesores de la USP".

Abstract: Robert L. Norton encountered a Red-billed Tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus) approximately 60 km NNW of Aruba, providing Aruba’s first record of this species. Given the pelagic distribution of this species during the non-breeding season, and nine antecedent records from Bonaire and Curaçao, additional records seem likely for Aruba, especially given an increase in reports of seabirds from cruise ships off Aruba. Norton encontró un individuo de Phaethon aethereus aproximadamente a 60 km NNO de Aruba, lo que constituye el primer registro de esta especie para la isla. Dada la distribución pelágica de esta especie durante la época no reproductiva y los nueve registros anteriores en Bonaire y Curazao, es probable que Aruba tenga registros adicionales, especialmente dado el aumento de avistamientos de aves marinas desde cruceros en la isla. <div id="cke_pastebin">La reflexión ética sobre los actos humanos está muy interesada en la responsabilidad que el ser humano tiene sobre los mismos y se cuestiona continuamente hasta qué grado está involucrado en ellos. El tema de la responsabilidad moral es recurrente, tanto en la ética filosófica como en la teología moral y, en no pocos casos, crea un gran interés en ambientes políticos y profesionales. En la primera parte de este artículo se ofrece una inicial descripción del problema de la responsabilidad mediante algunos factores que se observan en la sociedad, para pasar luego a la definición del concepto de responsabilidad. En la segunda parte se ha buscado encuadrar la reflexión de este tema partiendo de la controversia iniciada por Max Weber, el cual distingue en sus escritos una ética de la convicción y una ética de la responsabilidad. Dicho autor posee una noción propia de responsabilidad en clave utilitarista. Será precisamente a la luz de las reflexiones del Profesor Robert Spaemann que iré delimitando la ética de la responsabilidad de Weber y ofreceré su punto de vista sobre la misma.</div><div id="cke_pastebin">A lo largo de todo el trabajo se irán entrecruzando los diversos conceptos que a los términos "ética de la responsabilidad" y "ética del deber" van dando tanto Max Weber como Robert Spaemann, pero será a la luz de este último, como extraeré una noción enriquecedora</div>
