Stories are perceived as central to modern life. Not only in narrative entertainment media, such as television, cinema, theater, but also in social media. Telling/having "a story" is widely deemed essential, in business as well as in social life. Does this mark an intensification of what has always been part of human cultures; or has the realm of "story" expanded to dominate twenty-first century discourse? Addressing stories is an obvious priority for the Key Debates series, and Volume 7, edited by Ian Christie and Annie van den Oever, identifies new phenomena in this field — complex narration, puzzle films, transmedia storytelling — as well as new approaches to understanding these, within narratology and bio-cultural studies. Literatur machen. Fallstudien zur Zusammenarbeit von Autor und Lektor im 20. Jahrhundert. Robert Walser / Christian Morgenstern Rainer Maria Rilke / Fritz Hünich Peter Handke / Elisabeth Borchers Marcel Beyer / Christian Döring Schreiben braucht den Rückzug – so ein Topos, der das Schreiben zum Ort der Abgeschiedenheit macht. Doch werden Texte und Bücher nicht von Autoren allein gemacht, sondern im Wechselspiel verschiedener Akteure. Mit dem Aufkommen des Lektorats um 1900 wurde die Funktion des mitschreibenden Anderen institutionalisiert. Seitdem avancierte das Lektorat zu jener Vermittlungsinstanz, die nicht nur auswählt, welche Texte zu Büchern werden, sondern qua Mitarbeit am Text vielfach formt, was wir lesen. Welches Wissen wird zwischen Autor und Lektor ausgehandelt, hergestellt und angewendet? Lässt sich ein Text so ›verbessern‹, dass er seinen eigenen Maßgaben gerecht bleibt (oder vielleicht erst wird) und zugleich den Voraussetzungen seiner künftigen Öffentlichkeit entspricht? Die Verschiebung der Aufmerksamkeit vom singulären Autor auf den »unsichtbaren Zweiten« rückt die betrieblichen Bedingungen moderner Autorschaft in den Fokus. Literarisches Schreiben wird als eine relationale, kollaborative Praxis greifbar. Zugleich eröffnet der Blick auf das Lektorieren neue Perspektiven auf literarische Werke sowie auf die zugehörigen Schreibszenen und Autorenbilder. Das Buch versammelt vier Fallstudien, die auf größtenteils erstmals rekonstruiertem Quellenmaterial beruhen. Untersucht wird die Zusammenarbeit von Robert Walser und Christian Morgenstern, von Rainer Maria Rilke und Fritz Hünich, von Peter Handke und Elisabeth Borchers sowie von Marcel Beyer und Christian Döring.

Das klassische, aus dem 19. Jahrhundert tradierte und oft – nicht zuletzt von der Kirche – idealisierte Bild der Familie ist in der Moderne zunehmend fragwürdig geworden. Väter haben ihre Bedeutung als Alleinernährer verloren, Frauen sehen ihre Erfüllung nicht mehr allein in der Sorge für Ehemann und Kinder, die Ehe als einziges Modell gelebter Zweisamkeit hat Konkurrenz durch alternative Familienkonstellationen bekommen. Es gibt nicht mehr «die Familie», sondern zahlreiche Familienbilder und eine Vielfalt an Modellen des Zusammenlebens. Die aktuelle, von der Pluralisierung der Lebensformen gekennzeichnete Situation und die Unübersichtlichkeit der Lage ist auch eine Anfrage an die Familienpastoral. Wie und ob die Kirche neue Antworten vor diesem Hintergrund findet, war zuletzt auch Gegenstand zweier von Papst Franziskus einberufenen Bischofssynoden, die in dem päpstlichen Lehrschreiben Amoris Laetitia ihren Niederschlag fanden. Der vorliegende Band nähert sich dem Wandel der Familien im Spiegel von aktuellen Film- und Fernsehproduktionen. Zum einen geht es darum, wie Filme von «realistischen» Familien erzählen – im Alltag, aber auch in Extremsituationen, Krisen und Konflikten, zum anderen werden in den Figuren auch Idealvorstellungen von Familie und Lebensglück artikuliert. Im ersten Teil werden allgemeine Überlegungen zu Entwicklungsprozessen und Konflikten in der Familie aus psychologischer Sicht und zum spezifischen Wandel der Familienwerte entfaltet. Der Hauptteil konzentriert sich auf die Analyse einzelner Filme: HÖHERE GEWALT von Ruben Östlund, ELTERN von Robert Thalheim, DIE FRAU DES POLIZISTEN von Philip Gröning oder SCHWESTERN von Anne Wild, wobei zu den beiden letzten Filmen ausführliche Interviews mit dem Regisseur bzw. der Regisseurin geboten werden. In populären TV-Serien wird das Familienthema in Bezug auf die Gegenwart in der TV-Soap GUTE ZEITEN, SCHLECHTE ZEITEN und in historischer Perspektive in der populären britischen Serie DOWNTON ABBEY untersucht. Ein spezieller Blick wird auf Familien in Kurzfilmen geworfen. Überlegungen zur Bedeutung des Films für die pastorale Arbeit der Kirche runden das Themenspektrum ab. The German idea of the Rechtsstaat has revolutionary origins. Robert von Mohl crafted it under the influence of the Enlightenment. This chapter tells a brief history of the idea of the Rechtsstaat in Germany. It traces the evolution of the term from its emergence in the late eighteenth century until 1933. Its intellectual trajectory raises questions about the long-run consequences of legal development in modern Germany. It sets the stage for the analysis in the next chapter of the term’s manipulation by legal theorists in Nazi Germany.

The handbook contains forty essays by over thirty contributors from various universities on the antecedents, the content, and the reception of the Dionysian corpus, a body of writings falsely ascribed to Dionysius the Areopagite, a convert of St Paul, but actually written about ad 500. The first section contains discussions of the genesis of the corpus, its Christian antecedents, and its Neoplatonic influences. In the second section, studies on the Syriac reception, the relation of the Syriac to the original Greek, and the editing of the Greek by John of Scythopolis are followed by contributions on the use of the corpus in such Byzantine authors as Maximus the Confessor, John of Damascus, Theodore the Studite, Nicholas Stethatos, Gregory Palamas, and Gemistus Pletho. In the third section, attention turns to the Western tradition, represented first by the translators John Scotus Eriugena, John Sarracenus, and Robert Grosseteste and then by such readers as the Victorines, the early Franciscans, Albert the Great, Aquinas, Bonaventure, Dante, the English mystics, Nicholas of Cusa, and Marsilio Ficino The contributors to the final section survey the effect on Western readers of Lorenzo Valla’s proof of the inauthenticity of the corpus and the subsequent exposure of its dependence on Proclus by Koch and Stiglmayr. Recent scholarship on the complex relationship between Katherine Mansfield and her best-selling author cousin, Elizabeth von Arnim, has done much to shed light on the familial, personal and literary connections between these unlikely friends. Although their lives appeared to be very different (Mansfield’s largely one of penurious poor health, von Arnim’s chiefly one of robust privilege), we know that each of these women experienced the other as an influential presence. Moreover, Mansfield’s narrator in her early collection of short stories, In a German Pension (1911), bears marked resemblances with the protagonist of Elizabeth and her German Garden (1898), and von Arnim’s most radical novel, Vera (1921), was written at the height of her friendship with Mansfield. The final letter Mansfield ever wrote was to von Arnim and, following Mansfield's death in 1923, John Middleton Murry dedicated his posthumous collection of Mansfield’s poems as follows: ‘To Elizabeth of the German Garden who loved certain of these poems and their author’. This volume brings together contributions from leading scholars including Bonnie Kime Scott, Angela Smith and Andrew Thacker, including the prize-winning essay by Juliane Römhild and creative contributions from New Zealand writers Sarah Laing and Nina Powles.
