Abstract:
Colon and rectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States. Screening effectively decreases colorectal cancer mortality. This study aims to evaluate the impact of colorectal cancer screening within a Veterans Affairs Medical Center and treatment outcomes. Institutional Review Board approval was obtained for a retrospective analysis of all colorectal cancer cases that were identified through the Tumor Registry of the Robley Rex VA Medical Center from 2000 to 2009. Data collected included age at diagnosis, race, risk factors, diagnosis by screening versus symptomatic evaluation, screening test, tumor location and stage, operation performed, operative mortality, and survival. A value of P < 0.05 on Fisher's exact, χ2, analysis of variance, or Cox regression analyses was considered significant. Three hundred fifty-four patients with colorectal cancer (255 colon, 99 rectal) were identified. One hundred twenty-one patients (34%) were diagnosed by screening. In comparison with those diagnosed by symptom evaluation (n = 233), these patients had earlier stage cancers, were more likely to have a curative intent procedure, and had improved 5-year survival rates. Older patients (older than 75 years old) were more likely to present with symptoms. High-risk patients were more likely to have colonoscopic screening than fecal occult blood testing. More blacks had Stage IV disease than nonblacks. Curative intent 30-day operative mortality was 2.1 per cent for colectomy and 0 per cent for rectal resection. Screening for colorectal cancer in the veteran population allows for better survival, detection at an earlier stage, and higher likelihood of resection.

Abstract:
This article presents a typology of armed robbers in Montreal, the result of a study of 39 authors of armed robbery. After a brief outline of the theoretical and methodological model used in this study, each type of armed robber is presented as follows : 1) the multireci-divist who is characterized by a large number of armed robberies, 2) the professional whose criminal activity is planned and organized, 3) the intensive robber who commits armed robberies for a very short period of time and 4) the occasional robber who commits very few armed robberies but many other crimes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Armed robbery seems to be on the decline in Montreal. But there, as everywhere, prevention is «in». Are there effective ways to prevent armed robbery? To answer this question, the study compared the various means used by a sample of 271 Montreal shop owners : 184 of them had been victims of robbery during the last two years and 87 had as yet never been robbed. There are no easy solutions apart from selling the business. It was found that almost all retailers were prevention conscious. Non-expensive equipment is used in most stores by victims as well as non-victims. Costly means, such as alarms or cameras, are not very common but their preventive effect, if any, could not be other than indirect. Cautious behavior, available to all, seems more effective. Non-victims had adopted slightly more preventive habits than former victims, such as frequent and irregular bank deposits, and/or enhancing the shop's visibility, etc. But so many more factors contribute to crime, several of which are beyond the control of the victim. Prevention also has negative side-effects. Is it worth it?

Abstract:
Armed robbery has long been regarded as a crime against property. But from the victim's point of view, it is a violent crime which endangers their lives and constitutes a traumatic experience. Nine years of research are briefly summarized with special attention to a recent survey of victims of commercial robbery in Montreal in which 440 persons were interviewed. It is difficult to describe a victim unless researchers agree on some basic definition of who should be defined as a victim. This is the first subject of discussion. After a short description of the way victimizations occur, the consequences of the robbery are discussed, and the responses of the mental health and justice systems are presented. Most victims do not resist and those who do so seem to be reacting to past victimizations or to an excess of violence on the part of the robber. Nearly 90 % of victims suffer some kind of emotional trauma and far from being helped in this regard, this trauma is often aggravated by the criminal justice system's response. It seems to affect the victim much more than the financial, physical and social consequences of the crime, which had little effect on their attitudes and needs. The main problem with armed robbery is that it creates and perpetuates a climate of suspicion, fear and anger very damaging to social relationships. These negative effects can be reduced, however, and the study points out some of the means by which this can be accomplished.

Abstract:
This article examines the consequences of encounters between strangers that might have resulted in robbery or rape and explores how the eventual outcomes of those incidents were related to the resistance offered by their potential victims. It is based on data from the National Crime Survey. Although the conclusions necessarily are tentative, it appears that forceful resistance was related to less frequent success by robbers, but robbery victims resisting forcefully had a greater risk of being physically attacked. Forceful resistance in potential rape incidents was related to higher risk of attack and bodily injury with no apparent reduction in risk of rape. On the other hand, victims who were able to offer nonforceful resistance reported a reduced risk of being robbed and suffered less frequent attack and injury. In rape incidents, nonforceful resistance was linked to lower risk of actual rape but was unrelated to risk of attack or other forms of injury.

Abstract:
AbstractIncreasing female involvement in violent crime is a concern in Nigeria; still, it is unclear what informs this sudden surge in a society that supposedly socializes feminine gender to be soft, caring, and compassionate. This article explores the sociological profiles of women involved in armed robbery, drawing case examples from 32 convicts in a Nigerian female penitentiary. It was found that women were made susceptible to deviance by some social factors such as familial variables, neighborhood characteristics, gender discrimination, neglect, and violence. Both primary and secondary social groups were found to be major facilitators in the initiation into crime, development of criminal career, entry into armed robbery, and maintenance of life as a robber. This article concludes that gender-based inequality in all social facets and the unfavorable socio-economic conditions in Nigeria increase the vulnerability of women to be recruited into criminality. A revival of the family institution, gender-neutral parenting, government’s intervention for improvement of socio-economic wellbeing, and gender education are suggested.

The Germanic word for ‘seal’ *selxazThe Germanic term *selxaz m. ‘seal’, especially ‘harbor seal, Phoca vitulina L.’, has not been explained so far from the etymological and morphological point of view. It is suggested in this paper that there was an Indo-European word *tsel-ə2k-s m. ‘small crawling animal, snail, tortoise’, derived from the verbal root *tsel- ‘to crawl’ by means of the diminutive suffix *-ə2k-. The Proto-Germans in Northern Europe met seals, i.e. big marine mammals, which move on the earth with difficulty. They called this animal *sel-ə2k-o-s m. ‘big crawling animal’ > ‘seal’, hence Gm. *selxaz m. ‘Phoca’.

Abstract:
In July of 2013 a group of undergraduate students from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, published a collaborative web map called “Where I Was Robbed”. Their initial efforts in publicizing their web map were restricted to announce it at a local radio as a tool of social interest. In two months the map had almost 10.000 reports, 155 reports per day and people from more the 350 cities had already reported a crime. The present study consists in an investigation about this collaborative web map spatial correlation to official robbery data registered at the Secretary of Public Safety database, for the city of Salvador, Bahia. Kernel density estimator combined with map algebra was used to the investigation. Spatial correlations with official robbery data for the city of Salvador were not found initially, but after standardizing collaborative data and mining official registers, both data pointed at very similar areas as the main hot spots for pedestrian robbery. Both areas are located at two of the most economical active areas of the city, although web map crimes reports were more concentrated in an area with higher income population. This results and discussions indicates that this collaborative application is been used mainly by mid class and upper class parcel of the city population, but can still provide significant information on public safety priority areas. Therefore, extended divulgation, on local papers, radio and TV, of the collaborative crime map application and partnership with official agencies are strongly recommended.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To verify how conduct disorder and conduct problems are associated with gender, age at onset of drug use and categories of drugs used. METHOD: A test of association was conducted between the presence of comorbidity and gender. Mean age of first use of each drug was compared to mean age of first arrest, of first robbery/theft, and of first drug dealing. RESULTS: In this sample, approximately 59% of adolescents had already robbed and/or stolen, 38.6% had already been arrested, 32.3% had prior history of drug dealing, 24.1% had depression, and 9.6% had conduct disorder. Prevalence of conduct problems was 65.2%. Tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and cocaine were used before the first robbery and/or theft, first drug dealing, and first arrest. DISCUSSION: The fact that drug use onset preceded illegal acts suggests that the latter are the consequence of the consumption of the former, or perhaps, the consequence of "social invisibility" (feeling of not belonging to anything or to anybody) by which these youths undergo. CONCLUSIONS: Labeling these youths as conduct-disordered adolescents may cloud a rather different reality, and it may submit them to more social isolation and stigmatization as well.

Abstract:
Now a day’s ATMs are equipped with money there is possibility of robberies. This paper proposes a framework which will provide high security in ATMs. The Prototype includes ARM controller, Vibration Sensor, GSM and GPS Technique, DC Motor, Stepper motor, Buzz-er, LCD Display, and Keil Tool. Whenever robbery occurs, Vibration sensor is used here which senses vibration produced from ATM machine. This system uses ARM controller based embedded system to process real time data collected using the vibration sensor. Once the vibration is sensed the beep sound will occur from the buzzer. DC Motor is used for closing the door of ATM.Stepper motor is used to leak the gas inside the ATM to bring the thief into unconscious stage. Camera is always in processing and sending video continuous to the PC and it will be saved in computer. RTC used to capture the robber occur time and sends the SMS and MMS to the nearby police station and corresponding bank through the GSM and GPS. Here LCD displays board using showing the output of the message continuously. This will prevent the robbery and the person involving in robbery can be easily caught. Abstract:
In 2017, appears the book of fantastic stories Réquiem por Tijuana, by Mexican Néstor Robles. We propose that in Robles’ fantastic plots, set in Tijuana, the idea of community is criticized and, on the contrary, the fragility of human bonds is demonstrated versus the unusual. To reach this conclusion, we place Robles first at the intersection of northern literature and fantastic literature. Second, we examine six stories where the weakness of the community isdemonstrated through fantastic facts. Finally, we link Robles’ idea of community with that of the philosophers Pelbart and Esposito, summarizing the failure of what should be an heterogeneous community as an alliance, given the finite nature of the human being.

Abstract:
The authors analyzed available statistics on robbery and its legal definition in Serbian Criminal Law as well as in some foreign criminal codes. The focus is on serious/qualified cases of this crime known in comparative law and the absence of "armed robbery" in our Criminal Law. Regarding increase and dangerousness of this sort of crime (with use of weapon) modification of existing legal definition (by introducing armed robbery) is considered and recommended.

Votruba, Martin. "Hang Him High: The Elevation of Jánošík to an Ethnic Icon." Slavic Review 65, no. 1 (2006): 24–44. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/4148521.

Abstract:
In this paper, Martin Votruba traces the evolution of the Jánošík myth. The highwayman Jánošík is a living legend in Czech, Polish, and Slovak cultures. Contrary to common claims, the modern celebratory myth of the brigand hanged in the eighteenth century is at odds with the traditional images of brigandage in the western Carpathians. Folk songs and The Hungarian Simplicissimus of the seventeenth century often anathematize highway robbery. High literature of the mostly Slovak counties of the Kingdom of Hungary in the Habsburg empire similarly cast Jánošík as a criminal. Yet some intellectuals, such as Pavol Jozef Šafárik, inspired by the robber in German literature, singled out Jánošík from among other brigands and reduced that folklore-based opprobrium. Others, such as Ján Kollár, resisted Jánošík's rehabilitation. Subsequent Central European national revivals and ethnic activism prompted the Slovak romantic poets to reinvent Jánošík as a folk rebel against social and ethnic oppression.
