Full text
Abstract:
Anorexia-cachexia is a heterogeneous and multifactorial syndrome most likely driven by systemic inflammation and neuroendocrine activation. Key diagnostic features include reduced appetite, weight loss, and muscle wasting. Key clinical problems include management of anorexia without resort to artificial nutritional support, and muscle wasting that cannot be completely arrested/reversed even with such intervention. Assessment should cover domains such as body stores of energy and protein, food intake, performance status, and factors resulting in excess catabolism. Intervention should be early rather than late, informed by the assessment process and focused on a multimodal approach (nutrition, exercise, and pharmacological agents). This chapter aims to discuss these issues and provide (a) the reader with some background principles to classification, (b) a simple approach to patient assessment and a robust algorithm for basic multimodal treatment, and (c) an overview of the evidence base for different pharmacological interventions.

Carl-Friedrich, Stuckenberg. Part IV The ICC and its Applicable Law, 33 Cumulative Charges and Cumulative Convictions. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198705161.003.0033.

Full text
Abstract:
In ICCs and tribunals, defendants are typically accused or convicted of the commission of multiple crimes based on the same conduct. Fifteen years after the first decisions of the ad hoc Tribunals on the admissibility of cumulative charges and cumulative convictions, a robust, albeit primitive, set of judge-made rules has emerged, but many questions remain open. This becomes apparent upon closer analysis, which allows the classification of all conceivable situations of concursus delictorum according to a simple theoretical matrix. This chapter argues that there are more issues in this area of the law to be addressed beyond ‘speciality’ to which the firmly established Čelebići test solely refers. Legal principles should be carefully revised and developed by the ICC.

Abstract:
Abstract This book presents a Report on every armed conflict which took place during 2014. It is the first in a series of annual reports on armed conflicts across the globe, offering an unprecedented overview of the nature, range, and impact of these conflicts and the legal issues they create. Part I describes its criteria for the identification and classification of armed conflicts under international law, and the legal consequences that flow from this classification. It sets out a list of armed conflicts in 2014, categorising each as international, non-international, or a military occupation, with estimates of civilian and military casualties. In Part II, each of these conflicts are examined in more detail, with an overview of the belligerents, means and methods of warfare, the applicable treaties and rules, and any prosecutions for, investigations into, or robust allegations of war crimes. Part III provides detailed thematic analysis of key legal developments which arose in the context of these conflicts, allowing for a more in-depth reflection on cross-cutting questions and controversies.

Giacovazzo, Carmelo. Phasing in Crystallography. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199686995.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Modern crystallographic methods originate from the synergy of two main research streams, the small-molecule and the macro-molecular streams. The first stream was able to definitively solve the phase problem for molecules up to 200 atoms in the asymmetric unit. The achievements obtained by the macromolecular stream are also impressive. A huge number of protein structures have been deposited in the Protein Data Bank. The solution of them is no longer reserved to an elite group of scientists, but may be attained in a large number of laboratories around the world, even by young scientists. New probabilistic approaches have been tailored to deal with larger structures, errors in the experimental data, and modest data resolution. Traditional phasing techniques like ab initio, molecular replacement, isomorphous replacement, and anomalous dispersion techniques have been revisited. The new approaches have been implemented in robust phasing programs, which have been organized in automatic pipelines usable even by non-experts. Protein structures, which 50 years ago could take months or even years to solve, can now be solved in a matter of hours, partly also due to technological advances in computer science. This book describes all modern crystallographic phasing methods, and introduces a new rational classification of them. A didactic approach is used, with the techniques described simply and logically in the main text, and further mathematical details confined to the Appendices for motivated readers. Numerous figures and applicative details illustrate the text.

Searle, Robert D. Early discussions on a mechanistic approach to pain. Edited by Paul Farquhar-Smith, Pierre Beaulieu, and Sian Jagger. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198834359.003.0042.

Full text
Abstract:
The landmark paper discussed in this chapter is ‘Towards a mechanism-based classification of pain?’, published by Woolf et al. in 1998. One of the great challenges of managing patients with pain problems has been the idiosyncratic response of patients to therapies designed to improve their symptoms. In part, this has been the consequence of imperfect methods of classifying pain. If it is not possible to robustly categorize patients into common pain groups, how can it be hoped that successful treatments that translate well from the research setting into clinical practice will be developed? In this landmark editorial, Clifford Woolf and his co-authors attempted to address imperfections in historical pain classification systems with a novel approach based on pain mechanisms.

Ellison, Aaron M., and Lubomír Adamec. The future of research with carnivorous plants. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779841.003.0029.

Full text
Abstract:
The material presented in the chapters of Carnivorous Plants: Physiology, Ecology, and Evolution together provide a suite of common themes that could provide a framework for increasing progress in understanding carnivorous plants. All speciose genera would benefit from more robust, intra-generic classifications in a phylogenetic framework that uses a unified species concept. As more genomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic data accrue, new insights will emerge regarding trap biochemistry and regulation; interactions with commensals; and the importance of intraspecific variability on which natural selection works. Continued elaboration of field experiments will provide new insights into basic physiology; population biology; plant-animal and plant-microbe relationships; and evolutionary dynamics, all of which will aid conservation efforts and contribute to discussions of assisted migration as the climate continues to change.

Calabretta-Sajder, Ryan, and Alan J. Gravano. Italian Americans on Screen. Lexington Books, 2021. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666995954.

Full text
Abstract:
Italian Americans on Screen: Challenging the Past, Re-Theorizing the Future reconsiders Robert Casillo’s definition of Italian-American cinema as “appl[ying] to works by Italian-American directors who treat Italian-American subjects” to expand this classification. Contributors situate Italian-American cinema and media within the contemporary and intersectional debates about ethnic identity, including race, class, gender, and sexuality studies. This book links past scholarship to theoretical underpinnings with new hermeneutical approaches in television and film to establish new interpretations concerning Italian Americans on screen. Scholars of film studies, media studies, cultural studies, and sociology will find this book particularly useful.

Berrios, German E., and Ivana S. Marková. The Cultural History of Depression. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198801900.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the cultural history of depression, treating the term ‘depression’ as a ‘cultural construct’ within the confines of Western psychopathology. It begins with a historiographical overview of the cultural history of depression and what the term ‘depression’ means. It then considers the emergence of the term ‘depression’ to replace ‘melancholia’, along with the convergences of ‘melancholia’. It also examines the classification of depression, with particular emphasis on various assumptions that accumulated with regard to the nature of this group of disorders. The different varieties of depression and the minor depressions are described as well as the studies carried out by Robert Dick Gillespie and E Farquhar Buzzard. Finally, the chapter assesses the relationship between depression, the affective disorders, and issues concerning mental capacity and legal and ethical responsibility.

Herreros, Ivan. Learning and control. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199674923.003.0026.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses basic concepts from control theory and machine learning to facilitate a formal understanding of animal learning and motor control. It first distinguishes between feedback and feed-forward control strategies, and later introduces the classification of machine learning applications into supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning problems. Next, it links these concepts with their counterparts in the domain of the psychology of animal learning, highlighting the analogies between supervised learning and classical conditioning, reinforcement learning and operant conditioning, and between unsupervised and perceptual learning. Additionally, it interprets innate and acquired actions from the standpoint of feedback vs anticipatory and adaptive control. Finally, it argues how this framework of translating knowledge between formal and biological disciplines can serve us to not only structure and advance our understanding of brain function but also enrich engineering solutions at the level of robot learning and control with insights coming from biology.
