Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of rock avalanches in tectonically active terrains including the effects of the deposits on glacier behaviour and their contribution to moraine formation. The chronologies of mountain glacier fluctuations, based on moraine ages, are widely used to infer regional climate change and are often correlated globally. In actively uplifting mountain ranges rock avalanches that travel onto the ablation zone of a glacier can reduce ice-surface melting by insulating the ice. This can cause buried ice to thicken due to slower ablation and can significantly alter the overall gl

In recent years, the study of rock glaciers has increased remarkably. Substantive progress has been made, particularly in understanding the formation of rock glaciers that have developed adjacent to existing or former valley or cirque glaciers, However, our understanding of valley-wall rock glaciers that are located at the base of talus slopes remains scant. Published work exhibits little consensus on the formation of valley-wall rock glaciers and several hypotheses remain under vigorous debate. Rock glaciers are tongue-shaped or lobate masses of rock debris which occur below cliffs and talus in many alpine regions. They are best developed in continental alpine climates where it is cold enough to preserve a core or matrix of ice within the rock mass but insufficiently snowy to produce true glaciers. Previous reports have identified and briefly described several rock glaciers in the Olympic Mountains, Washington {Long 1975a, pp. 39-41; Nebert 1984), but no detailed integrative study has been made regarding the geomorphic character, age,and distribution of these features.

Since 1901, glacier area decreased from 2.03 ± 0.16 km2 to 1.64 ± 0.05 km2 by 2004, a loss of 19%, and the terminus retreated about 600 m. Mount Hood's glaciers as a whole have lost 34% of their area. During the first part of the 20th century the glacier thinned and retreated, then thickened and advanced between the 1940s and 1960s because of cooler temperatures and increased winter precipitation and has since accelerated its retreat, averaging about 1.0 m a-1 thinning and a 20 m a-1 retreat rate by 2004

Abstract:
Snow and glaciers are considered the most important sources of the estimated 32-60% of global water resources which are provided by mountains. Consequently, snow and glaciers have regularly been the focus of climate change studies in mountain regions. Rock glaciers are a type of ice-debris landform characterized by creeping ice-rich permafrost. Recognition of the hydrological significance of rock glaciers is increasing and is of particular relevance to the Arid Andes, where rock glaciers cover greater area than glaciers by an order of magnitude. Little research exists on the hydrological signi

Abstract:
Rock glaciers are dynamic landforms and, as such, exhibit interesting and welldeveloped structural features, which translate to surface morphology in the form of ridges and furrows. These distinguishing features have led researchers to study the physics behind the movement and internal deformation of rock glaciers. For years researchers had no access to the internal makeup of rock glaciers. Thus, proposed models and discussion have been based on theoretical concepts of electromagnetic (EM) wave propogation. With the application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) to provide a view of the interio

Charbonneau, Ansley Adeline. "Rock glacier activity and distribution in the southeastern British Columbia Coast Mountains." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/6040.

Abstract:
Rock glaciers are common features in high alpine settings of the southeastern British Columbia Coast Mountains. The spatial distribution and characteristics of these periglacial features have not previously been documented. The goal of this research was to determine the distribution and activity of these rock glaciers in order to characterize their periglacial response to climatic variability. A high-resolution aerial inventory documented the presence of 187 rock glaciers between Lat. 50° 10’ - 52° 08’ N. These rock glaciers occur at sites located between 1900 m and 2400 m above sea level,

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies<br>Rock glaciers play a large ecological role and are heavily relied upon by local communities for water, power, and revenue. With climate change, the rate at which they are deforming has increased over the years and is making it more important to gain a better understanding of these geomorphological movements for improved predictions, correlations, and decision making. It is becoming increasingly more practical to examine a rock glacier with 3D visualization to have

"The response of Rae Glacier to climate variations, Canadian Rocky Mountains." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/etd-05242012-115013.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to document the response of a cirque glacier to historical climatic fluctuations. It focuses on the climatic sensitivity of Rae Glacier, a small cirque glacier located in the front ranges of the southern Canadian Rocky Mountains. Results from field work completed in the summers of 1990 and 1991 are used to describe the physical characteristics and glaciological nature of the glacier. Aerial photographs and field observations are used to develop a retreat chronology and to provide information on historical volumetric ice losses and changes in the areal extent of
