I examined the relations between habitat structure, population variability and patterns of microhabitat use by demographic classes (sex, age, residency) in the rock mouse in southern Durango, Mexico. I also examined individual and population responses to experimental changes in food abundance, and the consequences for the prevalence of botfly parasitism. I used a gradient of habitats in manzanita-oak shrubland to analyze demographic variability and microhabitat use patterns. Micro-organisms are the most abundant and diverse form of life on Earth. Their ability to tolerate stress has enabled them to colonise many inhospitable environments. Microbial processes alter the chemistry of the environment which has left a lasting mark on the geological record. On the other hand, microbial life is heavily influenced by environmental conditions. Indeed, the history of the Earth is shaped by the co-evolution of microbial and geological processes. This thesis explores how micro-organisms are influenced by their environment, with particular reference to microbial rock habitats.

Abstract:
A single-beam acoustic seabed classification system was used to map coral reef environments in the upper Florida Keys, USA, and the Bahamas. The system consisted of two components, both produced by the Quester Tangent Corporation. A QTCView Series V, operating with a 50 kHz sounder, was used for data acquisition, and IMPACT software was used for data processing and classification. First, methodological aspects of system performance were evaluated. Second, the system was applied to the assessment of grouper and snapper habitat. Two methodological properties were explored: transferability (i.e.
