Abstract:
D. H. Lawrence is seeking for the consciousness of life throughout his lifelong creation; he resorts to animals that bear closer connections with nature mainly in the 1920s. Based on three short stories which mention ‘horse’ in the title, “The Horse-dealer’s daughter” (1922), “The Woman Who Rode Away” (1925) and “The Rocking-horse Winner” (1926), this essay illustrates how horses function as Lawrence’s pastoral ideal, pursuit for the primitive and shape of humanity. To investigate the effect of increasing velocity within one gait on horse and rider movement and to describe the resulting changes in saddle forces, seven ridden dressage horses were examined on an instrumented treadmill. The speed ranged between 1.3-1.8 m/s at walk and 2.6-3.6 m/s at trot. Kinematics of the horse and rider, vertical ground reaction forces and saddle forces were measured simultaneously. Velocity dependency of each variable was assessed for the whole group with linear regression. With increasing velocity, the saddle forces at walk were mainly influenced by the accentuated rocki

This study aims to investigate the sensory preferences of children aged 8–12 regarding the material and characteristics of wooden toys. Taking wooden rocking horses as research samples, this study selected three types of wood, respectively Pinus taiwanensis, Fagus sylvatica, and Juglans nigra, which are significantly different in appearance from solid wood commonly used to make wooden toys. The experiment was conducted through on-site observation and questionnaire surveys to record children’s preferences for wood characteristics, such as the characteristic factors of wood texture, color and lu

The horse is central to many Indigenous cultures across the American Southwest and the Great Plains. However, when and how horses were first integrated into Indigenous lifeways remain contentious, with extant models derived largely from colonial records. We conducted an interdisciplinary study of an assemblage of historic archaeological horse remains, integrating genomic, isotopic, radiocarbon, and paleopathological evidence. Archaeological and modern North American horses show strong Iberian genetic affinities, with later influx from British sources, but no Viking proximity. Horses rapidly sp

A fourth topic, which casts these into relief, is why some groups rejected the horse, or chose to adopt it very late in their history. The Great Basin was the first of the three areas to recei

The three remaining films (The Rocking Horse Winner, The Blind Man, and The White Stocking) seriously disturb the textual surface. This juxtaposition of strategies reveals that neither is superior. Both have resulted in remarkable films preserving Lawrence's substance even through the process of transformation. The contemporary Lawrence films i

Today nonconforming glenohumeral implants are a common choice for total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). Use of the conforming implant has decreased because of the “rocking-horse” effect [1], which leads to high stress and moments at the glenoid rim when the humeral head subluxes during range of motion. Retrieval studies have provided evidence that the rocking-horse effect is the major cause of implant loosening and fracture, delamination and deformation of the glenoid rim. Nonconforming glenoid implants, owing to a larger radius of the glenoid articular surface, can reduce the rocking-horse effec

Simulation of modern technologies has an important and informative history and an inspirational heritage. Simulation was utilised early in the development of aviation. Aircraft are controlled through a coordinated series of inputs from the pilot, similar to riding a horse. The difference is that falling from a horse is not as hazardous as falling from the sky. In response to this steep learning curve, the Antoinette simulator of 1910, operated by humans responding to the trainee´s inputs, was developed. The geometry of the glenohumeral joint is osseous, naturally nonconforming and minimally constrained, thus the essential requirement of a glenohumeral prosthesis in total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is prevention of joint degeneration and glenoid loosening. A variety of glenoid prostheses have been developed. Nonconforming glenohumeral implants are common for TSA. However, the nonconforming shape increases the instability when the humeral head is in the central region, where motion frequently occurs. Conforming implants can increase joint stability, but the “rocking-horse” effect [1] caused by
