Abstract:
Didymosphenia geminata is a microscopic single-celled freshwater diatom. The invasive behavior of D. geminata is greatly altering physical and biological conditions in streams and rivers; the stalk material byproduct that D. geminata produces has the potential to cover up to 100% of stream substrate with a thickness of 20 cm. Even though D. geminata is native to the United States, it is acting like an invasive species. Once only identified in nutrient poor waters, D. geminata has been expanding its native range and is occurring more frequently in nutrient-rich streams and rivers. We conducted a survey of D. geminata in Grand Teton National Park Wyoming and to our knowledge, this is one of the first surveys examining D. geminata in this area. We found and confirmed D. geminata in approximately 7 streams including; Phelps Lake Outlet 1.5x108 cells/m2, Taggert Lake Outlet 2.4x107 cells/m2, Phelps Lake Inlet 2.1 x 106 cells/m2, Jenny Lake Outlet 8.4x105 cells/m2, Flat Creek 2.9x107 cells/m2, Leigh Lake Outlet 1.3x104 cells/m2, and Fish Creek 9.2x105 cells/m2. Potential commonalities in the sites where D. geminata was found and confirmed in Grand Teton National Park include lake outlet streams and high traffic areas.

Abstract:
Massive osteolysis known as Gorham-Stout disease is a rare idiopathic disorder typically affecting long bones in a unifocal pattern. Angiomatosis is strongly connected to the osteolysis. Weather angiomatosis is the cause or the result of osteolysis is subject of intense discussion (Kawasaki et al. (2003), Möller et al. (1999), Radhakrishnan and Rockson (2008)). There are about 200 cases described since 1955. Our patient is a 77-year-old female patient with osteolyses of both shoulders involving the proximal humerus, lateral clavicle, and the glenoid. Under bisphosphonate therapy, the progressive osteolysis stopped on the right side and showed progression on the left. With the patient complaining about severe rest pain and impaired function, we performed surgical reconstruction by implantation of total shoulder prosthesis three months after onset of symptoms. Our case shows a possibility of primary and early surgical reconstruction with good clinical outcome.

Abstract:
Research into the behavior of elastic waves in thin-layered gas-bearing geological structures depends on the choice of geophysical and mathematical models of natural geological media and the numerical methods of problem solving. Hence the efficiency of a quasi-homogeneous, isotropic fractured-porous two-phase medium with given physical and mechanical properties. We have suggested a method of calculating empirical relationships between volumetric compression, porosity and pressure in porous rocks of an arbitrary geological region. Data on Zaluzhany wells were used to calculate the correlation and empirical relationships between reservoir properties and parameters of elastic waves and to distinguish dry and oil-gas saturated rocks. The least square technique made it possible to determine the correlation between the compressibility factor of fluid-saturated rocks and their porosity and pressure. Discrimination between oil and water was based on the density parameter. An algorithm has been suggested to do the corresponding calculations. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are as follows: – developing a numerical analytical predictive model for interpreting acoustic data on thin-layered rocks which is based on the correlations between their dynamic physical (effective wave propagation velocities, amplitude attenuation coefficients and their energy absorption) and reservoir (porosity, fracturing, compressibility) properties; – applying the proposed model and software products in geophysical exploration to interpret the geological and geophysical data on the structure and physical characteristics of sections and the physical properties of gas-bearing basins. In seismic acoustic exploration, the numerical model has to include experimental geological and geophysical data on the peculiarities of rock occurrence in the investigated area, with the physical and mechanical properties of different territories showing considerable variation. Such input data, as well as structural features and scattering properties of rocks (density, bedding, microporosity), ensure a significant increase in the accuracy of the numerical analysis. Preliminary testing was based on the data on the elastic moduli and S-wave velocities for dry and fluid-saturated rocks. Calculations were made of the elastic moduli and P-wave velocities for dry and fluid-saturated rocks of the Western oil and gas region of Ukraine (Zaluzhany-18 and Zaluzhany-19 wells). The aim of this work was to demonstrate the efficiency of the predictive method by examining the reservoir rock properties of the wells and to evaluate their gas saturation using the acoustic logging, geophysical and petrophysical data.

Abstract:
Lymphatic filariasis is the most common cause of acquired lymphedema worldwide (Szuba and Rockson, 1998). It is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions, and its effects are devastating. With over 100 million infected persons, it ranks second only to leprosy as the leading cause of permanent and long-term disability.Wuchereria bancroftiis the etiologic agent in 90% of cases. There is a dearth of published MRI findings with pathologically proven active infections, making this entity even more of a diagnostic dilemma. Imaging may provide the first clue that one is dealing with a parasite and may facilitate proper treatment and containment of this disease. This is the first report of pathologic correlation with MRI findings in the extremity in active filariasis. The magnetic resonance images demonstrate an enhancing, infiltrative, mass-like appearance with partial encasement of vasculature that has not been previously described in filariasis. Low signal strands in T2-hyperintense dilated lymphatic channels are seen and may depict live adult worms. We hypothesize that the low signal strands correspond to the collagen rich acellular cuticle. This, in combination with the surrounding hyperintense T2 signal, corresponding to a dilated lymphatic channel, may provide more specific MRI findings for active nematodal infection, which can prompt early biopsy, pathological correlation, and diagnosis.

Abstract:
AbstractThe U-Pb isotope ages and Nd isotope characteristics of asuite of igneous rocks from the basement of eastern England show that Ordovician calc-alkaline igneous rocks are tectonically interleaved with late Precambrian volcanic rocks distinct from Precambrian rocks exposed in southern Britain. New U-Pb ages for the North Creake tuff (zircon, 449±13 Ma), Moorby Microgranite (zircon, 457 ± 20 Ma), and the Nuneaton lamprophyre (zircon and baddeleyite, 442 ± 3 Ma) confirm the presence ofan Ordovician magmatic arc. Tectonically interleaved Precambrian volcanic rocks within this arc are verified by new U-Pb zircon ages for tuffs at Glinton (612 ± 21 Ma) and Orton (616 ± 6 Ma). Initial εNd values for these basement rocks range from +4 to - 6, consistent with generation of both c. 615 Ma and c. 450 Ma groups of rocksin continental arc settings. The U-Pb and Sm-Nd isotope data support arguments for an Ordovician fold/thrust belt extending from England to Belgium, and that the Ordovician calc-alkaline rocks formed in response to subductionof Tornquist Sea oceanic crust beneath Avalonia.

AbstractIntroductionMobile decontamination units are intended to be used at the accident site to decontaminate persons contaminated by toxic substances. A test program was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of mobile decontamination units.ObjectiveThe tests included functionality, methodology, inside environment, effects of wind direction, and decontamination efficacy.MethodsThree different types of units were tested during summer and winter conditions. Up to 15 test-persons per trial were contaminated with the imitation substances Purasolve ethyl lactate (PEL) and methyl salicylate (MES). Decontamination was carried out according to standardized procedures. During the decontamination trials, the concentrations of the substances inside the units were measured. After decontamination, substances evaporating from test-persons and blankets as well as remaining amounts in the units were measured.ResultsThe air concentrations of PEL and MES inside the units during decontamination in some cases exceeded short-term exposure limits for most toxic industrial chemicals. This was a problem, especially during harmful wind conditions, i.e., wind blowing in the same direction as persons moving through the decontamination units. Although decontamination removed a greater part of the substances from the skin, the concentrations evaporating from some test-persons occasionally were high and potentially harmful if the substances had been toxic. The study also showed that blankets placed in the units absorbed chemicals and that the units still were contaminated five hours after the end of operations.ConclusionsAfter decontamination, the imitation substances still were present and evaporating from the contaminated persons, blankets, and units. These results indicate a need for improvements in technical solutions, procedures, and training.RibordyP, RocksénD, DellgarU, PerssonS, ArnoldssonK, EkåsenH, HäggbomS, NerfO, LjungqvistA, GrythD, ClaessonO. Abstract:
Abstract. Setyastuti A, Purbiantoro W, Hadiyanto. 2018. Spatial distribution of echinoderms in littoral area of Ambon Island, EasternIndonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 1919-1925. Echinoderms samples were collected in Ambon Island as part of the marine resourceinventories designed to study the biodiversity of Maluku Archipelago. The purpose of this works was to investigate the abundance andgenus richness of echinoderms within the five sampling sites using single transect orthogonal to the coast consisted of 10-quadrat plot of5x5m, the distance between plots was 10m at each site. Furthermore, this study also aimed to understand the relation of substrate typeand community composition within those five sites. The substrate was classified into four types (sea-grass, macro-algae, sand, rocksand/or dead coral) noted by presence/absence mark at each plot. The differences in total abundance and genus richness among thosesites were analyzed using an Analysis of Deviance following a Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) fitted by Poisson and log link. However, in term of genus composition, the data were visualized using a Principal Coordination Analysis (PCoA) plots calculated fromBray-Curtis dissimilarity based on the log (x+1) transformed abundance data. A total of 910 individuals of echinoderms belonging to 19genera was successfully recorded. Total abundance of echinoderms was different significantly among sites (p<0.05). The most abundantechinoderms were collected from Tanjung Tiram, approximately 68.71 individuals/quadrat, which was almost 1.4 times than those inLiang and even 4 times than those in Suli. The genus composition between sites was significantly different (p<0.05). The composition ofsubstrate types among sites was not significantly different (p>0.05), however the composition of substrates correlated significantly withthe composition of echinoderms genus (p<0.05, rho=0.36). In conclusion, more complex the substrate variation in an area will affect thediversity and abundance of Echinoderms community therein.

Abstract:

Abstract:
