Abstract:
Abstract: As a cornerstone of traditional Chinese culture, The Analects embodies profound ecological philosophy. This paper examines the translation strategies employed by the renowned comparative philosopher Roger T. Ames from the perspective of eco-translatology. By analyzing the linguistic, communicative, and cultural dimensions of eco-translatology, the study reveals how Ames extensively uses verb and gerund structures while deliberately avoiding the application of conjunctions that indicate causality. This syntactic approach reconstructs the interpretive context of Confucian texts for Western readers, showcasing the Confucian worldview of "unceasing generativity" and the relational thinking of "all things bearing yin and embracing yang". This stands in contrast to the mechanistic causality and creationist cosmology of Western theology. Keywords: Eco-Translatology, the Analects, Roger T. Abstract:
Ames’ new book confronts the controversies aroused by role ethics, and expounds various aspects of its core notion, namely, Confucian relationally constituted, narrative, focus-field conception of persons or human becomings, which Ames regards as “a good place to start” for what he calls a “gestalt shift” not only in moral philosophy but also in many other philosophical inquiries. Ames is adept at blending cross-cultural intellectual sources from different time periods in the creation of a strong argument. In the book, he also adequately addresses the concerns raised by his critics. Despite my overwhelmingly positive impression of the book, there are nonetheless several aspects of it that might evoke critical reflection or demand for further clarification.

Abstract:
Confucian classics embody the essence of Chinese culture and serve as a crucial medium for its transmission. With their profound ideas, these works have attracted global attention. As an emerging bridge for cross-cultural communication, Knowledge Translation Studies (KTS) focuses on the translation of key concepts, which is an essential issue for the international dissemination of Confucian classics. Roger T. Ames offers a unique and innovative perspective on Confucian studies, making significant contributions to the English translation of Confucian classics by interpreting Confucian thought from a comparative philosophy viewpoint, taking into account the historical and cultural contexts of both the East and the West. This paper uses the lens of KTS to explore Ames' English translation practice of Confucian classics, examining the overseas spread of Confucianism while providing a case reference for the practice of translation studies in China.

Abstract:
碩士
國立中山大學
中國文學系研究所
107
Roger T. Ames is a Western sinologist and philosopher who is proficient in Confucianism. In the process of cross-cultural research between Chinese and Western philosophy, Roger T. Ames tried to construct a set of cultural interpretation frameworks consistent with Confucian studies, and finally formed a set of methodology on cross-culture between Chinese and Western philosophy. In the early period of the Analects of Confucius in the process of spreading to the West, the translation of "Christianization" caused a serious misinterpretation and misinterpretation of Confucius'' thoughts in the Western world. In order to change this situation, Roger T. Ames and Henry Rosemont Jr. re-translated the Analects of Confucius. Translation is the first step for Roger T. Ames to reconstruct the Confucian ethics of the pre-Qin period. Through the philosophical translation of the Analects of Confucius, he highlights the "philosophical connotation" of Confucianism, eliminates the stereotypes under the hegemony of Western cultural centralism, and introduces the world to the truth of the text. Confucius thought. The pre-Qin Confucianism understood by Roger T. Ames tries to highlight the interpersonal ethical significance of the primitive concepts such as authoritativeness /observing ritual propriety /appropriate/tian in Confucius''s thought. For the translation of these Confucian core terms, Roger T. Ames is very cautious, closely follows the text, studies from the source and semantics, criticizes many of the original inappropriate translations, and tries to find suitable “word(s)”/ concept-group to translate some key concepts in the Western world. In the context of the pre-Qin ethics constructed by Roger T. Ames, he emphasized the relationship of Confucian society, highlighting the non-transcendental cosmology of ancient China, which is completely different from the West: the inner cosmology; and he pointed out that Confucius’s greatest significance is to provide an example that everyone can learn, that is, the way of “becoming human” in Confucian context. This is also an important reason why Confucianism attaches importance to "becoming an exemplary person." From the cosmology to the road of "learning to become human ", Confucian society is closely related to relations that to some extent, can respond to the modern crisis of Western liberal rights-based democracy. What is more, it is becoming an important cultural resources to transform individualism in the Western world. In short, the focus of this thesis is to discuss the particularity of The Analects of Confucius: A Philosophical Translation and then to explore the unique interpretation of Roger T. Ames''s Confucian ethics in the pre-Qin period, and to understand the significance of Roger T. Ames''s reconstruction of Confucian ethics in the pre-Qin period for the reconstruction of contemporary Confucianism.
