The present research proposes, from an interview conducted with high school students in a regular school, and a literature search on the humanistic approach of Carl Rogers, to discuss the applicability of the author’s theories in high school education. It is introduced, first, the information about the school in which the survey was conducted, as well as the characteristics of the interviewed group. Also, it is presented the “etnopesquisa”, methodology chosen for this work. Hereafter, I perform a study of the humanistic approach of Carl Rogers for Psychology and Education, showing his approach as a counterpoint to B.F. Skinner behaviorism, which also gained strength in the 1970s. Thus, pointing out that the current education model followed by the school, to focus the schooling on examinations for entering college, is not promoting meaningful learning, that is, learning that motivates changes in thinking and behavior in students. The interview analysis shows that students, despite not knowing Carl Rogers and his approach, are looking for an education fairly close to that suggested by the author. From the Rogers approach, it is suggested a more reflective school, centered on the student, where he or she will pass through a self-discovery process and therefor, a meaningful learning experience, having the teacher as a facilitator of this process.

Abstract: In this work many of the identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type given by Slater are considered. In 1985, Andrews, introduced a general method in other to extend to two variables identities of this type in order to get, as special cases, some important functions of Ramanujan. Santos, in 1991, gave conjectures for many of the family of polynomials that appears in those extensions providing the proofs for some of them. Sills, in his Ph.D. thesis in 2002 ,has implemented procedures allowing the proofs of the conjectures given by Santos. In the present work, in a form different from the one given by Andrews, parameters are introduced in the sums of the identities in such a way to get, in each case, generating functions giving combinatorial interpretations for partitions where ¿numbers¿are represented as ¿vectors¿and that can give, as special cases, combinatorial interpretations for many of the identities given by Slater

Abstract:
This thesis offers an edition of the selected letters of the poet Samuel Rogers (1763-1855). Rogers was a member of extensive social networks in the late eighteenth and early to mid- nineteenth centuries. The Introduction looks at how the study of correspondence reveals the author to be an individual actively engaged in sociability. The content of a letter, its intended recipient, and the format of the letter itself, reveals the intricacies of the cultivation of sociability. The letter fulfils four crucial functions: to inform the recipient, thank them, ask a request of them, and create future opportunities for sociability, demonstrating the multi-faceted role of correspondence. Chapter One, ‘Rogers’s Reputation’, examines the history of Rogers’s critical reputation, which is particularly pertinent in this project which seeks to reinstate Rogers in current conversations on eighteenth and nineteenth century poets. Chapter Two, ‘Rogers and his Correspondents’, follows on from this by demonstrating how Rogers’s correspondence sheds light on professional, political and literary identities for both men and women in society. These chapters which recover Rogers’s reputation and highlight his role in the professional development of his acquaintances, are followed by the edition of the selected letters of Samuel Rogers, including the editorial methodology for the transcriptions, the footnoted letters themselves, and concludes with summative biographies of the correspondents included in this edition. A list of all of the letters written by Rogers which have come to light during this project, are included as the appendix.

Abstract:

The Person Centred Approach (PCA), founded by Carl Rogers, can only be justified from a set of values and ethics and not only as an application of skills and knowledge. Furthermore, from studies of Figueiredo (1996), it is established the importance of ethos as a search for a place to the Other in the constitution of psychologies. In what refers to the place of the Other in the constitution of subjectivity, Freire (2002) investigates the place to alterity in several modern psychologies and states that in PCA, the place for Levinasâ radical alterity is vacant, as in other psychologies. The Other, as postulated by Levinas (2008 [1961]), is precedent and transcendent to the I; not being possible to totalize and understand it fully; it shows the dimension of the strange in the psychological experience. This Other is not so dear figure to psychologies as it appears to be. On the other hand, Peter Schmid (1999) conceives that ethics is the first issue to be considered when it comes to PCA, either its theory or its practice. Hence, the present paper aims to present the work of Peter Schmid to the Brazilian community of Rogerian approach. The perspective of this author is grounded in an important dialogue with the philosophies of dialogue and a vision of the human as radically a person, which offers another way to face the alterity in Rogerian theory and practice. Such change presents a fruitful approach to ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. A methodology for the study, we used an almost-in-method inspired by the philosophies of Levinas (2008 [1961]) and Derrida (2007), in which we seek, among other things, to put on display the polysemy of the studied speeches. We conclude that, despite the divergences among the prospect formulated by Schmid with Levinasian ethics, doing readings of the main concepts of the PCA, it shows a closer relationship with that one and a new way of dealing with the alterity within the framework of the Rogerian approach. With this work, we hope to foment a greater dialogue and production on the clinical and psychotherapeutic care of the person and the place offered to otherness in Rogerian psychology.

Abstract:
The topic of this thesis belongs to the theory of integer partitions, at the intersection of combinatorics and number theory. In particular, we study Rogers-Ramanujan type identities in the framework of the method of weighted words. This method revisited allows us to introduce new combinatorial objects beyond the classical notion of integer partitions: the generalized colored partitions. Using these combinatorial objects, we establish new Rogers-Ramanujan identities via two different approaches. The first approach consists of a combinatorial proof, essentially bijective, of the studied identities. This approach allowed us to establish some identities generalizing many important identities of the theory of integer partitions : Schur’s identity and Göllnitz’ identity, Glaisher’s identity generalizing Euler’s identity, the identities of Siladić, of Primc and of Capparelli coming from the representation theory of affine Lie algebras. The second approach uses the theory of perfect crystals, coming from the representation theory of affine Lie algebras. We view the characters of standard representations as some identities on the generalized colored partitions. In particular, this approach allows us to establish simple formulas for the characters of all the level one standard representations of type A(1) n-1, A(2) 2n , D(2) n+1, A(2) 2n-1, B(1) n , D(1) n

Abstract:
Although the GRC National Historical Park, Vincennes, Indiana, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966, its development as an Historic Designed Landscape had never been thoroughly researched. Archival research and a field survey of the site evaluated the existing conditions of the grounds and structures to determine their historical significance, integrity and physical condition. The George Rogers Clark Memorial, the park grounds, and other structures and features in and near the park setting were determined to be a historic designed landscape that used formal, classical design principles in a response to the City Beautiful Movement, popular at the beginning of this century, to memorialize the achievements of a man and people significant to our national history. An analysis comparing the historic plans and designers' intent for the park to the existing conditions has resulted in a rehabilitation recommendation for the park that includes the process for returning the park to its original design and an advocation for the development of the historic park setting.

This work reflects the dialogue’s century XIX between philosophy and psychology, when the latter sought to achieve scientific status, and defined its object of study. This return is due to the fact that new science, seeking its place among the other, stay away from their original object in order to adapt the methods of positive science, which eventually led to the objectivism behavior. Also due to the fact that the philosophy does not leave the task of understanding the subjectivity, especially the phenomenological tradition. Moreover, it is justified to see that the psychology, developed in the clinic, does not leave the understanding of subjectivity, since it considers as a fundamental element of the human relationship with the world. To resume the dialogue between philosophy and psychology, seeks to bring to psychology the opportunity to understand what had been its original object. To achieve this dialogue, we chose to use the work of the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and the psychotherapist Carl R. Rogers, with the objective of pointing between the two thinkers and distances the approximations in the treatment of the concepts of subjectivity, freedom and existence. In making the works of Sartre, it was found that the subjectivity and spirit has the freedom, which is the annihilation through which you can open a crack in its interior, including the not in his being, enabling it to support itself from the choices you make to your life. Therefore, Sartre points to the indeterminacy that is the relation of subjectivity to their being and the world, since "the existence precedes essence." In Rogers, it was found that subjectivity is fundamental to achieving the organic trend, as is the freedom that allows you to choose various ways to meet their needs and thus realize all possible organic.

Lewis, Gayle Arnn. "Leadership Products As Innovations In The Context Of Rogers' Diffusion Theory." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29839.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, two implementable leadership products were analogous to innovations, when framed in the context of Rogers’ diffusion-of-innovation theory. Thus, the products’ respective dissemination patterns were compared and contrasted-- quantitatively through purchase numbers, and qualitatively through opinions and events recollected by early users. The case-study approach was central to the investigation, and the results supported the Rogers model with regard to most constructs. The results pertaining to the S-shaped (sigmoidal) prototypical distribution curve, however, were enigmatic. The inverse conformity of sales figures with the S-shaped distribution curve implied that the dissemination process began during the field-testing stage rather than the purchasing stage. The organizational structure of the user institutions (targeted social system construct) conformed to Rogers’ theory that autonomy and teamwork characterized management climates where innovation tended to flourish. Field-testers and other early users were opinion leaders as construed by Rogers. The fact that twice as many field tests were conducted for the Case Studies as for the Simulation was likely a factor in the disparate 6:1 ratio of units of Cases sold to units of the Simulation sold for three consecutive years. Other factors possibly accounting for the disparate sales came from the attributes-of-innovation template which framed five generic attributes--compatibility, relative advantage, complexity, trialability, and observability. Both products conformed to the attributes as conceptualized by Rogers. The main difference that influenced the disparate sales was the greater complexity of the Simulation than of the Cases, although cost may have been a compatibility/relative advantage contributory factor. Finally, the study’s results indicated that dissemination parameters may have been narrowed by (a) the absence of mass media communication channels as part of the dissemination strategy at the awareness stage, and (b) lack of market research to focus the naming and packaging of the products for optimum compatibility and relative advantage. Researchers and change agencies can use these findings to improve future dissemination strategies and product designs.

Abstract:
In the fall of 1938, Marion Kenworthy, child psychologist, and Clarence Pickett, director of the American Friends Service Committee, began designing a bill that would challenge the United States's government's strict immigration laws and allow persecuted children to come to the United States and live in American homes. The Wagner-Rogers Bill, named for Senator Robert Wagner of New York and Representative Edith Rogers of Massachusetts and introduced in February 1939, sought to allow the entry of 20,000 refugee children from Germany. At the time, multiple domestic factors limited the willingness of American politicians to meet this problem head on: high unemployment rates after the stock market crash in 1929, an isolationist sentiment after the impact of World War I, and xenophobia. These factors discouraged the lawmakers from revising the quota limit set on obtainable visas established by the 1924 Immigration Act and allow outsiders into the United States. These few actors who supported the Wagner-Rogers Bill reflect a hidden minority of the American public and political body that fought to help Jewish refugees by standing up to the majority of citizens and politicians against higher immigration into the United States, and the story of the this Bill demonstrates what might have been possible and illuminates 20th century models of American humanitarianism and its role in creating international refugee protection.

Diebel, Kenneth Edward. "Isozyme variation within the Fraser fir population on Mt. Rogers, Virginia." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54517.

Abstract:
The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) on Mt. Rogers is an isolated relic population and part of the southern Appalachian spruce-fir ecosystem. The population has, so far, been able to withstand the impacts of insect infestation and the possible influence of atmospheric deposition factors which may be causing mortality in other regions of the southern Appalachians. It was hypothesized that population vigor may be due to a unique genetic structure. The objective of this study was to determine the amount of genetic diversity within this population and to relate observed diversity to environmental variables. To quantify the genetic structure 304 trees from 35 plots were genotyped for 13 isozyme loci. Four loci were polymorphic using the 95% criterion. At a fifth locus there were two rare alleles with a combined frequency of approximately 3%. Range wide studies of eastern fir species have shown that other populations are more diverse. There were no significant differences in gene frequencies among three arbitrarily defined subpopulations or among the 35 plots. There were no significant correlations between any environmental characters and isozyme frequencies. There was a significant difference among subpopulations for seed weight and germination value as well as a slight, yet significant, correlation between seed weight and elevation, germination value and elevation, and germination value and aspect. Spatial autocorrelation analysis, Wright's F-statistics, Nei's genetic distances, and Gregorius' "𝜹" index all indicated little or no substructuring of the population. It is suggested that a population bottleneck (a drastic reduction of population numbers), which may have occurred following the last glaciation, is the cause for the relatively low genetic diversity found in the population. The lack of substructure is likely due to extensive gene flow.

Abstract:
As a disruptive innovation, IoT has been creating a high impact over organizations’ current strategies and business models. This continuous process of change will have an increasing influence on how organizations and industries as a whole conduct their businesses, and is set to have an active role towards the development of entirely new business models and markets. With the development of IoT technologies, and its predicted exponential spread across all sectors of society, one can conclude that the future holds many opportunities for organizations looking to explore new ways of capturing and creating value, but at the same time there are also plenty of challenges to be addressed. While the diffusion and adoption process of IoT has been an ongoing phenomenon over the past decade, there is still not much certitude as to how organizations ought to adjust in order to successfully integrate IoT technologies in their structure and operations. In parallel fashion, there have also been many difficulties in ensuring that different smart, connected devices and ecosystems are able to effectively communicate between each other, as achieving interoperability has become one of the major concerns associated with IoT. The main focus of this study is to analyze the process of how organizations are currently integrating IoT within their businesses, while also investigating causes that hinder interoperability, and evaluating the future potential deployment of the Open IoT ecosystems in companies. For our research we have followed a case-study approach where we conducted semi-structured interviews with managers and project leaders from two organizations conducting pilot studies on Green IoT and Open IoT, and where one has been adopting IoT technologies in its business. Theoretically, we draw on a framework by combining Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations theory and Christensen’s theory of Disruptive Innovations in order to analyze the integration of IoT into businesses’ core structure. The research goes through a functional framework that outlines the process of IoT adoption while also presenting the present challenges that are faced by the actors in the industry and the key enablers for successful IoT integration.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the meaning of the concept of ‘environmental pre-existences’ in the theoretical thinking of Ernesto Nathan Rogers. The theme is chosen as a privileged point of view for investigating Rogers’ contribution to the debate on the legacy of the Modern Movement in post-WWII, when the necessity of paying attention to the theoretical reflections on the relationships between environment and project intensified. The problem was intended as the search for an adequate language for the machine era and for a formal order for the recent urban development to be constructed according to its rapport with the existing city. It was developed, within Rogers’ theoretical work, as a reflection on the dialectical contraposition between intuition and the handing down of knowledge, contingency and universality. The thesis shows the cultural connections through which such dialectic was able to animate a unitary discourse, from the teaching of the Modern Movement to the typological and urban researches of the Italian culture of the Sixties. Bringing the concept of environmental pre-existences back to its original acceptation, by retracing the intellectual relationships established by Rogers with the Modern Movement and the CIAM and through the deepening of the editorial project built during the editorship of the review “Casabella continuità”, the thesis aims to establish the notion’s value of an important contribution to the theory of architectural and urban design. Thus, the concept of environmental pre-existences becomes the analytical key for investigating the influence of the VIII CIAM debate on The Heart of the City and of Rogers’ participation to the drafting of the Estudio del Plan de Buenos Aires in 1948-1949 on the maturation of the editorial project for “Casabella continuità” (1954-1965) through the assignment of a precise value to archetype, phenomenology and tradition in the definition of the relationship between architecture and history.

This research aims to investigate the design of psychopathology in the theory of Carl Rogers and its implications for contemporary clinical practice of psychotherapists who recognize themselves trained in Person Centred Approach. For this we present the evolution of the notion of psychopathology in the work of Carl Rogers, from the beginnings of his theory through the work "The Clinical Treatment of the Problem Child", prior to the development of their innovative proposal for brief moment; strolling through the phases of the theory of the author which were divided into: Phase No Policy (1940-1950), Reflective Phase (1950-1957), Experiential Phase (1957-1970) and Phase Collective and Inter-Human (1970-1987) ( Wood, 1983; Cury, 1987; Moreira 1990, 2001, 2007, 2010 and Holland, 1994). Also addressed the idea of psychopathology in phase, named by Moreira (2010/2013), as Post Rogerian or Neorrogeriana which consists of the practice and the Person Centered Approach contemporary literature. To understand how psychotherapists who recognize themselves trained in Person Centred Approach work with the issue of psychopathology in their clinical practices contemporary conducted qualitative research through critical phenomenological method proposed by Moreira (2004.2009) that finds its philosophical foundations in phenomenology Merleau-Ponty (1945/ 2006). Ten phenomenological interviews we conducted, which subsequently underwent worldly phenomenological analysis with the following starter question "How is it for you to work with patients who have some type of psychopathology? ". The Person Centred Approach appeared in the subjects' employees as the basis for clinical work with psychopathology; Attitudes Facilitators were enlarged, from the findings of this research, the attitudes of: recognizing psychopathology understand psychopathology, service availability, connection and co facilitation; Diagnosis as a label has been criticized by psychotherapists, but the importance of understanding the same was emphasized; the diagnostic manuals and the partnership with psychiatry were described as relevant in all cases; have exposed the difficulties and challenges of working with these patients and ultimately the experience of professionals in that specific type of therapeutic process was presented. Keywords: Psychopathology, Carl Rogers, Person Centred Approach, Psychotherapy, Contemporary.
Abstract:

This paper has the objective to contribute about the professional actions in terms of training and development forming staff in organizations. Has as reference a bibliographic study, a discussion points to some considerations from Paulo Freire and Carl Rogers, take us in order to elaborate the criticism the process of formation in companies. To unfold this question, the principles from Paulo Freire were analyzed in terms of resistance to the process technician of learning that keeps the individual without autonomy; comprehend the attitudes from Carl Rogers that brings about a considerable learning in T& D (Trainning and Development) ; identify the conceptions in the organizational context; analyze the possibility, by facing that the employees of a company be treated as individuals into their own learning and not as gears, by Carl Rogers’ and Paulo Freire’s theories. From the critical analisys, it is possible to affirm that the possibility is really by means of facing and of the resistance before an organization a context that keeps pointed to a development of competences, giving enphasis in the act of doing, in the operational, in a prescritive form. This way, it was not the objective propose a new model of T & D (Trainning and Development) and try to apply it; it would be an illusion, it is not possible to change the process without changing the way people think the process, which inserts itself in a context not in favour of the economy and at the significant learning. According to Freire and Rogers, the individual that Works has the capacity to develop and elaborate its history, and it is not according to the pattern and also with the direction that the formation processes have taken in the companies. The posibilities of facing are based on firm actions, radical measures, in the dialogue and in the problematization in Freire and Rogers, on basic atitudes experienced by the one that facilitates, promoting freedom of participation of the employee as individual of its own learning. This way, working in the “gaps”, resisting to the determination of the T & D (Trainning and Development) programs the formation process in the company can be modified, where the voices of who teaches and who learns will be heard, mainly the ones who learn.

"Rogers' concept of the fully functioning person: An adequate portrayal of human freedom?" Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/7637.

Full text
Abstract:
Carl Rogers, a leading figure in the Third Force Psychology, was keenly aware of the inadequacies of scientific psychology. He accurately observed that the main problem with psychology as a natural science is its approach, or philosophical presuppositions regarding the nature of the human being. For scientific psychology, persons are predetermined objects and human behaviour is nothing but causally determined reactions to external stimuli. In Persons or science: A philosophical question (1955) Rogers attempts to develop psychology into a human science. This science adopts a new approach, one which recognizes human freedom. From this new approach emerges his alternative view of the optimal human being, the fully functioning person. The purpose of this research is to explore the extent to which the Rogerian view of human freedom, as it is expressed in the concept of the fully functioning person, adequately establishes the specific difference between persons as free subjects and the determined objects of the natural sciences. The method adopted for this study is philosophical analysis. We will first situate Rogers in the historical and philosophical context in which he was trained and educated and which led him to oppose scientific psychology (chapter I). Next, the analysis (chapter II) will focus on the distinctive features of Rogers' fully functioning person. The evaluation (chapter III) will confront Rogers' attempt to develop a science of persons with the work of researchers known for their contribution in making psychology into a human science. These researchers are: Giorgi (1970), Luijpen (1962), and Strasser (1963). (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
John Rogers Herbert (1810-1890) is hardly ever mentioned in the various histories of nineteenth- century art, yet he was considered one of the most important artists of his time. During his sixty- year career, Herbert was admired by his colleagues, the press and public for his strong narrative ability and high ideals of art. Herbert's oeuvre demonstrates accomplished technique in many genres of painting. He began as a renowned portraitist, expanded into romantic and poetical dramas, history painting, orientalist scenes, landscapes and seascapes. His reputation was assured when he found himself among the artists favoured with fresco commissions at the New Palace of Westminster. However, the paintings for which he is best known are the biblical scenes he set in the real landscape of the East. These he infused with devout ideas of ideal sacred art, attempting to create a new visual expression of Catholicism for Victorian England. The object of this PhD is to re-establish Herbert into the story of Victorian painting; to examine his contribution to the Royal Academy and wider art circles, and how his Catholicism influenced his work. This thesis contains the first extensive biography ever written about Herbert, placing his life and work in context. His career is examined in detail, with special consideration of his impact on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and his important commissions at the New Palace of Westminster. also investigate his philosophy of art: his fascination with the East and his role as a Catholic influenced his sacred painting. Herbert's sacred art is truly 'Catholic', and this is contrasted to Victorian Protestant notions of sacred art, using various primary sources.

Abstract:
This investigation into the rapid expansion of prison construction and mass incarceration in Eastern Kentucky under the leadership of Congressman and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers aims to determine why this policy has continued to be a viable political strategy for Rogers despite its apparent failure to advance social and economic development in the region. This analysis suggests that the Rogers Case can be used as a case study to greater understand the proliferation of political power available to elected officials in ANY district where the democratic incentive structure encourages politicians to represent the interests of private corporations and industries instead of constituents as long as they can count on their campaign contributions and the protection of their incumbencies.

This master thesis proposes an epistemological inquiry within the concept of Organism as developed along the theoretical fieri of Carl Rogers. This fieri is hereby taken as representative of what to be made or to become in a science not arrested by its own previous conceptions. As to advance this research: it has been identified the phases among the theoretical fieri of Carl Rogers; the understanding of Rogers concerning the Organism as presented in each of his intellectual phases; considered the main theorists and academic influences Rogers recognized upon his own work; made explicit the broader epistemological frameworks which informed Rogers understanding of Organism. This thesis has been inspired by the historical-method developed by Jean Piaget as an epistemological approach for scientific research which focus on recognizing the ideas that have supported the development of a concept or a theory. This methodology was based in a deductive formulation as for what may have grounded the notion of Organism as formulated in the original texts as well as from those who were theoretically influential on Rogers system. Coming from a selection of those pieces of work explicitly referring to the concept of Organism, we may infer Rogers was profoundly part of this cultural moment. Not only restricted to assimilating and elaborating these diffused influences at his experience, his Organismic conceptualization turned possible the integration of different dimensions as such Personality (I/Me), Society (interrelations) and Nature (Cosmos). At each stage of his thought, Rogers indicated the following influences on the construction of that conception: (1) in non-directive couseiling â the functionalism-pragmatism north american and new psychoanalysis of Rank, Horney and Sullivan; (2) in client-centered therapy â repeat the previous influences and increases scientism and its north american applied Psychology, Gestalt Psychology and Kurt Lewin, educacional, social and politic philosophies, and theorists of personality; (3) in transition from client-centered therapy and person-centered approach, the impact of the experiencing concept of Gendlin, experience with groups, the performance in education, reflections of alternative perspectives and behavioral sciences and studies on organism and self-actualization Goldstein, Maslow, Angyal and allusions to Whyte; (4) in person-centered approach, it adds to studies of organism and self-actualization, the research of Szent-Gyoergy and the emergency of Capra, Prigogine and Maruyama systemic paradigm and holistic. This present thesis led us to reveal a new intelligibility traced with Rogers notion of Organism where emergency a cosmological approach for the person which does not restrain itself to the Personality. Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis proposes that the cruising voyages of Dampier, Woodes Rogers and Shelvocke were not, as David J Starkey suggests, ‘an anachronistic activity’ of minor historical significance, but were of considerable contemporary importance and provided a model of British maritime endeavour that was to be widely disseminated and through literature had an enduring impact on the public imagination. They were more successful in terms of financial return and more impressive as maritime achievements than has previously been recognised. The voyages are placed in the historical context of South Sea exploration and plunder beginning with Drake’s 1578 circumnavigation and ending with Anson’s 1740 expedition. The purposes, origins, costs and rewards of each voyage are investigated using HCA, Chancery and East India Company records (a number of which are cited for the first time), contemporary newspapers, manuscript and printed first-hand narratives, Such records confirm how each voyage embodied - in its attention to detailed plans, reliance on written agreements, constitutions and governing councils - British commercial values. A full account of the range and scale of commercial investment involved supports the argument that the voyages were of considerable contemporary interest and significance. Contemporary responses to the printed accounts are recorded and there is analysis of how they link to new and rapidly evolving literary forms. The total financial rewards of the three voyages were considerable – amounting, at a conservative estimate, to more than £240,000 (£17.65 million in today’s money). They were not repeated partly because the risks appeared to outweigh the potential rewards, but largely because efforts to take a share of South American wealth began to focus on a state solution involving a large naval force. Nevertheless the voyages and the narratives that followed provided an important contribution to the debate – central to British foreign policy during the first half of the eighteenth century – over how to exploit the ‘inexhaustible fountain of gold’ that was Spanish South America. They influenced trade and economic policy through their impact on the South Sea Company and naval strategy by providing models for Anson’s expedition. They were also, through their published narratives, instrumental in the development of a new literary form (the novel) and the genesis of an enduring literary genre (maritime fiction). They had a wide and long-lasting influence on English literature, its forms and styles. Robinson Crusoe (and therefore the whole novel form), Gulliver’s Travels and maritime literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have their origins in the books of Dampier, Rogers, and Shelvocke.

Abstract:
This study examines the scholarship of J. A. Rogers and Rogers' use of vindicationist African-American history as a tool to illustrate his own ideas about humanism. Rogers' use of One-Drop ideology, Great Man history, and the philosophy of the bran of history combined into a subtle tool for undermining the entrenched racial attitudes of white supremacy during the twentieth century. This study was based on the premise that Rogers' use of vindicationism as a tool for humanism made his particular brand of vindicationist history relevant to Africana history. A historiographic critical approach to vindicationist history is used in order to determine what relevancy vindicationism has to Africana history and to what extent Rogers' humanism infused subtle arguments, contributed to Rogers' relevancy to Africana history. An examination of the goals and methodologies of other vindicationist scholars was utilized to find points of similarity and difference with Rogers' scholarship. This contrast of Rogers with other vindicationists allowed the salient points of Rogers' relevancy to be distilled. The conclusions of this study suggest that Rogers' relevancy is in his contribution to Humanism. Rogers attempts to demystify and debunk the idea of race and the history of racial intermixing, along with his championing the idea of the unity of humanity are more relevant than his vindicationist history. Additionally this study shows that both the critics of Rogers and those vindicationist historians who have followed in his footsteps have missed the subtlety in his writing. Both have viewed Rogers merely as a vindicationist. Whereas vindicationism' s tableau of black heroes is a reactionary response to Eurocentric history, Rogers' use of One-Drop ideology to debunk the idea of race was revolutionary.

Abstract:
Eisenstein's symbols, defined by Beilinson in the 1980s, are special elements in the motivic cohomology of modular curves. Beilinson has shown that their integrals are special values of L functions of modular forms of weight 2.Part of this thesis concerns the regularized integrals of Beilinson elements. Using a new method of Rogers and Zudilin, we show that these integrals gives us L values of modular forms at negative integers. This generalize the recent work by Zudilin and Brunault. Our formula is in accordance with Beilinson's conjectures. In this computation, we systematically study the generalized Mellin transform. In addition, we extend it to certain functions with exponential growth. We also use the extended modular symbols by Stevens to formulate our results. The Rogers and Zudilin method is also a powerful tool for evaluating double L functions. Inspired by an example from Shinder and Vlasenko, we show more generally that many values of double L functions of Eisenstein series can be expressed in terms of L functions of modular forms. Tornheim and Mordell have defined certain double zeta series. In collaboration with Zhang, we define and study the Mordell-Tornheim Eisenstein series. Using Cohen's series, we give explicit formulas for these series

Abstract:
Conflict among recreationists in natural resource settings is a long-term problem that continues to grow in many areas. This study was conducted to provide an assessment of conflict between hikers and horseback riders in the Mount Rogers High Country of Virginia. Conflict was examined using three separate measures: crowding, impacts and interference. Examination of an index measure of conflict revealed that 64% of hikers experienced conflict toward horseback riders, while only 3% of horseback riders reported conflict due to hikers. Because of the clearly asymmetric nature of the conflict, the conflict predictor variables (past experience, wilderness involvement, place attachment and perceived similarity) were examined for the hiker population in the study. Discriminant analysis revealed that the model tested can predict with more than 68% success whether hikers will experience conflict due to horses. The perceived similarity of values variable was shown to be the most important and perceived similarity of socio-economic status the second in importance in explaining conflict. Hikers that perceived horseback riders to be different from themselves in how they value the High Country and in their socio-economic status were more likely to experience conflict with horseback riders than hikers that perceived horseback riders as similar to themselves. Measures of past experience and wilderness involvement were also significant predictors of conflict. However, relative to the perceived similarity items, these variables did not contribute much information or "predictive power" to the model. The two place attachment factors, place identity and place dependence, were not significant in the model.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to bring Rogers and Kierkegaard into productive conversation with each other, across disciplines, around the themes of self, authenticity, and relationality. The purpose is to show that people can still learn a great deal from these thinkers, particularly by reading each of them in light of the other. Rogers and Kierkegaard wrote in different historical periods and cultural settings. However, by identifying some cognate concepts (in English) we can appreciate how, for both of them, the central task of life is to promote human well-being, in community with each other, and in humble relation to a higher good or ideal. This thesis shows more specifically that Rogers' theory of person-centeredness and Kierkegaard's theory of Christian neighbor-love both reflect the conviction that being an authentic self if necessary for sustaining good relationships with others. Both authors argue that being in right relationship with others is, in turn, essential to self-actualization and authenticity.
