Abstract:
Thesauri are important tools for many Natural Language Processing applications. Roget's Thesaurus is particularly useful. It is of high quality and has been in development for over a century and a half. Yet its applications have been limited, largely because the only publicly available edition dates from 1911. This thesis proposes and tests methods of automatically updating the vocabulary of the 1911 Roget’s Thesaurus. I use the Thesaurus as a source of training data in order to learn from Roget’s for the purpose of updating Roget’s. The lexicon is updated in two stages. First, I develop a measure of semantic relatedness that enhances existing distributional techniques. I improve existing methods by using known sets of synonyms from Roget’s to train a distributional measure to better identify near synonyms. Second, I use the new measure of semantic relatedness to find where in Roget’s to place a new word. Existing words from Roget’s are used as training data to tune the parameters of three methods of inserting words. Over 5000 new words and word-senses were added using this process. I conduct two kinds of evaluation on the updated Thesaurus. One is on the procedure for updating Roget’s. This is accomplished by removing some words from the Thesaurus and testing my system's ability to reinsert them in the correct location. Human evaluation of the newly added words is also performed. Annotators must determine whether a newly added word is in the correct location. They found that in most cases the new words were almost indistinguishable from those already existing in Roget's Thesaurus. The second kind of evaluation is to establish the usefulness of the updated Roget’s Thesaurus on actual Natural Language Processing applications. These applications include determining semantic relatedness between word pairs or sentence pairs, identifying the best synonym from a set of candidates, solving SAT-style analogy problems, pseudo-word-sense disambiguation, and sentence ranking for text summarization. The updated Thesaurus consistently performed at least as well or better the original Thesaurus on all these applications.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents an implementation of an electronic lexical knowledge base that uses the 1987 Penguin edition of Roget's Thesaurus as the source for its lexical material---the first implementation of a computerized Roget's to use an entire current edition. It explains the steps necessary for taking a machine-readable file and transforming it into a tractable system. Roget's organization is studied in detail and contrasted with WordNet's. We show two applications of the computerized Thesaurus: computing semantic similarity between words and phrases, and building lexical chains in a text. The experiments are performed using well-known benchmarks and the results are compared to those of other systems that use Roget's, WordNet and statistical techniques. Roget's has turned out to be an excellent resource for measuring semantic similarity; lexical chains are easily built but more difficult to evaluate. We also explain ways in which Roget's Thesaurus and WordNet can be combined.

Abstract:
Lexical resources are machine-readable dictionaries or lists of words, where semantic relationships between the terms are somehow expressed. These lexical resources have been used for many tasks such as word sense disambiguation and determining semantic similarity between terms. In recent years some research has been put into automatically building lexical resources from large corpora. In this thesis I examine methods of constructing a lexical resource, not from scratch, but rather expanding existing ores. Roget's Thesaurus is a lexical resource that groups terms together based on degrees of semantic relatedness. One of Rogets Thesaurus' weaknesses is that it does not specify the nature of the relationships between terms, it only indicates that there is a relationship. I attempt to label the relationships between terms in the thesaurus. These relationships could include: synonymy, hyponymy/hypernymy and meronymy/holonymy. I examine the Thesaurus for all of these relationships. Sources of these relationships include other lexical resources such as WordNet, and also large corpora and specialized texts such as dictionaries. Roget's Thesaurus has other weaknesses including a somewhat outdated lexicon. Our version of Roget's Thesaurus was created in 1987 and so does not contain words/phrases related to the Internet and other advances since 1987. I examine methods of creating a hypernym hierarchy of nouns. A hierarchy is constructed automatically and evaluated manually by several annotators who are fluent in English. These hypernyms are intended to be used in a system where a human annotator is given a set of hypernyms and indicates which are correct and which are incorrect. This is done to facilitate the process of constructing a lexical resource, a process which was previously done manually. I import over 50,000 hypernym relationships to Roget's Thesaurus. An estimated overall accuracy of 73% is achieved across the entire hypernym set. As a final test the new relationships imported to the Thesaurus are used to improve Roget's Thesaurus capacity of calculating semantic similarity between terms/phrases. The improved similarity function is tested on several applications that make use of semantic similarity. The relationships are also used to improve Roget's Thesaurus' capacity for solving SAT style analogy questions.
