Abstract:
The importance of Korean Peninsula in Russian foreign strategy is based on the need to preserve peace and stability in the Russia's Far East "soft underbelly" and to be a part of international efforts to solve the Korean problem, as well as to promote regional economic cooperation. In 1990-s Russia's position on the peninsula weakened, mainly because of the rupture of ties with North Korea, while relations with South Korea were reactive in nature. Rebalancing relations with the two Koreas in 2000-s increased Russia's involvement into Korean settlement, including the 6- party format. Russia/s r

Sub-Saharan West Africa has remained largely a blank space on the world rock-art map, in spite of a steady trickle of reports during the past century on pictograph and petroglyph sites in the West African sahel and savanna belts. It seems that the nature of the rock art reported, predominantly ‘geometric’ and saurian motifs, and ‘stick figures’, as well as its apparent recent age, formed little incentive for in-depth studies of rock art in this region. From sub-Saharan Mali, for example, only two sites have been published to a satisfactory standard (Huysecom 1990; Huysecom et al. 1996). The ri

Indiepop was, and is, a musical genre that coalesced around UK punk and post-punk in the early 1980s. From punk, indiepop borrowed certain ideas about the politics of cultural production. What differentiated it from punk was its sound: a decidedly pop emphasis on short, melodic song structures and seemingly simple instrumentation. In embracing independent production, indiepop staked a claim for subculture authenticity over the inauthentic mass products of the mainstream music industry. Yet the defining musical elements were characteristic of the historically feminine pop idiom. The result was

Abstract:
The many different nitrogen-containing oxygenated volatile organic compounds that are present in the troposphere play important roles in the chemistry of our atmosphere. They can be emitted directly into the atmosphere, such as in the case of amides that are widely used as organic solvents, starting materials, or intermediates in different industries (e.g., synthetic polymers, manufacture of dyes, and synthesis of pesticides). Amides are formed in situ as intermediate products in the degradation of amines (e.g., see Tuazon et al., 1994; Finlayson-Pitts and Pitts, 2000). Nitrogen-containing oxygenated organic compounds are formed in the atmosphere also via reactions of alkoxy (RO) and alkyl peroxy radicals (RO2) with NO or NO2 leading to alkyl nitrates, alkyl nitrites, and peroxy acetyl nitrates. However, primary sources of these organic species have also been suggested such as diesel and other engines and biomass burning (e.g., see Simpson et al., 2002). Alkyl nitrates (RONO2) have been detected in both the urban and the remote troposphere (e.g., see Roberts, 1990; Walega et al., 1992; Atlas et al., 1992; Ridley et al., 1997; and Stroud et al., 2001; see also section I-D). Nitrates are formed as minor products in the reaction of peroxy radicals with NO. The nitrate yield increases with the size of peroxy radicals and can be as high as 20–30% for large (>C6) radicals (Calvert et al., 2008). Peroxyacyl nitrates (RC(O)O2NO2) are important constituents of urban air pollution. They have been identified in ambient air (e.g., see Bertman and Roberts, 1991; Williams et al., 1997, 2000; Nouaime et al., 1998; Hansel and Wisthaler, 2000; also see section I-D). They are formed from photochemical reactions via RC(O)O2 + NO2. A major role of these compounds is their capacity to act as a reservoir for NOx that can be transported from polluted urban to remote regions that are poor NOx regions and where their presence can increase NOx levels (Roberts, 1990). As with other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), once released to the atmosphere, nitrogen-containing organic compounds are expected to undergo degradation primarily via reaction with hydroxyl and nitrate radicals, reaction with ozone, and photolysis. Thermal decomposition is an important loss process for the peroxyacyl nitrates.

Abstract:
Since the 1960s, developing Asia has been going through a historically unprecedented process of urbanization and industrialization. This process, which began in East Asia with Japan after World War II (Johnson 1982), then spread first to Korea (Amsden 1989; Rock 1992; Westphal 1978), Taiwan Province of China (Wade 1990), Hong Kong, China (Haggard 1990), and Singapore (Huff 1999) and subsequently to Indonesia (Hill 1996), Malaysia (Jomo 2001), Thailand (Pongpaichit 1980; Rock 1994), and China has spawned enormous interest. While most of the debate surrounding the East Asian development experience has centered on the proximate causes of its development trajectory and the economic and political consequences of this trajectory for the East Asian newly industrializing economies (NIEs), because Asia looms so large in the global economy and ecology, interest has belatedly turned to the environmental consequences of East Asia’s development path and to the political economy of governmental responses to deteriorating environmental conditions in the region (Brandon and Ramankutty 1993; Rock 2002a). The focus on the environment came none too soon. Rapid urbanization, industrialization, and globalization in the East Asian NIEs, when combined with ‘grow first, clean up later’ environmental policies, have resulted in average levels of air particulates approximately five times higher than in OECD countries and twice the world average (Asian Development Bank 1997). Not surprisingly, of the 60 developing country cities on which the World Bank (2004: 164–5) reports urban air quality, 62% (10 of 16) are in developing East Asia, all but one of the rest are in South Asia. Measures of water pollution in East Asia, such as biological oxygen demand (BOD) and levels of suspended solids are also substantially above world averages (Lohani 1998). With the prospect for further rapid urban-industrial growth rooted in the attraction of foreign direct investment and the export of manufactures in East Asia, the rest of Asia, and the rest of the developing world as the East Asian ‘model of development’ spreads, local, regional, and global environmental conditions may well get worse before they get better (Rock et al. 2000). At the core of this environmental challenge in East Asia is rapid urban industrial growth.

Abstract:
This chapter presents digital forms of anthropological restitution developed in the late 1990’s and early 2000 by Barbara Glowczewski with different Aboriginal peoples for their own use and a larger audience. She designed the CD-ROM Dream Trackers (Yapa Art and Knowledge of the Australian Desert published by Unesco) with 51 elders and artists from the Central Australian community of Lajamanu in the Northern Territory. Quest in Aboriginal Land is an interactive DVD based on films by Indigenous filmmaker Wayne Barker, juxtaposing four regions of Australia. Both projects aimed to explore and enhance the cultural foundations of the reticular way in which many Indigenous people in Australia map their knowledge and experience of the world in a geographical virtual web of narratives, images and performances. The relevance of games for anthropological insights is also discussed in the paper. Reticular or network thinking, Glowczewski argues, is a very ancient Indigenous practice but it gains today a striking actuality thanks to the fact that our so-called scientific perception of cognition, virtuality and social performance has changed through the use of new technologies.
