Full textSmoking and passive smoking is a public health problem. It is derived from the smokers right to smoke and the non-smokers right not to be exposed. This can lead to conflict between non-smokers and smokers when non-smokers want to avoid exposure to tobacco smoke, while smokers are entitled by law to smoke in an outdoor environment. The purpose of this study is to investigate smokers and non-smokers experiences of smoking with the hope of finding a solution where both groups experiences can be met. Non-smokers do not want to be exposed to smoke and smokers want to smoke undisturbed. There is a problem with the tobacco prevention work carried out in Sweden due to the preventions are aimed to make it inconvenient for the smoker to smoke. Therefore, there is reluctance to find a solution that smokers may perceive as positive. The study was conducted through 20 interviews with 10 non-smokers and 10 smokers, half of both gender, and qualitative content analysis ,and qualitative content analysis. I found 12 main categories, six from each group. In this study, I concluded that it is about the places where the groups met. Few non-smokers are disturbed of smoking if they are not exposed to it. Places and situations where non-smokers feel that they are exposed to smoking are at entrances and while waiting for public transport. According to the results the two groups supports introduction of special smoking places. The reasons for this may differ slightly between the groups, smokers want to smoke undisturbed and non-smokers do not want to be exposed to smoke. There is desire for a distance of at least 15 meters from the public building or public transport but it may as smokers express not be too far away. Smokers have limits on how far they should have to walk to smoke. They do not want to run from the special smoking place to catch the train / bus. The most interesting is that when it comes to non-smokers, is that they say they are exposed especially at large entrances and places where they are waiting for public transport, while this sites offer exactly what smokers want in terms of the design of special places for smoking. There are roofs, ashtrays and seating and there is nothing to prevent them from smoking there. The sites offer exactly what smokers believe well arranged smoking places are.

Full textPublic health touches many areas of society and it is vital that all people are taking note of the information and knowledge about health. Smoking is a major public health hazard that constantly exists and many projects are launched just to get a decrease in tobacco use and prevent ill health due to smoking. It is particularly important to study smoking among young people. The purpose of this paper is to study how smoking behavior change among young people between 11 and 15 years of age and how smoking behavior can be related to alcohol consumption, socioeconomic and physical activity. The method implicated the usage of survey data from the Public health Agency of Sweden completed questionnaires. The survey is about schoolchildren’s health habits and is conducted every four years since 1985 / 1986. The selected youth in the study were those who were born in 1994 and there were 3465 respondents. They were then 11 and 15 years old when they responded to the questionnaires. The result after processing in the SPSS program showed that there were more girls than boys that smoke but the boys had an earlier smoking debut. Those who smoke thrived in lesser degree in life than non-smokers. Also decreased interest from parents, lack of physical activity and increased stress were factors that went hand in hand with children's smoking. It is important to start with interventions in early adolescence as it can prevent the start of the teenagers' smoking habits. Also linking this effort against smoking with alcohol as the factors seems to be connected. A key factor for the teens is parental involvement. Working for an increased physical activity in leisure time may also be a factor that could lead to a decrease in smoking.

Full textSmoking is one of the most common risk factors for heart and vascular diseases in Sweden. There are many scientifically proven methods to quit smoking. Among the well established ones are counselling and Motivational Interviewing together with different nicotine replacement therapies. The aim of this study was to investigate the support smoking patients are given not to smoke at ward 10 at UMAS. The chosen method is a survey study and the result is presented as quantitative data. The respondents are patients who were present at the ward (n = 75) during the two weeks when data was collected. It is a non-probability sample, a consecutive selection. The result shows that a large number of patients are not asked if they smoke. It is also more common to ask men than women if they smoke. Among the smoking patients nicotine replacement therapy is the most frequent method offered to stay off smoking. Further on the result shows that several of the patients who answered that they did not smoke were previous smokers. Considering the size of data collected the conclusions made in the study should be looked upon tentatively. For the same reason there is no possibility to generalize the result and convert it on to other areas.
