Full textThe prevalence of acts related to sexual discrimination and cases of hate crimes in our country are alarming. In this regard, influential factors have been found in the development of positions about homosexuality, such as the way of parenting, the media and the social environment. In this investigation, the correlation between the sexual role of a heterosexual person and their attitudes towards homosexuality was analyzed. A sample of 268 heterosexual adults was taken into account. The results indicate that there is a positive correlation (0.007) towards homosexuality regardless of the sexual role, in addition, a greater identification with the male sexual role was identified. These findings highlight the cultural change and the acceptance that is being generated towards homosexuality as a result of interactions and education. In addition, the socially constructed beliefs about each sexual role are revealed, with masculinity being the predominant role due to the characteristics related to it. However, an increase in the identification with femininity is observed due to the search to develop new competences and soft skills required in social spaces.

Valerio, Leviante Joanna.

Full textThe objective of the present study was to discover if there is a relationship between stereotypes of gender roles and attitudes towards women in leadership positions in a group of women workers of two organizations in Metropolitan Lima (N = 260). To this end, the three vignettes that make up the Scale to measure Attitudes towards Women in Leadership Positions and the Sexual Roles Stereotypes Scale (SRSS) were applied. The results show that there is no relationship between attitudes towards women in a leadership position and stereotypes of gender roles. Also, it was observed that women leaders who present communal attributes and mixed attributes when exercising their role receive positive attitudes and there is greater acceptance of them, in comparation whit women who have only agnostic attributes, who trigger neutral attitudes. Additionally, no differences were observed in attitudes towards women leaders, according to the organizational category of the study participants. Finally, there were no differences between the stereotypes of gender roles that were assigned to women and men in leadership positions.

Full textThe research aimed to explore the relationship between ambivalent sexism, political ideology, and gender stereotypes in science and engineering students. Therefore, a mixed investigation was conducted. The first study was qualitative and, through interviews, the gender stereotypes in science and engineering careers were explored. The results show that science and engineering spaces are challenging for women, because a vision based on gender roles is maintained through traditional masculinity and the rejection of femininity are promoted. Therefore, their capabilities are questioned and their presence is not fully accepted. Based on the information collected, a scale of gender stereotypes in the fields of science and engineering was developed. The second study was quantitative (N = 160) by which the relationship between ambivalent sexism, political ideology and gender stereotypes associated with science and engineering was analyzed. It was found that the variables are directly related and both right-wing authoritarianism and gender stereotypes in science and engineering have an effect on the levels of ambivalent sexism. Furthermore, it was observed that the variables have a different impact on the components of ambivalent sexism.

Full textMusic is an important cultural product in people's lives. It is present in various spaces throughout his life, especially in the current context, where technology facilitates listening at any time and place. In this sense, musical genres such as reggaeton, which are widely accepted worldwide, would also be readily available to the population, especially youth. The purpose of this research is to know the role that reggaeton plays in the lives of young people, seeking to explore if it has any role in strengthening the prescriptive nature of gender stereotypes and roles, as well as if it contributes to normalizing violent behaviors that may be present in their daily life. For this purpose, two qualitative methodology studies were carried out. In the first one, a critical discourse analysis of 10 successful reggaeton songs was performed. The results show the reproduction of traditional gender stereotypes in the content of the songs, where women tend to be discriminated and undervalued, and men have a dominant role. In the second study, 20 young people and 3 specialists in reggaeton were interviewed regarding their perceptions and interpretations of this musical genre. The findings show that the entire sample recognizes the discriminatory and violent content towards women in reggaeton. However, there would be no awareness of how the daily listening of this musical genre contributes to the reproduction of traditional gender stereotypes and roles, nor to the reproduction of behaviors related to symbolic violence.

Full textThe present research seeks to compare the conceptions of sexuality and the practices in sexual health among adolescents from private schools in Metropolitan Lima. The study had a qualitative methodology, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with adolescents between 16 and 17 years (three women and three men) in search of common themes and differences according to gender. It was found that adolescents have a common conception of sexuality as relational, and differ by gender in terms of its expression, since women are positioned as vulnerable to abuse. Likewise, they share a common biomedical vision of sexual health, which is reinforced by the messages from the school and the family. Despite this, they came to recognize that there may be emotional risks when having sexual acts, these are presented in different ways due to the difference in gender roles. Women feared for the bond with the sexual partner while men did not consider their emotions when facing a sexual act. On the other hand, there is a preference for the use of condoms in men, since culturally they dominate their use. The influence of the family is shown as marked by traditional gender roles, where women are denied sexual freedom. The influence of the family is considered important in their decisions, only by the participating women. Finally, the participants recognize that there are shortcomings in the information given in the school.

Full textThe aim of this research was to understand the teaching beliefs about their role in the process of construction of sexual and gender identity in pre-school education. For that purpose, semi-structural interviews and a sociodemographic record were used considering a qualitative reasearch methodology and a phenomenological design. In general, three central beliefs about the construction of sexual and gender identity were found, from which two groups were stablished: “construction of sexual and gender identity free of stereotypes” and “construction of sexual and gender identity with a certain degree of stereotypes”. Furthemore, there were found beliefs related to the need of work or deep into some issues of early childhood sex education, for which the teachers gave three main reasons: due the nature of the pre-school work, because it implies talking about homosexuality and because there is a distorted approach to the gender approach. Considering the objective of the study, two models of teaching were found: (1) to support and guide students in their process of construction of sexual and gender identity through material and situations that incentivize reflection; (2) promote equality between men and women, with an emphasis on combating the obstacles that women find throughout their lives.

Full textThis doctoral thesis presents a research focused on the main collective festivals and ceremonies of Alaskan Alutiiq, Yup'ik and Inupiat historical societies. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries various explorers, missionaries and anthropologists described in several accounts their musical behaviours. These sources show how these people used these festive and ceremonial contexts as part of a strategy to maintain a social organization where the men had the ideological control of the society. The ethnoarchaeomusicological research focused on these Alaskan societies is presented as a interdisciplinary method that generates tools that allow to study the musical behaviour and social organization of prehistoric and historic hunter-gatherer people. The critical analysis of historical sources and archaeological work focused on Alutiiq, Yup'ik and Inupiat festival and ceremonial contexts, can indicate its essential elements. Some of these elements have a material result that can be located through different archaeological techniques and analysis. This methodology allows us to confront the study of the role of sexual division in the ceremonial and festive contexts opening new ways for ethnomusicological and archaeological researches.

Full textThis research is a systematic single case study of a woman victim of violence from his spouse in a brief psychodynamic therapeutic process. Its objective was to describe elements of hegemonic masculinity and femininity present in the relational narratives of the patient with significant others and explore if these elements changed during the psychotherapeutic process. To select the relational configurations articulated by gender power, linguistic and discursive categories related to gender hegemonic were used. The result shows that relational configurations were driven from components of gender hegemony (CRH) as well as relational dynamics that contain wishes that were not congruent with hegemonic normative (CRNH). Regarding the latter, at the beginning of treatment, the wishes appeared to be frustrated. Nevertheless, within the therapeutic process, they were better integrated into the relational configurations of the patient. Towards the end of the therapeutic process, a better balance was found between the CRH and CRNH, which seem to reflect changes in the consultant's mental functioning, such as integration, differentiation, and ambivalence tolerance.

Full textThis thesis analyzes the painting “Mi madre y yo” (My mother and I) which is a work of art which uniquely displays motherhood. This allows us to suspect that there are multiple ways of representing motherhood which is in itself a way to respond critically to an essentialist position that considers only one-way of representing maternity. While the hegemonic discourse proposes only one representation of maternity based on the naturalization of sexual difference, we have used Foucault’s contributions to observe that this naturalization actually blinds us from conceiving other ways of representing maternity. We rather hold a view by which the hegemonic discourse’s representation of motherhood depends on practices and relations of power that have been naturalized In this painting, bodies occupy a prominent place, and from Elizabeth Grosz’s and Lucy Lippard’s contributions we can read the body as a political category which has all the power it needs to question rationalist, naturalist, or biological determinist explanations in favor of corporeal, psychological and socio libidinal processes which are more cultural than natural. As well, the contributions of Norma Fuller, Elizabeth Badinter and Robert Connell, have allowed us to oppose the category of hegemonic masculinity to the representation of maternity understanding it as a relational category. Consequently, Freud’s contributions have made us aware of a male anxiety that appears when he has to deal with its bisexual character. We believe that this anxiety is linked to the representation of motherhood because its way of conceiving sexual difference is characteristic of a hegemonic discourse that is based on a hierarchical opposition between sexes. We have analyzed the elements of the picture from psychoanalytical, post colonial and esthetic categories in order to clarify the importance of these elements in relation to the representation of motherhood. The background of the painting has been analyzed from a Freudian psychoanalytic theory called the cloaca mother to evoke a rejection towards the feminine. The painting of the flowerpot in Christian Bendayan’s representation of motherhood has been 5 approached from a feminist and postcolonial perspective through the contributions of authors like María Lugones, Oyéronké Oyewùmí and Griselda Pollock to show that the still life genre can be understood as part of an institutional segregation towards women in the arts between the xvi and xviii centuries. And finally, we have debated the presence of the matrimonial ring in its symbolic materiality and from the foundations set by Gail Rubin and Carol Pateman in relation to the matrimonial social and sexual contract. We have concluded this analysis by showing how the artist uses anti esthetic strategies to undermine hegemonic systems. Key words: Representation of motherhood, hegemonic masculinity, sexual difference, bisexuality, Christian Bendayán, “Mi mother and I”.

Full textThis research aims to analyze the multiple experiences of two groups of young professional women and the specific processes that lead to their emergence as socially, culturally, geographically, and historically conditioned figures. Understanding that the subjects cannot be isolated from their historical conditions, the empirical approach is determined by the ethnographic analysis of two focus groups in Barcelona (Spain) and Puebla (Mexico). Beyond perceiving the labor market as a whole, shaped under the same characteristics, we also focus on observing it as a place marked by the forces of local traditions, which includes different power relations, culture, politics, etc. This process has constituted a "new model of woman" that is evaluated differently from its predecessors with regard to life at home and in the workplace. In this sense, Puebla and Barcelona are transnational spaces in which professional women find themselves within the multiple forces of global capital and the traditional culture of gender binaries. Our findings reveal that success in building a career path is not casual and it depends of the available resources. It is also not neutral as it depends in varying degrees on gender. The multiple arrangements from the families of origin in parallel with the hegemonic practices in their specific social space, mediate the forms of access of these women to high labor hierarchies. This phenomenon has different expressions. In one group of women, we discovered how highly qualified women workers are configured through individualistic neoliberal rhetoric as perfect subjects to be exploited. By labeling the many elections of women as "rational", it is left to question the moral and practical demands of two schemes of work that make the combination between career and family to be incompatible, which inevitably leads to the reproduction of traditional forms of gender. In the other group, we find the existence of a complex fusion of individual and affective interests within the entire extended family. For the young women in this group is difficult to create a scenario away from the guidelines of the family clan. Paradoxically, it is thanks to these robust and varied family relationships that these women are able to climb faster in the labor hierarchy. In both cases we note that despite the change in the opportunities for women there is a persistent sexual division of labor even in areas considered to be neutral or in those groups perceived to be more educated.

Full textThis thesis explored the role of sexually explicit material (SEM) on the Internet in adolescent sexuality and education. Does SEM on the Internet affect adolescent sexual attitudes, behaviors, and other facets of sexual functioning, such as fantasizing, masturbation, and sexual self-esteem? In addition, is the Internet becoming the new sex educator? The sample consisted of 492 college students (340 females, 152 males) between the ages of 18 and 23 who took an anonymous, online survey. Among the sample, 98% had seen SEM before the age of 18, first exposure typically occurring around the age of 12. The most popular reason for seeking SEM on the Internet was curiosity. It was found that with more exposure to SEM on the Internet, there was more permissive sexual attitudes, higher levels of sexual behavior, and more sexual fantasizing. In addition, masturbation was more SEM-dependent and compulsive with more exposure. Further, more exposure was related to the twelve aspects of sexuality. For instance, more exposure was related to higher sexual self- esteem, higher sexual-preoccupation, higher sexual-satisfaction, and lower sexual-fear. While males were seeing more SEM on the Internet than females, both males and females were seeing SEM on the Internet for the first time around the same age, though females had more negative feelings about it, and their sexual attitudes and behaviors were similarly affected. It was concluded that SEM on the Internet is a normative adolescent experience and that the Internet is the new sex educator, as adolescents are using it as an informational resource.

Full textThe family in Western society is increasingly perceived as threatened by a myriad of socio-cultural changes, and statistics suggest that family breakdown is cause for major concern to clinical practitioners working with families. This study attempts to examine the issue of female role transition within the family with a view to understanding the dynamics of conflict and breakdown which are generated by departure from the female role stereotype. A cross-disciplinary review of the literature has sought to place the discussion of case-study material within a broad psycho-social context. The emphasis throughout is on the interplay between the complex macro variables and the intra-psychic functioning of individual clients. Five case histories are used to identify the etiological and diagnostic features which interact within the family as a sub-system. Concluding discussion offers a psychodynamic interpretation of the case material.

Full textSexual satisfaction is of elemental importance to many people. Research has consistently demonstrated the importance of communication, especially self-disclosure, in intimacy and sexual satisfaction. Literature on intimacy places an emphasis on self-disclosure and partner’s receptiveness. However, little research has examined the associations among all of these variables. This study examined sexual self-disclosure, intimacy, partner’s responsiveness, and sexual satisfaction in a community sample through an online survey. Participants consisted of 308 females and 67 males. Participants were recruited through online advertisements to complete anonymous surveys assessing sexual satisfaction, sexual self-disclosure, intimacy, and partner’s responsiveness. It was hypothesized that intimacy would be a mediator in the relation between sexual self-disclosure and sexual satisfaction, intimacy would be a moderator in the relation between sexual self-disclosure and sexual satisfaction, and partner’s receptiveness would be a moderator in the relation between sexual self disclosure and sexual satisfaction. Multiple regression and hierarchical regression were conducted to examine these hypotheses. The results demonstrated that intimacy mediates relation between sexual self-disclosure and sexual satisfaction. Contrary to our hypotheses, however, intimacy was not found to moderate the relation between sexual self-disclosure and sexual satisfaction. Partner’s responsiveness did not moderate the relation between sexual self-disclosure and sexual satisfaction. No differences were found between males and females. Implications of this study and their relevance to clinical applications were discussed.
