Full textThe status and role of women, who are considered subordinate in a social structure dominated by men, has changed thanks to their participation in work. This change has led to a clash between social groups and struggle within the women themselves. Employment broadens women’s role in society which raises their awareness of their individuation and gives them economic power. These two elements are major factors in the increase in women in work, in South Korea. By observing this evolution, adolescents can build a positive image of women’s professional roles which projects a non-discriminatory impression of the genders. This image is different from the traditional views and shows a facet of how women’s roles have evolved through generations. This research analyzes the influence of working women on the way adolescents develop ideas of the role of men and women. The findings enable us to predict new roles for women in South Korea in the near future. Once women are in employment, they become aware of themselves as individuals, capable of breaking free of subordination to male domination. This evolution provides new status to women. This status changes not only family and social links but also the traditional culture. Women’s role and status are no longer based on the traditional Confucian culture. Finally, the analysis has confirmed that women’s employment is the main factor in the evolution of culture in South Korea

Full textSocial time patterns rhythm our daily activities to the point of creating a framework of constraints which is so strong that it is difficult to break away from them. The major position occupied by working time is such that it constitutes a dominant time which encompasses and defines all other temporalities. An analysis of the development of laws relative to working time and the way time is used shows that the construction of temporal norms combines political regulations and local regulations. The former fix the laws concerning time-saving provisions (law of 24 July 1994, "loi Aubry") with the aim of constityuting time accruals for alternative and personal projects. The latter fix the collective agreements with a view to defining the scope of authorised usage. With the 35-hour week, the tempral accruals are used for a threefold reorganisation: work is restored to its rightful place, domestic tasks ae redistributed within the couple and a third sphere of activities is invented, neither professional nor domestic; a space for real personal projects. In all cases, thes temporal arragements are gender-related. But this gender division is evolving with these temporal reorganisations; each one being the oppotunity to renegotiate male/female relations

Full textThis thesis examines the effect of board gender diversity in corporate finance. The first chapter provides a survey of literature on board gender diversity in management science domain and conclude the chapter by highlighting the potential areas of future work in the board gender diversity and corporate finance domain. The next chapters empirically examine the effect of female directors in three important, yet not explored areas of finance in the context of the French market. The second chapter examines the effect of female directors on corporate cash holdings. Using a sample of French firms over the period 1998 to 2015, we document a significant positive relationship between women directors and two measures of corporate cash holdings. The results support the notion that female directors have a lower liquidity risk-taking propensity than their male counterparts. The third chapter examines the relationship between board gender diversity and the cost of equity. We document a significant negative effect of female directors on the cost of equity. The fourth chapter is based on the critical mass theory. The results suggest that attaining the number of at least three women increases the likelihood of dismissing poorly performing CEOs. In summary, the results validate the notion that women directors are risk averse, strict at monitoring executives, and they increase the value of firm

Full textOur research focuses on professional paths and career development of academics. Specifically, we want to understand how inequalities between women and men careers in higher education are built. Today, women represent 55. 7 % of students in French universities. However this presence hides inequalities between women and men in access to higher levels of academic hierarchies. In 2008-2009, women only represent 19. 1 % of full professors and 41. 2 % of assistant professors. How to interpret this paradox? How to explain this « glass ceiling » ? Our research focuses on the construction of individual paths of women and men and on choices made in early career, in order to understand differences observed between women and men accessing to the tenure. From twenty-five semi-structured interviews (thirteen women and twelve men, in Humanities or Science, at the end of their careers) and a discourse analysis, we compared their career paths. We highlight that the distribution of women and men in certain levels of the academic hierarchy, based on disciplines, is the result of various social processes. However, our research develops a particularly unexplored line of investigation centered on choices made during career and analyzed in terms of conflict at the heart of academics’ activity. Finally, we propose a theory in terms of activity conflicts
