Abstract:
Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and amending and subsequently repealing Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC, and the annex to resolution 202/2009 of the Council of Ministers of 10 November 2009 on the energy policy of Poland until up to 2030 indicate the necessity of increasing the contribution of renewable fuels in the energy balance of Poland. This increase is supposed to strengthen Polish energy security. The undertakings of the Polish government indicate the increase in utilisation of various renewable energy sources such as biomass. Due to that, new technologies connected with the management of the traditional energy sources, such as lignite, have to be developed. Due to its high moisture, lignite is perceived as a lowefficiency fuel. The calorific value of lignite can be improved upon by mixing it with biomass, e.g. sawdust, and briquetting it in roll presses equipped with asymmetrical layout compacting system. Such technology can be used only if the mixed ingredients are adequately prepared beforehand. Research in this field has been conducted in the Department of Manufacturing Systems AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow. Based on this research, PW 500 roll press design was prepared. PW 500 roll press is prepared for briquetting composite solid fuels based on a mixture of lignite extracted in Szczerców and two types of biomass: oat straws and spruce sawdust. The results of the aforementioned briquetting are presented in this article.

Abstract:
The article deals with theoretical and experimental studies of the compaction processes of various types of powdered polydisperse materials for the study of kinematic, design-technological and energy-power parameters of units. The basic laws of briquetting in press-roll units and the need for their constructive and technological implementation have been established. The calculation of the main energy-power parameters of the equipment for briquetting (pressing force; power expended by the roller and jaw pre-compactors; total power consumed by the roller press) is presented. It allows considering the physicomechanical characteristics and physicochemical properties of technogenic materials. The paper presents patent-protected designs of aggregates for briquetting polydisperse waste with both high and low bulk density. The necessity of preliminary compaction of briquetted charges during their molding is shown, which is effective in the implementation of any compaction process. The use of devices for preliminary compaction of the material and the forming elements of the grooved-toothed and cell-type rolls make it possible to obtain briquettes of a given geometric shape and dimensions, taking into account the requirements of the consumer. The results of theoretical and experimental studies can be used not only for the processing and disposal of secondary raw materials (polydisperse waste) of individual industries, but also for the production of various types of marketable products.

Abstract:
The aim of the work is to develop technical solutions aimed at creating a high-performance roller briquette press. The results of previous studies and the experience of creating roller presses of various designs, evaluating their production and technological efficiency are summarized. It was established that the basis for the development of an improved press design should be based on principles that ensure its simplicity, decrease in metal consumption, size, ease of operation, as well as the ability to provide the required physical and mechanical properties and quality of briquettes. It is shown that these principles can be implemented in the process of modernization of roller presses created earlier at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy. The roll press can be modernized by using mechanical and hydraulic devices to protect the rolls from overloading, developing new effective ways of attaching bandages and drive elements, using modern monitoring and control devices to regulate the operation of the press. Expansion of technological capabilities of the press is provided by using devices for distribution and pre-compaction of the briquetted charge. The choice of a rational scheme of deformation and calibration of the working surfaces of the press rolls ensures the optimization of the energy and power parameters of briquetting. The paper formulates recommendations and requirements for the creation of an improved high-performance roller press for briquetting a wide range of small fractional raw materials. Proposed a fundamental solution to the layout of the press.

Abstract:
Roll press briquetting of coal-biomass mixtures presents a significant opportunity to address feedstock challenges associated with co-utilization of coal and biomass in existing coal-fired facilities. However, several technical and economic barriers require further investigation prior to industrial utilization of coal-biomass briquettes. The scientific contributions presented in this dissertation are intended to address the most critical technical challenges pertaining to coal-biomass briquette feedstocks. As with any product of an agglomeration process, the primary technical challenge regarding coal-biomass briquettes is achieving and maintaining a high level of quality from production to utilization. Several laboratory-scale research investigations were conducted to address this challenge. The first study was conducted to identify, develop and refine methods to characterize the most important physical properties indicative of coal-biomass briquette quality. The outcome of this work is a set of recommendations for novel and refined methods to characterize important coal-biomass briquette properties. The second study was conducted to develop a novel method to identify the optimum water content of coal-biomass blends prior to briquette production. As a result of this study, the Briquette Proctor Test was developed to minimize the time and materials required to identify the optimum water content that corresponds to maximum quality of coal-biomass briquettes. The third study was conducted to evaluate the influence of feedstock variables, additive variables, and roll press operating parameters in the production of coal-biomass briquettes from various coal and biomass types. From this study, the influence of each parameter on the quality of briquettes was determined and optimum conditions were identified for a variety of coal-biomass mixtures. The fourth and final study was conducted to develop and evaluate methods to improve the water resistance of coal-biomass briquettes using wood-derived chemicals. Using these chemicals, the novel coating method developed in this study significantly improved the water resistance and weathered durability of coal-biomass briquettes.
