Abstract:
A low noise duplex bush chains with split rollers was developed through changing roller structure to reduce noise of bush roller chains. The split rollers could absorb more impact energy, mitigate meshing impact and reduce chain drive noise. The noise generated by different types of duplex bush roller chains was carried out to test in same speed, low noise characteristics of duplex sleeve chains with split rollers was verified. By analysis of testing data, noise level of duplex sleeve chains with split rollers compared with that of the other duplex bush roller chains was reduced by the average 3 ~ 8dB, and low 10 ~ 13dB than that of 16A simplex sleeve roller chains. The chains made chain drive significantly improve in the working environment, with steady transmission, strong bearing, low noise, and a significant noise reduction was achieved.

Abstract:
In order to mitigate the impact and the polygon effect of the chain and the sprocket during the meshing process and achieve the purpose of noise reduction, a Hlow noiseH nanostructured metal mesh-polyurethane composite material split roller chain was designed by means of changing structure and material of chain roller. Noise testing and frequency spectrum analysis were conducted, for the new roller chain and the other three kinds of the same specification chains with different structural rollers, on the closed force flow noise test bench researched and developed independently. The results show that the new roller chain can absorb some of the impact energy, and reduce vibration and noise of chain drive. The noise level generated by the new roller chain is significantly lower than the other tested roller chains, especially in high frequency and high speed. The difference in noise level is actually 3-11dB in driving sprocket speed of 1000r/min, and a significant noise reduction is achieved. The results also verify low noise characteristics of the new roller chain and rationality of design method.

Abstract:
In order to reduce chain drive noise, by changing chain roller structure to mitigate meshing impact and achieve the purposes of noise reduction, a kind of duplex chains with non-metallic elastic material split rollers was designed. To study noise performance of the chains, noise comparison test was done on the same specifications duplex roller chains, and the test results were analyzed and evaluated. The results showed that duplex chains with non-metallic elastic material split rollers could reduce the meshing impact and the polygon effect, which could effectively reduce vibration and noise in the process of chain drive. So the design was reasonable and feasible, noise level was reduced by 3-8dB and a significant noise reduction was achieved.

Abstract:
A refined numerical analysis of the dynamic behavior of roller chain drives is performed considering the roller assembly as a three-layer structure with mechanical clearance between each two of the mechanical components. Instead of using analytical method, explicit finite element technique is utilized for modeling and simulating the dynamic behavior of chain drives. The complete standard geometry of sprockets and all components of chain links are used in the developed model with minor geometry simplification. A primary goal is to achieve a more complete understanding of the dynamic behavior of chain drives especially in the transient vibration response of the engaging rollers, which is crucial for noise emission calculation. The simulated velocity response of the engaging rollers and roller-sprocket contact forces achieved using the full model are compared with what found by the simple model which has been adopted in analytical study of chain roller dynamics.

Abstract:
The binary row short-pitch transmission based precision roller chain highlights its radial flexibility and circumferential rigidity, it constructs a new type of harmonic transmission unit by replacing the tradition flexible wheel. Driven by a generator of mechanical harmonic wave the rollers of the binary row roller chain mesh with the teeth contour of the two inner gears which realizes reduction in small teeth difference and zero-tooth-difference synchronous output. The rotation components distribute uniformly on a plane. In theory, it is capable to eliminate dynamic imbalance factors. This paper detailed the principle of the harmonic drive meshing and gave out the design approach to control parameters of trough in the roller chain. Through the prototype testing, it confirmed the feasibility of this transmission mode.

We construct a two-dimensional model of the roller chain. By numerically integrating its equations of motion, we make predictions on the distances travelled by the roller chain, the code of the simulation being available online in the supplements. Finally, we compare the predictions with experiments, discuss the results, and suggest topics for further research.

Abstract:
A main reason that leads to the complex dynamic behaviors of roller chain is the impact during engagement. In this paper, a contact analysis methodology is proposed to study the complex dynamic behaviors of roller chain efficiently. Considering the actual tooth profile, a detection algorithm of roller-sprocket contact was presented. Multi-body dynamics was used to analyze the contact kinematics relationships for purpose of simulating the impact between roller and sprocket precisely. Based on Hertz contact theory, a non-linear contact model of roller-sprocket is developed. Introducing the model to the numerical simulation of a roller chain system, the results validate the effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:
This paper describes an improved chain link tension model for a simple two-sprocket roller chain drive. The model includes modified versions of previous models of the tension in the chain links, together with a new model for low-slack span tensions. The model allows the tension of a link to be calculated at any point in the chain drive more quickly and for a wider range of tight and slack span tensions than before. A new chain efficiency model is formulated, based on the losses due to sliding friction. Coupled with the chain link tension model, this can be used to predict the transmission efficiency of a chain. Experimental work undertaken on 0.5 in pitch industrial roller chains and bicycle chains has demonstrated that the chain efficiency model is accurate for moderate and high torque transmissions. At low torque, losses due to impact, adhesion and/or vibration become more significant and impair the accuracy of the model, particularly for heavier, industrial roller chains. The chain efficiency model enables certain design trade-offs to be carried out, such as the selection of the size of the overall system to achieve the right balance of transmission efficiency and weight.

This dissertation is dealing with the investigation of the load behaviour of accumulation roller chains. Initially, the structures of different types of accumulation roller chains are described, properties are compared and categorised. Based on the created understanding of acting tribological pairing and friction mechanisms, FEM analysis have been performed to evaluate occurring stresses and determine the thermal behaviour of the various material combinations. Within the testing procedures, breaking strength and fatigue strength have been investigated in accordance with DIN ISO 15654 [cf. DIN04]. A test bench has been developed for practically relevant testing of the chains, where determination of characteristic values can be done under hard testing conditions for two different chain types. The test bench ensures measurement and survey of accumulation forces, tensile chain forces (by torque moment at drive), chain speed, chain elongation and chain temperature during whole testing time. The last chapter of the dissertation deals with the development of a 'control and monitoring unit' for accumulation roller chains with various dimensions including proof of function by trials

Abstract:
The word media hype is often used as rhetorical argument to dismiss waves of media attention as overblown, disproportional and exaggerated. But these explosive news waves, as well as - nowadays - the twitter storms, are object of scientific research, because they are an important phenomenon in the public area. Sometimes it is indeed 'much ado about nothing' but in many cases these media storms have play an important role in political issues, scandals and crises. Twitter storms sometimes ruin reputations within hours. Although different concepts are used, such as media hypes, news waves, media storms, information cascades or risk amplification, all the studies in this book refer to the same process in which key events trigger a chain of reactions and interactions, building up huge news waves in the media or rapidly spreading social epidemics in the social media. This book offers the first comprehensive overview of this important topic. It is not only interesting for scholars and students in media and journalism, but also for professionals in PR and communication, crisis communication and reputation management.

The body and the space are the fulcrums of dynamic relationships creating cultures, identities, societies. In the game of interactions between individuals, groups and space, religions play a crucial role. During a ritual performance takes place a true genesis of a sacred space. This work analyzes the theme from a historical point of view, with a focus on Christian medieval Latin liturgies. Indeed, for Christian theology, related with the dogma of the Incarnation, the chair is itself the place of the manifestation of the sacred. Liturgy makes present and gives with life a new body. Together it generates a space, that interacts with the entire urban society, inside the eschatological dialectic between earthly and heavenly city.

Abstract:
The concept of madness as a challenge to communities lies at the core of legal sources. Medieval Communities and the Mad: Narratives of Crime and Mental Illness in Late Medieval France considers how communal networks, ranging from the locale to the realm, responded to people who were considered mad. The madness of individuals played a role in engaging communities with legal mechanisms and proto-national identity constructs, as petitioners sought the king’s mercy as an alternative to local justice. The resulting narratives about the mentally ill in late medieval France constructed madness as an inability to live according to communal rules. Although such texts defined madness through acts that threatened social bonds, those ties were reaffirmed through the medium of the remission letter. The composers of the letters presented madness as a communal concern, situating the mad within the household, where care could be provided. Those considered mad were usually not expelled but integrated, often through pilgrimage, surveillance, or chains, into their kin and communal relationships.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper deals with roller chain drives applied in combustion engines. In order to find characteristics for an optimal design, all components of a chain drive are taken into account. For a detailed analysis of the chain strand vibrations and the contact configurations each chain link, sprocket and guide is treated as a separate body. A nonlinear force element describes the joint forces, including elasticity, damping, backlash and oil-displacement. To determine real contact forces between a link and a sprocket or a guide, the exact contour and the mutual dependence of the contacts are considered. The impact of one link may influence the other links in such a manner that their contact configuration may change. In the mechanical model these contacts are represented by unilateral constraints. Applying the formulation of the linear complementarities including additional inequality conditions, the determination of a valid contact configuration after a change in the system structure is simplified.

Abstract:
Abstract A dynamic model for analysis of the performance of roller chain drive with a tensioner is presented. The model is based on the axially moving material model first given by Mote, but includes extensions that allow consideration of the effects of polygonal action, impact, and the periodic span length changes. Three equations of motion are obtained — one for the tensioner and one for each of the chain spans. The motion of the tensioner interacts with the motions of the chain spans through the chain tension, the contact angles, and the transverse displacement changes of the contact points. The effects of the periodic length change, tensioner stiffness, tensioner damping, tensioner position and external periodic load are investigated. Some of the results are compared to those obtained for a comparable chain drive without a tensioner. Solutions are obtained by a finite difference method.

Abstract:
Abstract A generally applicable, computer-aided procedure has been developed for the dynamic analysis of roller chain drives. This approach addresses important factors of chain dynamic behavior such as impact, discontinuities in span length, chain elasticity, coupling between longitudinal and transverse motions, as well as coupling between motion and boundary conditions. The procedure has been used to study various chain configurations. The results show good agreement with experimental observations and indicate some general trends, which provide additional insight into the dynamic behavior of these systems.

Abstract:
Abstract An extensive analysis of the contact phenomenon occuring between a roller chain and sprocket was given by Binder in 1956. Naji and Marshek complemented Binder’s work by presenting a theoretical and experimental investigation of the contact phenomenon under quasi-static conditions during the early 1980’s. The problem is very complex, and significantly complicated due to the non-trivial geometry of the sprocket tooth, manufacturing tolerances, and changes in clearances between components due to wear. Accordingly, several simplifying assumptions were necessary in the previous investigations. In this paper, a more detailed model of the quasi-static contact phenomenon is developed from first principles. The new model includes the external loading conditions, the curvature difference between the roller and the seating curve, the net error in the chain pitch (defined as the error in the chain pitch minus the error in the sprocket pitch), and Coulomb friction between the tooth and roller, the roller and bushing, and the bushing and pin. No assumption regarding the pressure angle at each contact point is made — rather the pressure angle at each contact point is calculated during the solution. (This is a very significant difference between the present and previous analyses). An efficient strategy for the computation is outlined. In a companion paper (“Mechanics of Roller Chain - Sprocket Contact: Observations About the Contact Phenomenon and Load Distribution” submitted for presentation at this conference), results generated by the new model are presented and discussed. A comparison with experimental data taken from the literature (Naji and Marshek, 1983) indicates that excellent quantitative prediction of load distribution is possible. Finally, practical observations about chain performance (including effects of manufacturing tolerance and wear, and guidelines for incorporation of idler sprockets) are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The analysis of the available calculation methods of chain-drives load-carrying ability is given according to the criterion of the tolerance unit pressure in a single profile chain joint [p]0. It is shown, that the values of [p]0 were determined according to the deterministic ideas without consideration of the distribution law of both random varieties of contact step of inner and outer rings and lengths of drive strands of the first and second profile of the chain drive. Probability task of determination of the tolerance unit pressure in two profile chain joints [p0]q is solved, when the structural, technological and physical-mechanical characteristic of the chain, that is, the lengths of drive strand of a chain-drive, accuracy of contact steps and stiffness of a drive roller chain are considered. The measurement procedure and the empirical dependencies for determination of drive roller chains deformation and stiffness are presented. As a result, the dependencies for the determination of [p0]q as the basic criterion according to which selection of a chain dimension-type, as well as characteristics used for the comparative estimation of a drive chain quality of different manufacturers when certain probability estimations are taken into consideration, were obtained.

Abstract:
The goal of this working paper is to identify the core challenges that have contributed to the poor performance of Ethiopia’s rice sector, and highlight approaches to successfully promote the commercialisation of the rice value chain. The authors achieve this by emphasising the underlying political economy dynamics of the rice value chain in Ethiopia, and how these can offer a better understanding of the drivers and constraints of agricultural commercialisation in the country. The paper also discusses the performance of, and challenges faced by, actors involved in the rice value chain. In addition, it looks at the role of development partners in promoting the rice value chain, the role of rice in the rural labour market, as well as the impact of COVID-19 on the various actors.
