Purpose: Compare the efficacy of Self-Myofascial Release with foam roller with Passive Recovery in reducing fatigue and muscle pain after simulating a basketball game in female federated athletes. Methods: Ten female basketball athletes belonging to the sub-19 and senior level, with an average age of 19,70±2,54 years, were submitted to two sessions of exercise and recovery performed with 72 hours of interval. The exercise protocol for simulating a basketball game was the Basketball Exercise Simulation Test (BEST). The type of recovery was different in each session, determined randomly. The athletes performed a 15-minute Passive Recovery or with the Foam Roller. Heart Rate (HR), Perceived Exertion through the Borg Scale, Muscular Pain through the Numerical Pain Scale and Blood Lactate Concentration were evaluated before BEST, 1 minute after BEST and 1 minute after recovery in both sessions. Results: Significant differences were observed after BEST and after recovery in all variables in both types of recovery. The exception was the Lactate Concentration that increased significantly after the BEST and decreased significantly after recovery with foam roller. Comparing the differences obtained after BEST, in both types of recovery, there were no significant differences in the Borg Scale, Muscular Pain and Lactate Concentration. However, after recovery the differences between the Borg Scale and Muscular Pain variables are significant between the two types of recovery. Conclusion: The smallest Perceived Exertion, Muscular Pain and Lactate Concentration indicate that the foam roller recovery may be more effective in relation to passive recovery.

This dissertation is organized in two articles: a theoretical article and an empirical article. The theoretical article focus on the phenomenon of somatization and the importance of the maternal role in establishing the preconscious of the individual and his capacity of symbolization and trauma development, reflecting onthe connection among the recurrent somatic disorders. Its theoretical reference is theFrench School of Psychosomatics, emphasizing Pierre Marty’s approach and some of hisprincipal concepts. The empirical article focuses on women life stories who have recurrent somatics complaints. It is a qualitative exploratory research with multiple casestudies that aims to understand the participants perspective in relation to their life stories and somatic symptomatology. Its theoretical reference is the French School of Psychosomatics, emphasizing Pierre Marty’s approach, also discussing the issues of parental bonding and narrativity. The Mini Mental Test, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale – TAS 26, the Parental Bonding Instrument and the Life Stories Interviews are used to develop the researchinvestigation. The results found point to the similarities in the parental bonds, responsibilities overload, trauma experience, grief and impoverished speech. One of the participants, despite have responded to the selection criteria, revealed histrionic traits, waving to the possibility of a conversive crisis or a themporary psychosomatic disorganization which ultimately enrich the questions around the issue, including the possibilities of misunderstanding thecomprehension of the symptoms.

Full textBackground: Organ donation and transplantation has made it possible to both save lives and also improve the quality of life for a large number of people. In recent years there has been a large gap between the need for organs and the availability of organ donors. Intensive care nurses have a responsibility to ensure that potential donors are identified and highlighted in the intensive care unit. Caring for a potential donor and meet relatives is a challenge and requires both knowledge and experience of intensive care nurses. Aim: To show how intensive care nurses perceive their expertise regarding the care of a donor and the hospitality of relatives during the donation process in the intensive care unit. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with ten intensive care nurses. Data were analyzed using a qualitative latent content analysis. Results: It was important that the intensive care nurses responded to both the donor and family members in a professional manner, but also responding to donors with dignity and respect and to be sensitive and show empathy towards their families. They experienced difficulties when the donor's wishes are not known, the treatment was time-consuming, getting families to understand their loved one has died. Some intensive care nurses brought up a point of view which could increase the numbers of donations. All intensive care nurses felt that they had enough knowledge to take care of a donor but being up to date and training is always needed. Debriefing or conversation was also something else that was raised which most felt was important not to bring work home. Conclusion: The study identified deficiencies in the donation care but with more training and guidelines this could be improved. The study has also contributed to greater understanding and knowledge surrounding the donation process in intensive care unit. This is which the authors believed to be useful in their future profession as intensive care nurses, but also the results of the study can be useful to other intensive care unit in Sweden.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the heat resistance property of a water-film-covered steel roller door by means of a fire test in a standard large scale 3m × 3m door/wall refractory furnace. Based on the CNS 14803 standard, a 3m × 3m specimen was constructed and was sprayed by water mist nozzles to form a water film on the specimen. The water film could absorb a great amount of heat because of the high specific heat and latent heat of water, and thus enhanced the heat resistant performance of the steel roller door. It has been shown that the vertical distance and horizontal distance of the nozzles to the roller door influenced the water film integrity. By carefully adjusting these distances and the pressure of the water pump, a complete coverage of the water film on the roller door could be achieved. The fire test in the large scale door/wall refractory furnace then followed. The fire test results showed that the temperature curve of the furnace basically conformed to the CNS 14803 heating curve; but in some time intervals, exceeded the latter. It was found that some of the temperature test points on the right-hand side of the roller door went over the CNS 14803 specified value. The reason was that the steel roller door, during the fire test, exhibited a certain degree of thermal deformation, which affected the integrity of water coverage. Furthermore, due to the thermal deformation, some sprayed water entered the roller box, creating temperature fluctuations. In contrast, the left-hand side of the roller door had full water coverage and the temperature maintained around 100o C. The fire test confirmed that if the roller door has a full water film coverage, the surface temperature can be controlled to fulfill the requirements of the CNS 14803 standard. Furthermore, if the strength of the connecting parts of the steel roller door are improved to reduce thermal deformation, the present method of enhancing the heat resistant property by applying a water film on the steel roller door is feasible.

This study used the two-dimensional finite element analysis (2-D FEA) software Maxwell 2D to analyze the electromagnetic field and performance characteristics of an elevator-door-roller motor. The primary purpose of this study was to reduce the cogging torque. These cogging torque reducing methods are discussed in this study. These methods included the fractional-slot winding, optimal pole arc coefficient, permanent magnet arc suppression, stator chute, skew rotor pole, magnet pole shifting, magnet pole segment dislocation, dummy slot and slot opening width. The secondary purpose was to improve the efficiency and reduce the torque ripple of the motor. The multi-objective optimization analysis was conducted after the three design objectives have met the needs of the manufacturers. First, this study determined the design objectives and the number of design factors. The design factors that have a higher degree of impact on the design objectives were obtained through the regression analysis by R language. The suitable orthogonal array was selected. Then the correlation degree was defined between -1 to +1 by the extension theory. The multi-objective optimization design parameters were derived by applying the concepts of the extension theory and the mean value analysis of Taguchi method. Finally, the 2-D FEA was applied to analyze the prototype and optimal structures, and verify whether they meet the design specifications.

The purpose of technology development is not only to enhance quality but also to create high value for human life. Technical functions are highly valued in the operation of modern technology, at the same time, safety should also be considered. For example, electrical steel rolling doors has become a necessity in factories, warehouses and garages in terms of life safety and property protection. In recent years, the disordered motor function of electrical steel rolling doors has caused many financial losses or labor damages. The study therefore researches on the safety mechanics for the electrical steel rolling doors, including a down- rolling safety device and a up-rolling safety dive to provide protection in case the motor is out of order in rolling up and down. Moreover, a wire safety device is equipped on the pulley to ensure the cable smoothly moving on the track. The feasibility of the proposed system is also tested to provide more convenient and safe electrical steel rolling doors for industrial application.
Simões, Ana Cristina Moreira. "Behind the boardroom's door: the role and contributions of corporate boards." Doctoral thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/6280.
Full textScholars and practitioners widely accept that spectacular corporate failures and the misuse of managerial power significantly contributed to the rising prominence of the subject of corporate governance and the boards of directors. Triggered by shareholder activism and aiming to solve the governance failures, corporate governance reformists, embodying the shareholder primacy model, have attempted to unify corporate governance mechanisms and practices. Formal regulations and policies are necessary, but they are not enough to fully understand effective governance. Scholars recognise that reforms are contributing to increasing the gap between what firms expect boards of directors to do and what they are actually doing, instead of bridging the difference between board role expectations and actual board role reality and, consequently, affecting board performance. Before normalizing the boards of directors, it is needed to describe and before describing it is needed to observe them in action. So far, academicians have not been able to empirically confirm that boardroom reforms will lead to more effective boards and ultimately positively affect corporate performance. As social actors we all have biased views, as do boardroom members, thus it is necessary to analyse directors’ perceptions about their role in order to understand if they are aligned and acting accordingly. Ultimately, the research goal is to understand what is, in fact, directors’ role and contribution. Previous research has not thoroughly explored the gap between what companies expect from the boards’ tasks (boards’ role) and their contribution (what the boards actually do). Thus, this survey examines the role and contribution of boards through their own perception, bridging the gap between board role expectations and actual board role reality. In so doing the study sheds light on the board’s real contribution and, ultimately its contribution to board effectiveness. Through a survey-based method, the author requested that board members from Portuguese listed firms rate the Chairman, the Board, the Senior Independent Director and the CEO performance, through their own perceptions. The survey draws three key conclusions: first, there are, generally, many inconsistencies around the board role boundaries between the chairman and the CEO and, particularly, around their strategic involvement. Second, tensions arise from the way this relationship evolves affecting both teams (the executive and non-executive directors) and third, there is an absence of a clear picture of the board’s role regarding its strategic involvement. This study, whilst exploring and understanding directors and their interactions inside the boardroom in a non-Anglo-American context, contributes to opening the ‘black-box’ of board dynamics, thus ‘dismantling the fortress’ in boards of directors studies. Additionally, whilst entailing ‘what is’ knowledge about the role and contribution of the corporate apex decision-making group, the study leads to the overarching and painful (but absolutely needed) reflection about the pivotal boards’ role as shapers of the ever changing business society relationship.
