SummaryHuman activities are altering ecosystems and threatening the well-being of wildlife. The study of the stressful effects of human disturbances on animal distribution, physiology and behaviour can provide fundamental insights for wildlife conservation. Many animals react to danger by producing chemical cues that can be smelled by others, which is called the smell of fear. Some bird species produce chemical compounds when threatened, such as nestlings of the Eurasian roller Coracias garrulus that vomit an odorous orange liquid when scared in their nests. Here, we experimentally explore the possibility that parents were informed about recent predation attempts at their nests through the olfaction of this vomit. The European Roller Coracias garrulus is a long-distance migrant experiencing a pronounced decline throughout its breeding range, which has been attributed to the degradation of open agricultural habitats. However, its conservation status in non-breeding areas in Africa remains unstudied. To do this, birds track the edge of the doldrums to take advantage of favorable winds and strong convection. SARS-CoV-2 binds erythrocyte band3 protein, which has a similar characteristic of ACE2, leading to alteration of erythrocyte physiology like oxygen transport with development of hypoxia. S

Abstract:
Cereals are an important source of energy and contain almost all substances necessary for the normal functioning of the human body, animals and birds. The anatomical structure of the grain has an outer shell that can be removed from the surface without destroying the starch core in many technological processes. One of the ways to improve the quality of the final product is to actively treat the surface of the wheat grain to remove the husks during its preparation for grinding. For this, peeling machines of various designs, shelling machines and machines with friction rotary knives are used. Th

Abstract Interferon alpha (IFNa) is recognized for its potential in cancer immunotherapy by activating immune responses against tumor cells. However, untargeted IFNa's application is limited by systemic toxicity and non-specific activity, affecting both tumor and healthy tissues and resulting in undesirable side effects. To overcome these challenges, we developed the novel trivalent bispecific antibody-cytokine fusion protein RO7694744 designed to provide a specific activation of IFNa on programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) positive cells, such as tumor cells and immune cells. Abstract Background The feeding behavior of bloodsucking insects determines the transmission, distribution, host spectrum and evolution of blood parasites in the wild. Conventional wisdom suggests that some vector groups (e.g. black flies, family Simuliidae) are consistently exophagous daytime biters. We aimed to understand more about the exceptions to this pattern by combining targeted trapping and molecular identification of parasites in vectors. Methods In this study, we collected black flies in nest boxes used by European rollers Coracias garrulus in southeastern Spain. We molecularly anal

AbstractMigratory organisms can be vectors of parasitic host organisms that can then be transported along seasonal migratory journeys and spread across continents. Ornithophilic nidicolous ticks (e.g. soft ticks) include species responsible for the transmission of pathogens and bacteria, thus representing a health problem not only for wild species that are directly parasitized, but also for those that share the same environments or reproductive sites with them. In this regard, artificial nests for birds may turn out to be site-sources of parasites. Here, we document the occurrence of different

Ascertaining the feeding behavior of vectors is a key for understanding epidemiology of the infections they transmit. For some host–vector–parasite systems, this information is biased towards human and peridomestic habitats, frequently underestimating the likely role of wildlife. In addition, studies on vector interactions often focus on a one‐to‐one host–vector relationship, even though it is crucial to analyze how multiple vector species interact with multiple hosts. These biases particularly affect our knowledge of sandflies, the main vector of Leishmania spp. and various phleboviruses, tha
