Abstract:
Using quantitative analysis, we analyzed the coverage of women indirectly involved in four major U.S. presidential scandals (Watergate, Iran-Contra, Clinton-Lewinsky affair, Ukraine quid pro quo) through 258 articles published in six magazines (The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, Time, The New Yorker, Newsweek, Rolling Stone) to assess how they are described by journalists. Three assumptions guided our analysis. First, women are covered in a negative way even if they are not responsible for the scandal. Second, they are covered by the magazines in a stereotypical way to describe their b

Reports in the lay press based on anecdotal evidence have resulted in a rush to judgment about the impact of in utero exposure to illicit drugs, particularly cocaine, on the health, behavior, and development of America's children.1 Children with a history of prenatal cocaine exposure, labeled "crack kids," are portrayed in the media as inevitably and permanently damaged. An article on Rolling Stone Magazine (October 18, 1990) stated that these babies are "like no others, brain damaged in ways yet unknown, oblivious to any affection." An article in the New York Times reported that "the parents

Abstract:
Many consider Patti Smith the godmother of punk. That label, however, is inaccurate. Although she possessed the energy and irreverence that would later mark the punk generation, she was inspired by the beatniks and by Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and many other figures whom the punk rockers were reacting against. Yet, she acted as a bridge between the two generations, finding common ground with both. The experimental and rebellious nature of her work made Smith and her band integral to the mid-'70s New York art rock scene, centered around the club CBGB on the Lower East Side. S
