Full textAppreciating the extent to which rumour as a phenomenon is embedded into the political processes of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as being pervasive in its wider society, is key to understanding, the country. Largely responsible for the emergence of the messianic type movements which appeared in colonial times, rumour is omnipresent in the press today. This has been particularly true since the 1991 National Sovereignty Conference. Beyond its everyday place in the social order, rumour is deeply rooted into the way in which the Congolese discuss and recount their stories, by yarning. Yarning, therefore not only underpins the poetry in rumour and drives local storytelling but has become essential in creative writing. Much of Congolese fiction draws on yarning, using it as a narrative of poetic literary device, giving rise to an “off the page” dimension. From this, a picture gradually builds up; surfacing initially with the messianisms then moving into the press and the “literature of the prophets” before finishing up at what is the heart of the matter in the Congolese “Rumour Novels”

Full textWhen the African countries were granted their independence in the sixties, the people of Africa had such dreams that they were indeed at the dawn of something new, since they had lived through such oppression, under the rule of those who had colonized them. The opposite, however, took place, because these new leaders who were put into place, saw themselves as monarchs with divine rights and distinguished themselves by all kinds of abuses, which sank these countries and their inhabitants into extreme suffering and tremendous decline never before experienced in history. Today, forty years after this compromised sovereignty, the people wonder about their future and continue their bitter fight against these ominous military regimes with the hopes of regaining their stolen freedom. In the realm of art, the romantic view of Sony Labou Tansi, beyond the globally somber report of actual conditions, is as well a testimony of a surge toward a new temporality, where hope is depicted on the horizon. This writing, then, describes a violence which obeys the argument between tyranny and emancipation; that is, a crossing of paths from which a happy society is born, with its sudden change of mentality. This new society, which is a foundational model, is a model on which one must build

Full textThe zairean literary works in french language owe their origin to the combined efforts of five principal factors : the introduction of french in the educational system of the belgian congo, the establishment of public libraries in the colony, the creation of socio-cultural circles with literary competition for the educated natives, the admission of blacks to press writings and finally, the alteration of the colonial literary works by the replacement of their approach to african realities. During the colonial period, the congolese narrative literature was marked by the works of paul lomami-tshibamba, one of the rare belgian congo writers to describe the awful change of the traditional african societies in contact with western civilisation. The extensive work of the traditional novelist exploits the relationship, established by the african mythology, between the visible world and the supernatural forces. Particularly inspired by the myth founders, inspired by the myth fonders, the authors magnified the greatness of traditional african civilisation with an effort to put its values in the modern world. Presently, the remarkable stride in the production of zairean literary works points in two directions : the intellectual writers who question the coming of the west into africa and the realist writers that challenge and condemn the bad management of public affaires by post-independent african leaders. Having attained maturity and autonomy in the mastery of writing, the zairean literary works now look forward to a nationwide spread. Their future is remarkably tied to that of francophony in africa

Full textThe main subject of the novels written by sony labou tansi and henri lopes is as in all fiction written since the end of colonialism in africa - the political community. The two congolese writers show the state of disorder and cruelty which predominates as long as morally undisciplined human beings refuse to live in respect of the law. For the description of such a state labou tansi and henri lopes invent characters who are totally unable to controll themselves and places where a war governs in which everybody is fighting everybody. The language is considered as one of the main aspects of these texts. Labou tansi creates neologisms and expressions ; his narrator is ceaselessly talking in a peremptory and prophetic manner. Henri lopes prefers to borrow its different modes of expression from the african continent. Both authors show narrators coming from just the social background they are discribing but their adressees are no others than strangers. Such a situation has certain consequences for the poetic coherence of the texts shown here

Full textNegro-african national litteratures are nowadays the object of a thorough study. Numerous works : master's degree and detailed studies diploma papers, doctoral thesis and essays attest brilliantly to this cultural reality. They rise up and restore the image of litteratures which have remained unrecognized for a long time. Those works are generally based on oral tradition and offer a poetic and esthetic vision of the world so far as they lay on the outstanding aspects of orality. The study we present here underlines the definite data of orality and its interferences qith novelistic works. Orality is implicity framed in literary written work the painting here presented has a wealth of literary resonances from the congo a french speaking country. But this painting glosses before all the deep deposits of the congolese novel even if we sometimes evoke other literary styles which are so stately and so significant
