Full textIn this study we exert ourselves to show the specificities of Negro-African French speaking post-independence novel and to stress the fact that these one take part in the drawing up of a aesthetic indeed plural aesthetics which belong to it. In this point of view, it is necessary to mention progressive and perpetual emancipation process of African novel towards European novel and the sketch of narrative identity enough original. The emancipation of Negro-African novel with regard to European novel means the Latino-American character that it take. Full textResearch on the translation of Nigerian literary texts written in English, and even other African texts, has demonstrated that the cultural specificity of the texts is often retained when they are translated into European languages in order to preserve their local colour. This thesis adds to the scholarship by examining the elements that surround the texts. It explores the paratexts (layouts, titles, cover images, blurbs, synopses and prefaces) of Nigerian novels written in English and translated into French from 1953 to 2013 to determine how the novels are presented to the target audience, in other words, how the French audience is envisaged to receive the works. The hypothesis of the thesis is that the images of Nigeria influenced the presentation and promotion of the novels.The framework of descriptive translation studies was applied. Different perceptions of Nigeria were defined. Afterwards, the paratexts of the source and target novels were extracted and compared in order to find recurrent patterns in the target paratexts and to establish if there were references to Nigerian images in the paratexts.The findings of the research revealed that, like the translation of Nigerian (African) works in which the cultural specificity is preserved in the target texts, the cultural specificity of the works is also retained in the target-text paratexts, and it indicates that the novels are construed as narrative documentation of Nigerian culture and values. The works are marketed for their exoticism, which is emphasised in the paratexts. Furthermore, the images of Nigeria in France did not only shape the construal and marketing of the novels but also played a role in the selection of the works for translation.The presentation and promotion of these novels as documentation of Nigerian culture and values reinforce the negative images of Nigeria. It downplays the aesthetic qualities of the novels and can prevent a reader from engaging with Nigerian works from a different standpoint

Full textThis thesis analyzes the different representations of failure in some Sub-Saharan French novels written between 1961 and 2000. Rereading L’aventure ambiguë of Cheikh Hamidou Kane, Les Soleils des indépendances and Allah n’est pas obligé of Ahmadou Kourouma, Trop de soleil tue l’amour of Mongo Beti, Murambi, le livre des ossements of Boubacar Boris Diop and La Folie et la Mort of Ken Bugul, it shows, through the characters and their disappointing paths, that failure is a recurrent theme of that period. The various speeches that the personel of the novels holds about failure reveals that the perception of this phenomenon is relative, because what is a failure for some, it is not failure for others : while some characters dismiss the various abuses of warrior, traditional and political power, as well as the deviant behavior of other members of society, others find ways to legitimize and rationalize the evil. Rather than being limited to the simple matter of observation of failure in the novels, the thesis goes beyond and proposes a new hermeneutic of francophone fictions of Africa : it brings out what in the interstices of the novels – and from the novelists – allows to deconstruct and overcome the imaginary of failure. Thus, novelists use certain rhetorical processes such as humor, irony, the play of words, the narrative polyphony to escape the grip of failure. They show that instead of indulging in the “sob of the black man”, the postcolonial subject should re-evaluate his attachment to traditions, make an epistemological break and a cultural adjustment, rely on art as a cathartic means, and act to establish a true democracy. In the end, the thesis is against an Afropessimistic reading of Sub-Saharan francophone novels and invites to consider them as a means that would enable Africans to invent a new rationality, a new way of defining oneself in the face of the world ; in short, a way to hope for a better tomorrow.

Full textThe object of our dissertation has been a study of some african novels in the light of european existential philosophy. Our point of departure was that de six novels in question - l'aventure ambigue, la plaie, chaine, l'ecart, un piege sans fin, and le regard du roi - apprehend human reality in africa from an essentially metaphysical or existen- tial view point. To this effect, they lend themselves to a fruitful philosophical analysis capable of shedding new light on the human or metaphysical problems they explore. Existential philosophy together with its various models of analysis served as the theoretical and methodological frame- work of our study. As the essence of philosophical criticism of literary texts should be the union of literary analysis with philosophical reflexion, our study has been divided into two phases. The first phase is concerned with a phenomenological stu- dy of the forms and structures of the novels aimed at uncovering the existential mouvements and themes of which the said forms and structures are the embodiments. The second phase takes up the themes and mouvements so uncovered in order to submit them to a tho- rough and systematic philosophical analysis. Thus in keeping with an existential approach, in the first instance the adventure of the hero of each novel is viewed and analysed as the dialectics of the individual's freedom as it comes to grips with various si- tuations. In the second instance, other human and historical pro- blems raised by some of these texts are submitted to a sypnotic philosophical scrutiny. Finally, as each of these novels is infor- med by a certain point of view of its author on african human and historical reality, our study ends with a critical evaluation of each author's african thoughts as portrayed in his nove
