Abstract:
Not only do road systems serve dominance claims, but they also occupy a vital place as a power instrument. Road systems, made use of, at war, through transportation of army, are also an indispensable instrument for trade network as well as taking the existence of state back of the beyond. In this context, Roman Empire, while generating one of the most important elements for humankind, was able to take its influence, through these road nets constituted by bridges and milestone, to the lands dominated. Courier service has great importance for the rendering of power. In Roman period, the main road, from Belgrade via Edirne (Adrianople) to Istanbul strait, had been extending to Izmit (Nikomedia), passing to Anatolia side. Thus, Izmit that, until the establishment of Istanbul (Constantinapole), was the center of Roman Empire in Asia Minor had rendered a service as a first distribution point of Anatolian road system. From there, routes, leading to Black Sea (Phontus) coasts, were covering a distance to the territorial enclaves of Anatolia. Hence, the main road, extending from İzmit to Anatolia, was leading to Iznik (Nikaea) and from there via Osmaneli (Lefke) was bifurcating through Ankara (Ancyra) and Eskişehir (Dorylaion). Milestones, bridges and roads fitted with stones, still existent, have the evidences for this road nets. Sakarya River (Sangarios) was one of the obstacles in the proceeding of the road net reaching to Lefke surroundings. It was extremely hard to cross this ferocious river described as a hell by traveler Ibn Battuta. Romans had built enormous bridges to cross this obstacle dominating the main road. Even though none of these bridges reached today, their remnants have certain clues. The bridge, to which we refer, is located close to Selçik Village encountered at 3 kilometers far from and northwest of Osmaneli province. This bridge, following the milestones, is one of the most important points of main road extending to Anatolia. In this context we have determined another bridge remnant in the same place through our field research. This ultimate bridge, constructed by six arches, three of which is under the water, was devastated by this river. In this study, this bridge, having no records in literature, will be dealt with the road net surrounding it, and the remnants of this road net penetrating into Anatolia will, also, be examined. Keywords: Sangarius, The Pilgrim’s Road, Roman Bridges, Lefke, Roman and Byzantine Roads

Abstract:

The bridge of Canosa di Puglia (Italy) was originally built in the 2nd century CE to cross the Ofanto river along the Via Traiana, the route built at the behest of Emperor Trajan that connected Rome with the port of Brindisi, on the Adriatic Sea. Restorations, collapses and architectural transformations have deeply altered its original structure over the centuries, making it lose the traces of a monumental central arch. Archival and field research, conducted through various surveys, has produced new data that has provided an update of the bridge's history. The aim of this dissertation is to show the results of a research conducted with a new methodological approach to the monument, applying ancient metrology to the interpretation of its architectural evolution. This method has proven to be indispensable to formulate hypotheses about the original configuration of the bridge, whose central arch would result to be one of the widest among the bridges of the Roman architecture.

Abstract:
UDK: 624.21:7.033.39 (497.6) This work primarily aims to capture and analyze selected new bridge stone structures in the image of the cultural landscape, which occurred in the Ottoman period in the territory of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina, These bridge structures, regardless of whether they were located directly or connecting routes to the said Roman route, as well as functional - structural miniature sizes or stylish - the aesthetic imbalance have the role specified to fill that void in Bosnia and Herzegovina which is felt in the knowledge of development of those types of buildings. An analysis of the historical development of bridges leads us in history where we can clearly recognize, on what is based, the maximum utilitarianism bridges in general. Through presented examples we confirm the universality of the object that without certain stylistic affiliation, which were built by hands and knowledge of local builders, however, do not disturb the landscape, but on the contrary, they complement each other, and create a special harmony of space.

Abstract:
For a reader of medieval narratives the literary of the scenery, is in the first place an imaginary experience introduced by the act of reading and only subsequently it serves the role of an instrument necessary to reconstruct the image. In the present study, I discuss and reflect upon the natural and architectural elements of description and also the visions of the scenery recurrent in the medieval novel. The medieval language is extremely efficient in its descriptions of subject. The stereotypes are ever present, though punctuated by beautiful, short, yet vivid, descriptions of castles and cities. The elements of the landscape at times form a coherent panoramic setting for the action. Brief descriptions and mentions of the elements of the scenery, both natural and urban, appear as they are called for by the narrative. Such short indications appear to best show the reality of the castles or cities of XII and XIII century

Abstract:
This papers purpose is to compare the female protagonist as a subject and reader in Madame Bovary, Watermelon and Bridget Jones´s diary. The aim is feministic, where Judith Butler’s concepts of subjectivity and performativity have been used besides the method of close reading. These novels are pioneering works of each genre; the realistic novel and chick lit. Emma Bovary loses her subjectivity and turns in to a passive object when she is desired and looked at by men. Instead dead objects gets animated, which produces an extremely objectifying portrait of Emma. This culminates with the depiction of her suicide. Surprisingly Emma’s position as a subject, if she ever has one, appears through her reading. The performativity of the texts gives her power and agency to try to change her life within the limits of the bourgeoisie marriage. The protagonists of Watermelon and Bridget Jones´s diary are two female subjects in a modern society, who loves reading. Despite their different opportunities to live fulfilling lives, as compared to Emma, they tend to objectify themselves in relationship to men. They also emphasize the importance of love and having a man in their life, which is according to the genre. Interpreted through Butler, an explanation could be that the power of submission not only sets the outer limits, it also influences our internal desires. These chick lit-novels also discuss literature and cultural hierarchy, where the protagonists tend to prefer popular literature. Watermelon also contains an opening for subversion, depicted by Claire’s achieved independency at the end of the novel, and through some gender-parodies. Most of all, these two chick lit-novels tend to reiterate and consolidate a traditional gender-order through their performativity, although ironizing over the same. Keywords: Reading, genre, realistic novel, chick lit, feminism, Judith Butler, subjectivity, performativity, Madame Bovary, Watermelon, Bridget Jones´s diary.

Abstract:
Tiber Island, between Vrbs and Trastevere, is one of the topographical characteristic of the site ofRome. Its history and fame begun with the arrival of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine brought fromEpidauros. No study went thoroughly back over the history and topography of this significant component ofroman scenery since the monograph written by M. Besnier in the early years of the 20th century. Nowadayscurrent developments in archeological research and new perspectives in roman topography throw new light onmany issues. This thesis aims to go back over the development, the town-planning but also the place the Tiberislet occupied in town. In this perspective, this is not just about grasping the island as a place but also as acomponent of roman landscape and urban development. Indeed Tiber island can only be apprehended at firstwithin its natural surroundings then its urban one. The island shows a high concentration of cults, which begunwith the advent of Aesculapius, who made it the “sacred island” thus permanently marking its topography. However, studying its planning and administration reveals it was real district too, with all the features as regardsarrangements and activities. At first on the fringe of the city, its integration to the city begun in the 2nd centuryBC until it was established as uicus Censori by the augustean reform. During the Imperial period, the island isalready seen as an old-settled part of the city, which will only know new changes with the banning ofpolytheistic cult
Parole chiavi

Abstract:
This thesis explores modalities in two hagiographical collections from the late Middle Ages; the Legenda Aurea and the Gilte Legende by drawing inspiration from post-colonial hybridity theories.. It conducts a close textual analysis by studying the use of pronouns in five saints’ legends where female saints transcend traditional gender identities and become men, and focuses on how they transcend, live as men, and die. The study concludes that the use of pronouns is fluid in the Latin Legenda Aurea, while the Middle English Gilte Legende has more female pronouns and additions to the texts where the female identity of the saints is emphasised. This is interpreted as a sign of the feminisation of religious language in Europe during the late Middle Ages, and viewed parallel with the increase of holy women at that time. By doing this, it underlines the importance of new words and concepts when describing and understanding medieval views on gender.

Abstract:
Basing on the accounts of Thucydides and Plutarch, the paper analyses the way Sicily and the proposed Athenian expedition to Sicily, as a strategic bridge to advance over Carthage, define Nicias and Alcibiades, and what they represent: old Athens, comprised of experienced rulers and devoted, thoughtful citizens, who retreat, aware of the madness and threat of disaster that will lead to the ruinous outcome of the civil war. Forced to join the expedition, Nicias, as the embodiment of this polis, will stay until the end, in a campaign with which he does not agree, trying to save his fellow citizens. Alcibiades together with what he represents are fighting fiercely for the realisation of a megalomaniacal dream that will bring fortune and power for their own advantage. While Nicias accepts the command out of duty and imitation, Alcibiades yearns for it. In this background, Sicily and Carthage, waving from afar with their wealth and promise of power, constitute the stimulus for action that ultimately destroys an Athens close to defeat. On the other hand, in the young Roman republic, Sicily and Carthage offer natural encouragement of the conquest and submission of their power, as an imperative of the logic of expansion, affirmation and survival of Rome as a nascent power. It is the generation of the old Roman nobility that claims Carthago delenda est.

Abstract:

Concrete engineers and researchers have been developed durable reinforce concrete technologies for long time. However, we have not reached the goal which gives us a perfect technology against deterioration of reinforced concrete. Basically concrete itself is high durable material. And we recognize this fact when we see Roman concrete structures are still working now. The technologies described in this paper are the challenge to derive the solution against deterioration of reinforced concrete. This research and development has been taking for about 30 years. Then a non-metallic highway bridge is under design and will be built in 2020 with the key technologies of aramid fiber tendons, fiber reinforced concrete and butterfly web.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to present some historical bridges that explain the importance of these works of art in terms of culture, as part of a broader context of landscape and meaning. They are pedestrian bridges that cross through places and time, each of which expresses its own genius loci through the history and events that have involved them. The bridge, in fact, should not be considered as simply an object characterized by its own formal image, the result of consolidated construction technology; instead, it becomes part of the very context in which it stands when it embraces the meaning, history and tangible and intangible components of the place. This is why the paper will describe various footbridges that in different ways each express a strong tie with the history and the meaning of their location and the surrounding landscape. From the Pont du Gard, the ancient Roman aqueduct included on the World Heritage List, now able to be crossed at the various levels and part of a huge UNESCO-protected nature and archaeological park, to the Mediaeval bridges of the devil, the symbols and legend of the location in which they stand; or indeed the Mostar Bridge, representing the rejoining of the banks after destruction at war; the Istanbul aqueducts, offering the opportunity of requalifying the place and giving rise to new landscape offerings; or finally, the Venice Calatrava Bridge, an emblematic example of the contrast of the old and the new, expressing the conflict that can be generated by the inclusion of a new architecture into a historic context bursting with meanings.

Abstract:
The Mediterranean Sea can be taken as a good example of the advantage of people transportation by water, in order to reduce pollution. This is mainly due to historical reasons, in fact the ashore private transportation along coasts of Italy, France, Spain, Slovenia, Croazia etc, has been developed during centuries on the basis of Roman Empire roads, and furtherly with development of railways, offering basically 2 different ways of transport. But recent solutions and studies shows the possibility to give a significant contribution to the reduction of emissions by the use of appropriate vessels. In fact, the present generation of propulsion system in marine application, and the developments of hybrid propulsion, with new technologies for batteries, makes possible to build a vessel with a significant reduction of pollution. The author, after studying also, as a benchmark, the transportation used on main Italian Lakes, and using his experience with other vessel, also hydrofoil and fast vessels, consider a case study of transportation applied to Ligurian an Tirrenic sea, by the use of a fleet of fast vessels, capable to carry 350-400 passengers at an average speed of 22-24 knot, comparing the fuel consumption and the cost of each vessel with the average capability and price of a train and comparing the fuel consumptions of the vessels with the total amount of fuel used by the amount of private cars used to move the same amount of people. The study takes in consideration also the average sea condition, to demonstrate that especially in the area considered, a similar service can guarantee a long-term usage. The result of the study shows how is possible to adopt a significant benefit for the environment, due the possibility now offered to use e-fuels, or green fuels, to reduce the ashore facilities, no need of bridges, tunnels, road etc.

Abstract:
The article deals with the burial of a destrier discovered at the Eastern necropolis of Phanagoria in 2017. A saddle-horse, an approximately eight years old stallion was buried by the ancient road connecting the capital of the Asian Bosporos with the city of Kepoi. The burial was made in a separate grave. It contained a full set of horse-harness not properly fixed upon the corpse but arranged nearby. The ammunition intended for the body was placed by the animal’s belly. By its head there was the main piece of the horse-harness – the decorated bridle with wheel-shaped cheek-pieces. Among its elements there were bits, a pair of open-work cheek-pieces, mobile clamps of the bridle, a set of a buckle and a belt-tip, stone and bronze pendants, two pairs of different type pendants, silver plaques and round applications of yellow metal. The most prominent component of the set are silver open-work cheek-pieces executed in the Sarmatian style. Their delicate tamga-shaped ornament finding parallels among the pieces of horse-harness and military ammunition from Roman provinces. Similar objects are found also in nomadic warrior burials, and could be explained by their owners’ services on behalf of the Bosporan kingdom. The chronology of the burial can be defined within the limits of the late 2nd century – the first third of the 3rd century. The rites of the deliberate damage of the bridle can be traced, which is connected with the sacrificial character of the horse burial. The sacrifice could be a part of the burial ceremony of a noble mounted warrior. The horse was still alive when it was placed into the pit and then killed in the grave. The horse belonged to some prominent mounted warrior, the member of the city military elite. The Late Roman set of horse-harness testifies to the use of Bosporan cavalry ammunition similar to the Sarmatian one. The decorative features of the bridle from Phanagoria demonstrates the ties of the city’s defenders with the equestrian traditions of the Roman Empire and its barbarian surrounding.

Abstract:
Abstract Operational Excellence is paramount in oil & gas industries. Various efforts were made to achieve incident free while promoting efficient operation. However, in massive operation activities, the challenges become even greater because of the Short of Service Employee (SSE). The aggressive in increasing number of Rigs creates a high number of newcomers with limited skill, competence, and experience. Nevertheless, dynamics challenge operations are not an excuse to fail. Operation must be run safely for business continuity. Appropriate solutions are figured out to bridge the condition and applying Knowledge Management (KM) is one of them. Drilling & Completion Rokan believes that learning culture is a strong foundation in achieving the vision and mission of the organization. The learning process has been carried out from the management level to the Business Partner's frontliners under learning group called D&C Learning Club - DCLC. Information and knowledge sharing is always delivered face-to-face or via online meetings. Digital technology such as social media has proven to be practical, easy to do and accelerates the learning process. However, this application has limitations for use in very massive and complex environments. Therefore, D&C Rokan has developed a KM platform that is more robust and provides better value. The development research begins with the mapping process for the required knowledge. This mapping is scoped on Drilling operation and Engineering support. Then SWOT and TOWS analyzes were carried out to support the decision-making process in selecting applications for the KM platform. Decisively, team decided to choose "SharePoint" application because of its superiority in security, infrastructure availability, memory capacity and ability to provide an environment for community interaction, transforming knowledge based on a knowledge creation model, known as SECI - Socialization, Externalization, Combination, and Internalization. The KM application, which is called KM&L, consists of 3 main parts: discussion platform, digital library, and learning calendar. The learning community remains a major factor in the success of achieving a learning culture. Activeness in questions and answers, discussion to find solutions, challenging each other and involving Subject Matter Experts (SME) will accelerate the process of creating knowledge, which is documented in a digital library. KM&L is expected to become One Stop Shop Learning. The expectation is not only to accelerate the learning curve for SSE, but also to retain knowledge for communities. These will eventually become one of the competitive advantages for D&C Rokan in achieving operational excellence: incident free operation and world class reliability & efficiency.
