Abstract:
In Alexander Ross’s Mel Heliconium (1642) and Pansebeia (1653), the ancient gods and the stories surrounding them are the product of the greatly successful civil theology of the Roman Empire. Ross’s first mythography was written to intervene, on the royalist and Laudian side, in the political and religious conflicts of the Civil Wars. In such times, the virtuous Romans and their use of religion could provide a positive example for governing England. Ross’s portrayal of Roman religion dissociates it from the disreputable beginnings of paganism and emphasizes its monotheism, rationality, moral superiority, and charity. In their undisputed political wisdom, ideal princes of the Roman Empire championed religion because they knew that this would stabilize their reign and keep people in order through the fear of God. Ross’s mythographical work attempts to re-create the ancient function of the fables, by using them to restore the people’s fear of God and king.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The promotion of conciliarist ideas in the reign of James I created a space for both liberal Arminian and conservative Laudian ideas to shape the Church of England’s self-identity under regal patronage, whilst largely excluding the influence of both Puritans and Roman Catholics. The Restoration Church after 1660 inherited these conciliarist ideas, while the conservative heirs of Laud emerged as the High Church party, a party which continued to articulate its ecclesiological vision into the eighteenth century and beyond, most notably in the writings of Henry Dodwell, George Bull, George Hickes, and William Law. However, conservative conciliarism failed to survive the demise of the ancient regime, and this can be seen in the affinity of some of the Tractarians with French ultramontanists.

Abstract:

Abstract:
What follows is an exploration of an ongoing project by the coauthors of this chapter. We are in our third year of coteaching a course in Bible/theology for Waterloo Lutheran Seminary at Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada). In the past we have cotaught Psalms and Romans, with Daniel and Allen bringing, respectively, Jewish and (Lutheran) Christian insights to the task of reading these texts. The present chapter attends to the earlier experiences and draws heavily upon our most recent experience, which involved teaching Exodus together. We explore the insights gained by each of us in these rich experiences of teaching interreligiously.

Arias, Enrique Desmond, and Thomas Grisaffi, eds. Cocaine. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478021957.

Abstract:
The contributors to Cocaine analyze the contemporary production, transit, and consumption of cocaine throughout the Americas and the illicit economy's entanglement with local communities. Based on in-depth interviews and archival research, these essays examine how government agents, acting both within and outside the law, and criminal actors seek to manage the flow of illicit drugs to both maintain order and earn profits. Whether discussing the moral economy of coca cultivation in Bolivia, criminal organizations and drug traffickers in Mexico, or the routes cocaine takes as it travels into and through Guatemala, the contributors demonstrate how entire ways of life are built around cocaine commodification. They consider how the authority of state actors is coupled with the self-regulating practices of drug producers, traffickers, and dealers, complicating notions of governance and of the relationships between economic and moral economies. The collection also outlines a more progressive drug policy that acknowledges the important role drugs play in the lives of those at the urban and rural margins. Contributors. Abstract:
In German politics, elections occur constantly. When voters are not being called upon to elect a new Bundestag, the next election at federal state level is just around the corner. Despite some commonalities, each federal state parliament is elected within a different legal framework. In both the public’s perception and electoral studies, however, those differences are not always duly taken into account. Therefore, this volume describes the electoral laws of the states in 16 specific chapters following a short introduction on their theoretical and historical foundations as well as on the requirements of the federal constitution. It provides a reliable basis for comparing the German electoral systems with one another. The electoral laws of the states do not appear as mere imitations of the federal system, but as autonomous legislative entities with their own structural decisions and emphases. The volume deals, in particular, with controversial reform projects, such as the reduction of the voting age and so-called affirmative action Legislation. Abstract:
This handbook aims to provide an overview of knowledge about age and ageing in ‘Western’ societies at the beginning of the 21st century, which is intended to be equally suitable for research and practice. It focuses on relevant contributions from the social and behavioural sciences and their access to selected aspects of age and ageing. Its main topics can be described as quintessential core subjects, e.g. theories of ageing, socio-economic situation and inequalities, mental and physical health, social networks and social participation. These are supplemented by contributions on often marginalised topics and ‘emerging topics’ such as very old age, experiences of violence and delinquency, sexuality, and the spirituality and ethics of ageing. Finally, a series of topics relevant to everyday life and research practice (e.g. age and technology and data collection among the elderly) form a third central component of the book.
