The article analyses the content of the strategies used by leading Polish politicians for the revival of Polish statehood. Those strategies were adjusted by leading Polish politicians in accordance with major shifts in international relations on the eve and during World War I. Artykuł dotyczy aspektów dyplomatycznej oraz organizacyjnej działalności – zarówno w wymiarze formalnym, jak i zakulisowym – Romana Dmowskiego, współtwórcy Narodowej Demokracji i nowoczesnej myśli nacjonalistycznej. Dmowski, stojący na czele Komitetu Narodowego Polskiego, był oficjalnym przedstawicielem rządu polskiego podczas konferencji pokojowej w Paryżu w latach 1919–1920, która ustalała europejski ład po zakończeniu I wojny światowej. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono krótki rys biograficzny głównego bohatera oraz sytuację geopolityczną schyłku 1918 roku widzianą z perspektywy członków Komitetu Narodowego Polskiego. Zasadniczy prze‑kaz koncentruje się na działalności Dmowskiego od rozpoczęcia konferencji paryskiej (18 stycznia 1919 roku) aż po dzień podpisania przez delegację pol‑ską dokumentu przywracającego formalnie państwo polskie na mapę Europy (28 czerwca 1919 roku). Abstract:
Artykuł jest poświęcony zrodzonej na początku XX wieku koncepcji walki o niepodległość Polski, której reprezentantem był Roman Dmowski. Kierowana przez niego Liga Narodowa stawiała sobie za cel przywrócenie polskiej państwowości i próbowała kreować wizję funkcjonowania niepodległej Polski. Podczas I wojny światowej organizacja opowiedziała się po stronie Rosji i państw Ententy. W 1919 roku podczas konferencji pokojowej w Paryżu, kończącej I wojnę światową, kierowany przez Dmowskiego Komitet Na‑rodowy Polski był oficjalnym reprezentantem interesów odradzającego się państwa polskiego. Dmowski precyzyjnie opisywał wówczas, jak powinny przebiegać jego zdaniem granice Polski. Nie udało mu się jednak rozwiązać kwestii związanej z funkcjonowaniem Prus Wschodnich. Wtedy też trafnie przewidział, że rozdzielone od siebie dwie części państwa niemieckiego będą ciążyć ku sobie, co w konsekwencji przyniesie kolejną wojnę.

Abstract:
This chapter views the great attention Polish society devoted to the Jewish question, as well as its hostility towards Jews, as making the stance which the Endecja (Partia Narodowa-Democracja, or National Democratic Party) adopted to some degree inevitable. Virtually from its beginnings, the antisemitic camp urged the strengthening of the Polish national element in all spheres of social life. Its primary founder, Roman Dmowski, stressed in his 1893 book Nasz patriotyzm (Our Patriotism) the need to increase nationalist sentiment daily. This nationalist approach also wanted to strengthen the Polish middle classes in the cities and towns, and correspondingly limit the Jewish hold on this sector, at least in the territories of the Russian and Austrian partitions. Despite the fact that when the Endecja called for a boycott on Jewish trade and artisanry they did not likewise call for greater support for Polish trade and crafts, their programme for the nationalization of economic life increased the gulf between Poles and Jews and added a new context to the traditional distances. In addition, within many urban centres in Russian and Austrian Poland, fierce economic competition between the established and newly emerging merchant classes accompanied the mutual cultural isolation.
