Full textThis dissertation is the first translation of a Neo-Latin roman à clef entitled Peruviana (1644) which transposes to Peru the political and sentimental intrigues that took place in France under Louis XIII. This edition is accompanied with notes and preceded by a detailed introduction. The author of Peruviana, Claude-Barthélemy Morisot (April 12, 1592 – October 22, 1661), was a native of Dijon and belonged to a group of libertine scholars from the Republic of Letters during the first half of the 17th century. He is the author of several scholarly works, but Peruviana is his only novel.The first part of the introduction provides contextual elements about the narrative and its author, while also giving some of the keys to read the novel. The second part consists of a narratological analysis which deals with its literary issues and the use of sources – especially classical literature ; the confrontation between the referents and the structure of the plot highlights the steganographic and political dimension of this novel, a point on which third part of this study sheds light.It then becomes clear that thanks to the use of analogy and metaphor – which are characteristic devices of romans à clefs – the author conceived his work as a utopia in which the historical mechanisms reflecting those of the Cosmos might be apprehended and harmonized through a benevolent art that would take into account all the aspects and states of the social Materia(l) in order to lead it to an (almost) ideal fulfilment. This alchemical reading reveals that the entire novel is a metaphor of the Magnum Opus, whose architect would be the Poet offering the product of his wisdom to the future of mankind

Full textIn 551 AD, Jordanès, a christian author of gothic origin, wrote two books in latin : the De origine actibusque Getarum and the De summa temporum uel origine actibusque gentis Romanorum, which are also respectively called Getica and Romana. The first one of these texts drove attention because of the originality of its subject, the history of the gothic people, but the second one remained widely overlooked, if not despised. The Romana were only seen as a patchwork of already kown texts and Jordanes was supposed to have written it poorly, given that he’s presenting himself as an « agrammatus ».Therefore the goal of this thesis is to question these prejudices by proposing a new critical edition, a translation and a commentary of the Romana. The previous editors of Jordanes’ textes had biases, negatives (Mommsen 1882) or positives (Giunta & Grillone 1992 et Grillone 2017) about our author’s competences. And their editions were more a reflection of these biases that of Jordanes’original writting. We tried on the contrary to suspend our judgment as long as possible on the quality of the Romana et to let the manuscripts guide us so we can deliver a text which teaches us more about Jordanes.Furthermore, the Romana’s commentary reveals the interest of studying it. It is not caracterized by its literary qualities, but it is a good case study to see how history was made in the 6th century, which also gives a insight on of the lost Historia Romana of Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus. Lastly Jordanes shows us how Eastern Romans may have seen the empire and its history at their time. Indeed, besides the existent christian tone in the Romana, Jordanes leaves above all the impression of an helpless man facing his empire falling apart

Full textThe Greek novel from the imperial era, represented mainly by Chariton, Xenophon of Ephesus, Achilles Tatius, and Heliodorus, is characterized by strong conventions which lead to an unchanged pattern : young lovers go through various ordeals (pirates, false-deaths, rival lovers) before arriving at their happy ending. They have been considered as "idealistic" novels, distinguishing thereby from Latin novels known as Petronius' Satiricon and Apuleius' Metamorphoses, which are more focused on realistic and satirical comic techniques, like obscenity mixed up with grotesque. Nevertheless, we can also find some comic aspects in the Greek novels which, though differing from those of Latin novels, involve skills in a range of styles, from spiritual games to rude realism, as much as real literary ambition. Our study of comic techniques in Greek novels aims to reveal idiosyncratic aspirations and personalities, that correspond with the richness and complexities of the Greek literature from the imperial era

Full textMany political scientists perceived the recent history of africa as the exact replica of the political process in south america. Post-independent africa indeed experiences identical sociopolitical difficulties with latin american countries : social inequelities, tremendow debt, political subordination, army-controlled political power, etc. . . And those are signs of the failure of politics in both continent which generated a profuse production of literary works, espacially in the field of novel-writing where the dominant feature invariously comes out to be the military dictators. Every literature is the product and the image of the environnement in which it take rooks. This identity of inspiration is therefore not amazing, and such a community of fate has mather favoured the rise of what is called by some people a "thrid word literature". Somehow, novelists in both contients declaim against established military power and demigrate dictators, for they see their works as a contribution to the life of their respective societies. Full textBy its difference and its similarity, the man with the dark skin appeals to the elders who, from the Greek scientists, wanted to find geographical and climatic reasons, that is to say “scientific reasons”, to his otherness. It is the ancient Roman world that was chosen as the framework of this research. A corpus of literary, historical and philosophical Latin texts is used in a wide chronological range (from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD), however, in comparison with the Greek referents. The work is based on a lexicological approach, with the study of the Latin words of color and their different connotations, to investigate the interactions between evocation of skin color 'other' and social, philosophical, religious of the ancient Roman world. What are the dark-skinned men with whom the Romans came in contact, who came to the city, and what place they held, restricted between what limits and what functions, with what impact on their new environment - and on themselves. If necessary, the iconographic documentation is also requested. The field of patristic literature is explored, in which the dark-skinned man occupies a certain place, and we try to characterize the symbolic dimension that he acquires in the early Christian writers. The contributions of the foregoing experts (Fr. M Snowden Jr., L. S Senghor) are critically taken into account, taking into account the difficulty experienced by moderns in abstracting from their own cultural, conceptual and intellectual study these realities of contact between people with different skin color in the Roman world of antiquity

Full textThe crime novel is the imaginary illustration of a constant victorious justice in its fight against crime and its very relative success in Mexico proves that mexican society cannot be the gathering place of such an ideology. Nevertheless, P. I. Taibo II managed, contrary to historical logic, to reconcile the genre with the country. Through Cosa Fácil, La vida misma and Cuatro manos, an axiological jamming, better suited to collective mexican mentalities, gradually replaces crime novel manicheanism. At the same time, the enigma, following the sterilisation course of the investigation theme, disappears from plots. This phenomenon takes place when the enigmatic structure is getting more intricated. Therefore, Cuatro manos represents the defeat of the justice and the structural quintessence of the enigma. It is an attempt to litterary appropriateness and reorganisation of the destructured vision resulting from postmodern communicational abundance

Full textCentral America attracted greatly the media attention during the 1980s because of the armed conflicts and the increasing interest in testimonies linked to the political vindications. Now is the time to question the paths taken by Central American literature twenty years after the peace agreements were signed in the region. This question is found at the beginning of the present study on which we try to comprehend in what way the contemporary novel is interested in the construction of new subjectivities and in new means of representation specific to fiction. Contemporary Central American literature presents itself generally as a space of great diversity. We can read in it an important questioning of the contradictions, of the social struggles, and of the dominant discourses of isthmian societies. These questionings are, in our opinion, articulated on the literary text thanks to the privileged position given to subjectivity. It uses different ways to define the contemporary subject with the purpose of confronting the reader to a series of statements, intimist as well as political and transgressive, which express a crisis on the representation of national and personal identities. How far can we consider that contemporary Central American literature shows an important displacement related to the positions of the subjects represented in the novels? In what way said displacements interact in a conflictive region, a region which still has difficulties to define its own identity? On this thesis we make an effort to delve in the analysis of the subjective positions and in the literary and philosophical strategies which allow the construction of new subject-characters, in a corpus constituted of novels published between 1998 and 2009 by the following writers: Horacio Castellanos Moya, José Ricardo Chaves, Maurice Echeverría, Jacinta Escudos, Mauricio Orellana Suárez, Milagros Palma, Roberto Quesada, and Uriel Quesada. We are particularly interested in the narrative processes which relate intimacy and subjectivity with the representation of corporal spaces in the novels, as well as the geographical spaces and violence spaces. These elements will demonstrate new commitments and new discourses in a time that seems dominated by subjectivity
