Full textThe study of the child in francophone moroccan novels brings out the distinctive nature of this literary movement. The character, strougle autobiographical, entails an unconcious projection both individual and collective which allows the probing into the cultural mind. The portrayal of the close relationship between mother and child betrays the underlying aim of the novel writing : the quest of the origin. That of the ambiguous relationship between father and child discloses an immanent theory of the literary medium. A special form of childhood symbolism arouses from the original interaction between the traditional arabic heritage and contemporary western influence

Full textIn Maghreb and Black Africa, the father is an unquestionable and indisputable chief. Religion and tradition would give him a crucial function in these patriarchal societies. He has a great sovereignty in front of decisions which concern a member of his family. Driss Chraïbi, Mongo Beti, Rachid Boudjedra and Williams Sassine describe this excessive role of the father, not for glorifying him, like several francophone novelists, but for denouncing his authority. This attitude corresponds to a period where Maghrebian and Black African families are changing, particularly with the decline of the paternal power confronted to the “counter-power” of the son who speaks sometimes in the name of the mother. Then, psychoanalysis helps to read le Passé simple, Mission terminée, la Répudiation, le Jeune homme de sable, which can be considered as family novels showing sons revolt and its logical consequence: the parricide. What meaning we can give to this paternal authority and to these generation gaps without which narrative history don’t exist? How can we read sons revolt and “murder of father” as a youth aspiration of freedom and recognition, as assertiveness and search of identity? These Francophone authors, who represent, sometimes similarly sometimes differently, the conflict father-son through fictions with specific literary forms, have them the same literary project, which is to promote values of equity, of justice, of freedom in familial relations?

Full textFemale creation in Morocco, just like the woman's place in society in general, is still lagging behind what it should be. Though responsible for education and learning, women aren't recognized for what they're worth when it comes to culture. In the sphere of literature which is the object of this study -, women's writing is scarcely beginning to make itself known. In the past decade, female creation has developed noticeably, especially as far as French-language literature is concerned. This study endeavours to bring out the daily preoccupations of the Moroccan woman through the fiction modest as it may be - of Houria Boussejra, Nadia Chafik and Fatima Mernissi. It is the very nature of their writing that accounts for the choice of those three novelists. All of them express, to some extent, the will to free themselves from daily concerns by putting forward a "discourse and writing of the self". In H. Boussejra's work this search for the self turns into that of the bodyʺ, in N. Chafik's into a "voice", whereas in F. Mernissi's fiction it becomes a "space"

Full textThis study addresses the titled "The Quest for identity in the francophone postcolonial novel : Comparative approach of African literatures, island, north African and Caribbean. Broken glass case Alain Mabanckou, Ananda Devi Sigh, The Other Dancing Dracius Suzanne and The Sacred Night Tahar Ben Jelloun". It proposes to identify the various ways in which the quest for identity itself as privileged material of the structure of the four novels narrative. Party of the question: what does theliterature, we intend to demonstrate that the quest for identity is distinguished as the central motif in the composition of francophone postcolonial novel?. The choice for these four writers based on the desire to show the romantic theme of the operation of the search for identity. Indeed, applied to the internal dynamics of stories that structure the stories, the quest for identity emerges as the issue that crosses the writing of francophone postcolonial novel, especially in the writing of Alain Mabanckou, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Ananda Devi and Suzanne Dracius. By scientific standards, this study is divided into three areas. First historiographical axis. It attaches to a fairly simple understanding of the concepts of this study and illustrate the different facets in literary history. Then poetic axis where analytical. He has the title of "figures of the search for identity." It is striving to show how the pattern of the search for identity unfolds in the corpus. The third axis hermeneutic or interpretation undertaking further analysis and carry a number of interrogation on the concepts covered in the analytical sequence

Full textWho am I? Where from do I come? How I represent my world? Is it as it is, as I see myself or like I look at the others? In these questions which motivated this research work, the general answer is that any representation is made in a identical way: my glance thrown on the world is what I am and what I am not, the same and the various. This thesis of literature and compared civilizations shows as well as a Francophone fiction is the filtering, from the adventures of its author, anthropo-historic data of the world which is of use to him as decoration. The ascent at the source of the History of the Saharan peoples and the local imaginations reveal that these sociocultural universes have a common substratum that the events (climatic, political, etc. ) split up. So the identical representations draw from the unique as from the multiple to produce a speech which makes body with the other bodies. The analysis of some works of Ahmadou Kourouma, Tahar Ben Jelloun and of Abdourahman A. Waberi demonstrates that the contemporary fiction can lend itself to an anthropological or anthropoetic reading which stipulates that a representation is a sample of World-Imaginary as the member of a body is inseparable of the body. The current literary theories included that the literature is a part of cultural and social studies which are themselves a constituent of the anthropology defined as "all the human sciences". In other words, to read in a criticize way a fiction and it is to invest the field of the transdisciplinarity

Full textThe zairean literary works in french language owe their origin to the combined efforts of five principal factors : the introduction of french in the educational system of the belgian congo, the establishment of public libraries in the colony, the creation of socio-cultural circles with literary competition for the educated natives, the admission of blacks to press writings and finally, the alteration of the colonial literary works by the replacement of their approach to african realities. During the colonial period, the congolese narrative literature was marked by the works of paul lomami-tshibamba, one of the rare belgian congo writers to describe the awful change of the traditional african societies in contact with western civilisation. The extensive work of the traditional novelist exploits the relationship, established by the african mythology, between the visible world and the supernatural forces. Particularly inspired by the myth founders, inspired by the myth fonders, the authors magnified the greatness of traditional african civilisation with an effort to put its values in the modern world. Presently, the remarkable stride in the production of zairean literary works points in two directions : the intellectual writers who question the coming of the west into africa and the realist writers that challenge and condemn the bad management of public affaires by post-independent african leaders. Having attained maturity and autonomy in the mastery of writing, the zairean literary works now look forward to a nationwide spread. Their future is remarkably tied to that of francophony in africa

The survival of french as a no native language in the actual morocco, depends of socio-cultural and socio-economic factors influenced by the home and foreign state policy. The educative system is arabisted from the first primary school year up to the last year of the secondary cycle, but the universitary studies in scientific and technology fields so as the further education for adults are realised in french : people must be proficient in this language in order to obtain universitaty and professional diplomas. A linguistic polemic "french arab" exist in the moroccan society. The thesis shows that, nowaday in morocco, the french language is muting as a complementary tongue of the arabic language. Its statute is evolving to the state of a moroccan language following up and significatively the morocco's french speaking countries politic choices in his home, foreign and economic policy. The french-moroccan co-operation is instrumenting in developing those options

Full textWhen setting up a comparison between the maghreban novel in the french langage and the nouveau roman, we have constantly drawn upon the theoretical works of the "nouveaux romanciers" so as to study some of the narrative techniques adopted by kateb yacine in nedjma and rachid boudjedra in le demantelement. The evolution that the novel has undergone in the 20th century and the social and political situation spotted by the malaise which predominated france and the maghreb have made this bridging possible. Maghreban writer's use of french as a medium has not only heped them avoid the timeconsuming effort of experimentation but also acquiere an alreaudy-established literary genre. Hence, we have fore-grounded 3 aspects: "the book as a object", that is the self-referential nature and the formal aspect of the book, the distracting effect on the narrative of description, repetition and transformation, and finally the regular interruption of the narrative by the rhetorical aspect of character portrayal, and of time and space. The study of these aspects has show similarities and differences, for if the maghreban writers of french expression want to depict the real, the "nouveaux romanciers" confine them selves to the "adventure of wrinting"

After a presentation used to determine the various patterns of detective novels (whodunit, thriller, shocker, inverted novel, police procedural novel, spy novel, etc. . . ) and to describe the subdivisions of the detective gender, the method and the hypothesis, our study consists of three parts :The first part titled “ Background and rise of the Algerian detective novel “ tackles in two chapters, the social, historical environment _in which this particular writing develops. The second part, “The spy and detective novel”, methodically examines Algerian detective tales stricto sensu and explores the attractive junction between war novels and thrillers. The third and last part, titled “The hard-boiled novel”, ( the most extended, nearly three hundred pages ), searches the most valuable works of crime literature by famous writers as: Yasmina Khadra, Catherine Simon, Abdelkader Djemai, Azouz Begag, Francis Zamponi, Didier Daeninckx, Francois Muratet, Lakhdar Belaid, Boualem Sansal, Rahima Karim, Charaf Abdessemed. The analysis of this literary fiction is not only elaborated for itself, unnecessary , but in reference with the meanings it shows concerning Algerian and French societies, their common histories and memories. All along our study, we have been led to consider the political control (official or hidden), the reader's stimulus (almost absent in Algeria), and the edition and press's influence. More than a simple compilation, our work can be seen as an insightful reflection on the link between literature and society

In a word, the senegalese believers, haven't definitely give up, after several centuries of islamization their customs and their old beliefs (convictions)

Full textThe theme relating to the representation of the question of the "East" and the "West" has so far been essentially studied from texts written by the Westerners themselves, as did, for example, Edward Said in his famous book, Orientalism. Our thesis aims to study this issue from the writings of French-speaking novelists, that is to say authors from the "Orient" itself, more precisely from Algeria. The aim pursued in the present study is notably to know if this literature develops a counter-discourse related to. the orientalist imaginary or does it just reproduce, in one way or another, the same binary representations specific to this whole western knowledge about the East. The question is studied from a corpus comprising works of fiction covering different periods of evolution of this Algerian novel, that is to say that of the inter-war period, that of the war of liberation, and finally that of the postcolonial period. The study also takes into account the colonial literature that has touched on the question of the "East" and the "West".The analysis is based on four axes; the first one is related to the French language itself, insofar as, on the one hand, the French language constitutes the founding element of this literature, and on the other hand because of its influence on the imaginary developed around the subject matter of our study. The second axis refers to a strictly literary approach, since this dimension is also a field within which the problematic of the "East" and the "West" is expressed. The third axis concerns women, a theme that occupies a central place in the representation of the "Orient" in the Western imagination, but which presents also as a major problematic issue in the Algerian French written novel at different periods of its evolution . The last axis concerns the fictionalization of Islam as a marker par excellence of the "Orient" in the Western imagination since the Middle Ages, a marker which tends today to replace the notion of "Orient" herself. The French novel did not fail to put Islam in fiction, especially in the in between the Word Wars’ novel and that of the independence period.Without falling into generalization or denying this literature its innumerable achievements, especially qualitatively or through the rereading of orientalism with which it entertains complex relations, our study leads to the conclusion that the Algerian French written novel, especially because of it deterritorialization , didn’t reach a beyond of “East” and “West” level. It has been undergoing the constraints of the new forms of hegemony peculiar to the post-colonial period exerted by a certain "West" on the "East". Consequently, it could not be constituted into an autonomous literature, expressing the universal, free from the stakes and constraints related to the dominant / dominated equation. The new forms of domination, more subtle, leave clear marks in the relations between France and its former colony in the literary field, sometimes making the Algerian novel a discourse inscribed in the register of the "art of the dominated"

Here we have displayed the roots conditions of the female novel in algeria. We have also detailed the view of the first women writers on their reality through varied topics, revolt against family and the longing to gain freedom. . . The second chapter is about the second generation of algerian women writers 1962-1980 and it focuses on the attitude towards sexuality, the female desire and the birth of the couple. The third chapter, the third generation of algerian women writers 1980-1998, is about the social and political conditions in the eighties and nineties which favored the female upcoming into writing. We have tried to outline the mechanism of rebellion brought about by women writers and their prospect of taboo subjects such as religion, politics and sexuality

Full textThe most striking feature of the portrait of the intellectual in french-speaking african fiction is the high tone of misery with which he is credited. He appears as a solitary individual, violently separated from his people and culture but unable to adopt the bulk of western values. He cuts the figure of a "cultural monster", a product of an incomplete metamorphosis. In the post-colonial novel, he is still presented as a lonely figure though faced now with a new set of problems; a moral gulf separates him from the corrupt ruling class while his cultural and intellectual transformation weakens his bonds with his people. Though his efforts to correct the situation generally fail he is usually presented by the novelists as a man of justice, truth and goodwill. In the francophone novel in general, the intellectual appears entangled in a plethora of myths suchas a) the assimilation myth, which presents him as the victim of a colonial conspiracy, b) the messianic myth by which he appears as the liberator chosen by destiny, c) the education myth or the absolute trust in western education and the talisman of degrees, and d) the literary myth : the intellectual as a hero of the novel matures into a literary myth by virtue of the frequency with which he appears and the symbolic role he seems to play in the literature of committment

The first part, which deals with oral narratives (two tales and two epics), shows the strong link between magic and the enunciation context. The aim of this work is to connect the magic efficiency to the debate on truth of African traditional knowledge upon reality. Novels such as the ones of Tutuola and Sony Labou Tansi don't take consideration of this debate since they don't respect the spatio-temporal representations of our reality and adopt the witchcrafts position which unsettles the coordinates of reality to dive in the heart of the magic universe

Full textContemporary novel-writing has undergone constant changes since the Nineteen-eighties. It can be said that ideological, aesthetic and thematic choices have clearly evolved in comparison with earlier periods. Several critics do in fact speak about a "new" literature. Many writers attempt to exploit the Creole imaginary vision by trying more particularly to reappropriate the History they have been deprived of. Attempts are made to reestablish a precise filiation and to restore the power of expression to the Guadeloupean actors of this History. Furthermore, an ever-increasing creolisation has resulted from the study of our customs and habits. In addition, attempts are made to reconstruct an identity which has long been denied us. This new identity implies that a policy must be created which takes into account both French and Creole. A majority of writers wish to legitimize the Guadeloupean in his native land without necessarily claiming their adherence to the "Creolity" movement. Others prefer the concept of "Americanity", setting their characters wander from the Caribbean to France to the American continent. Others get their inspiration from subjects which have no direct connection to our island. It is from this diversity that emanates the vitality and profusion of the contemporary Guadeloupean novel

Next, we bring out and compare some common themes: the concept of the east and its relations with the west, religious culture and the religious conflicts both within and among multiconfessional societies, and finally the image of the middle eastern woman and her social status. After this, we try by a socio-historical analysis of certain terms, expressions, and images, to show the influence of the arab-muslim culture upon these writers. This thesis examines the communication of meaning in the context of the translation from French into English of a contemporary Moroccan novel, Une Vie à Trois, by Bahaa Trabelsi. To explore the notion of a faithful translation, the approach of the Ecole Superieure d'lnterpretes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) is examined. This approach, developed by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer, emphasises the communication of meaning and the crucial role that interpretation plays in the act of translation. The project is composed of two parts - the practical application of the ESIT approach in the production of a translation of Une Vie à Trois and a theoretical study of the approach.

In the french language litteratures, its originality has perseveringly been enforced as a result of a new type intertextual work: codes belonging to the oral litterature sphere have been grafted upon classical romantic writing codes. This cross-breeding lead to an innovation writing. After having situated this type of novel in his cultural field, within its expectation horizon perspective, we have analysed the different oral litterature grafts, each element that was considered as a "gap" from the point of view of the french writing rules. Then we have gone into the properly so-called intertextual work, in order to clear up text production and its stakes. This time, the codes cross-breeding and the process by which the writing absorbs and transforms the oral statements fragments have been emphasized. "translation" has a well been put into evidence as an aspect particularly important concerning intertextuality: in the accurate case of the french language african novel, we deal, in fact, with the insertion of statements originating from the traditional oral civilization into a language and a style introduced from europe. The analysis has revealed that it does never mean a simple transfert of signification from the source language to the target language, but the matter is about transpositions and creations. Full textThe negro-african fiction literature has mainly focussed on successive violences that have agitated the African continent. For instance, the apartheid that is mostly cited in South African literature works; the Mau-Mau upheaval in Kenya and the liberation wars in Mozambique and in Angola have generated a literature of fight; secession wars in Nigeria as well as political conflicts in Sudan, Tchad, Liberia, Sierra Leona, Congo, etc. Have been a good starting point of an important novel production. However, there is a belief that the misery is a consequence of the violence; that is also a common denominator of a big number of literature fictions. Can massacres that happened in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide be placed in that violence roundabout? Among writers invited by Fest’Africa for “Writing for memory purposes” are B. B. Diop, K. Lamko and T. Monénembo whose literature works are Murambi le livre des ossements, La Phalène des collines and L’Aîné des orphelins respectively, are particularly interesting in both language and style. Sociocultural and linguistic observations drawn from the Rwandan context offer a new image of the African literature. The onomastics, xenism and oral characteristics related to Kinyarwanda are among elements that portray the local color tied to the African Great Lakes region. Neologisms, polysemisation in written texts, the renewal of common expressions, etc. As well as new exaggerating comparisons are all ingredients of story-telling novels whose topic doesn’t allow stylistic aesthetics. Netheverless, allusions to the Holocaust are a proof that those fictions are inspired by the Shoah literature and bring writers to make close comparisons between two genocides separated by a half century
