Abstract:
The appearance in 2003 of 21 Georges Simenon novels in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade reaffirmed a widespread consensus that French-language crime fiction, especially the roman noir with its vigil over the political and social ills of the nation, had secured its position as an important vector of French cultural history. Its sister genre, the thriller, has fared less well. Justly criticised for its expedient style and limited intellectual horizons, the thriller continues to appeal to a mass readership drawn from all sectors of society. This article locates its attractions in the ways in which we might once have engaged with the adventure stories of our collective youth that furnished our first solitary contact with literary fiction. It argues that our response to narrative suspense in adventure stories consumed in early adolescence is later rekindled and developed in the more adult thrillers of the modern age. Working within a conceptual framework that includes the psychologically based thrillers of Boileau-Narcejac and Sébastian Japrisot juxtaposed with the adrenalin rush of events supplied by Dan Brown and Maxime Chattam, it analyses the different modalities of suspense and their concomitant reading pleasures, concluding that the thriller meets the expectations not of a certain group of readers but of a certain type of reading experience.

Abstract:

The article reflects on how contemporary science fiction has initiated a paradigmatic shift in the conceptualization of hegemonic force. Focussing on the figure of the Daemon depicted in two recent techno-thriller novels – Daemon (2009) et Freedom (2010) by American author Daniel Suarez – I show how the pervasive conceptions surrounding the agency of modern technology that we find in the late writings of Martin Heidegger are confronted in twenty-first century narratives that question the way we conceptualize the hegemonic directing of human consciousness by re-examining the figures of Ancient Greco-Roman thought. In the article, I pay particular attention to how what I call the “daemonic mobility” of human thought that we find in the writings of the Neo-Platonist Apuleius is eliminated by Augustine in his devising (in City of God and his other writings) of a permanent locus of existential consciousness, and how this contributes to Heidegger’s understanding of the essence of technology as the “coming to presence of art”. By re-investing the figure of the daemon and the mobility of human thought, Suarez narratives allow us to renew our understanding of the nature of this poeisis.

Abstract:
Text is a novel of manners with elements of a thriller, a noir, and a detective novel (but the above-mentioned complementary elements fulfill only a supportive role, because the criminal intrigue exposed at the very beginning is treated marginally amounts to a starting point for deeper considerations of the psychological and sociological nature). Due to the peculiar presentation of the image of the Center (here: Moscow), Text fits into the vision of Moscow as the core of Russian predatory capitalism, exuberant consumerism, glitz, semblance and ruthless struggle for recognition in the ranking of successful people, which is presented in contemporary Russian literature. Its fundamental value is the fact that the realization of the author's idea is mainly due to the confrontation of megalopolis with images of the periphery, which can be regarded as satellite cities of the capital. In his perception of Russia, Glukhovsky is close to Roman Senchin and, similarly to the latter, he believes that the traditionally understood center-periphery, city-village conflict is disappearing, because eventually it turns out that (despite the spatial and social diversity) none of these places (mainly because of conspicuous regressive tendencies) does not give a person a chance for free development and self-realization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Back Cover as a Place for Creating an Image of Translated Literature: Polish Translations of French-Canadian Novels (2000-2016)
The back cover of a book contains peritext added by the publisher, with a double function of information (about the author and the work) and invitation to read the book. That is why it also becomes the place where publishers decide on a certain image of the books. For this study, we have collected back cover texts from French-Canadian novels which were published in the Polish translation in the years 2000-2016, and we have considered them as a certain image of this literature given to the Polish reader by the publishers. These texts are also a source of information about this literature for the readers. The results of the analysis of the covers of 27 novels published in Poland in the studied period allow us to state that this image is deformed and simplified: it does not reflect the language and regional differences of Canadian literature today. The works themselves belong to such genres as fantasy, thriller or chick lit: they are attractive, pleasant to read, often awarded and adapted for the screen. The “cover image” of the French-Canadian literature given by Polish translations reflects rather the strategy of their publishers: it seems that their choices of translated works are directed mainly by economic prudence.

Abstract:
The only three surviving frescoes from the Roman world to depict a series of episodes from Homer's Iliad in continuous frieze format are all found on a single street in Pompeii. They were published in 1953 in V. Spinazzola's Pompei alla luce degli scavi nuovi di Via dell’Abbondanza (anni 1910-1923), vol. 2, under the editorship of S. Aurigemma, whose detailed descriptions and interpretation of the iconography and epigraphy have remained largely unchallenged. Relatively poorly preserved, they exhibit a puzzling interplay between their iconography, epigraphy and the Homeric text, and even the chronology of the epic itself. Each of the Iliad friezes, like the Odyssey frescoes in the Vatican Museums, in parts reflect close adherence to the text of their respective epics, yet each contains details which do not derive from the Homeric account: some alter it in subtle ways, noticeable only to those who know their Homer well, but there are also extra-Homeric figural scenes and painted epigraphy in the form of labels which, although traditionally considered to be errors made by an ill-educated artist or even evidence of the use of hypotheses of the Iliad and Odyssey, must derive from some external source. This paper seeks to show that in the Iliad frieze of the Casa di D. Octavius Quartio it may be possible to establish the source of the extra-Homeric insertions: the details appear to refer not only to the erudite realm of Homeric epic, but also to the thrill and violence of contemporary arenas.

Abstract:
This article explain about terrorist’s bombing toward a Roman Catholic cathedral in Jolo, southern Philippines, Sunday 27 January 2019 morning. At least 22 people were reportedly killed tragically and nearly 50 others were injured. The suicide bombing of the husband and wife exploded during Sunday Mass in Jolo is the first bomb explosion was carried out by a woman from inside the church who smashed benches, smashed windows and left the body of the victim at the Catholic church located in Jolo. The first explosion occurred at Jolo Cathedral in Sulu Province. The second bomb exploded outside the church after the congregation left to save themselves. The second bomb was carried out by a man who was the husband of the first bomber. This Jolo suicide bombing mimics the suicide bombing of a family of 8-9 May 2018 in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. Nobody thought that the perpetrators came from one whole family. Officers revealed that the bombers in the three churches were the families of Mr. Dita Oepriyanto and Mrs. Puji Kuswati. These parents invited their four children to take action in three different churches. Their four children have a very young and young age. Yusuf Fadil's son (18), Firman Halim (16), daughter of Fadhila Sari (12), and Pamela Riskita (9). The familial terroist bombing in Jolo dan Surabaya is a reflection that our world today is 'a world full of the thrill of underground revenge, inexhaustible and never satisfied in an explosion'. The present is a age of anger

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis 'Comme un roman policier: Daniel Pennacs Malaussène-Serie als Spielart des Kriminalromans' delivers a thorough analysis of a popular French series consisting of five novels which are rooted in crime literature. The contemporary French author Daniel Pennac makes a playful use of elements characteristic both of the detective novel als well as the thriller. Aspects of the analysis include the structure of the novels, techniques of narration, depiction of society, methods of detection and use of language. Based on René Girard's scapegoat-theory Pennac creates the tragicomic hero of Benjamin Malaussène. Besides the exceptional protagonist, the rest of the Malaussène-universe can be divided into a 'good' in-group and a 'bad' out-group. Pennac draws rough sketches of the characters by using stereotypes and the inversion of stereotypes. By these means Pennac reveals by which absurd and paradoxical mechanisms the contemporary Western society often works. Concerning the detection, the author does not stick to traditional methods, but extents the intruments of knowledge to the supernatural. Theses variations of detective novel and thriller regarding the contents are presented in an elaborated and metaphorical style which furthermore contains innumerable reflections on language and literature. The thesis concludes with a classification of Pennac's Malaussène-Saga within the frame of modern French as well as crime literature.

Abstract:
The French crime novel from 1970 to 2000The following thesis conducts literary analysis on French crime novels of the late twentieth century. The intention is then to show that if these detective novels can be analyzed with the tools of literary analysis, these novels can then be considered literary works and their authors as writers in their own right. The corpus contains the main novels of four authors spread over the last four decades of the twentieth century: Jean-Patrick Manchette, Frederick H. Fajardie, Didier Daeninckx and Tonino Benacquista. The tools selected for analysis are those related to novels characters, the places in which these novels take place and different types of plots offered by the authors. This is the work of Yves Reuter, Isabelle Krzywkowski and Paul Larivaille. These authors have allowed the analysis of selected texts and also allowed the author to confront these same texts to literary analysis tools in academic use. Thus literary analysis produced by the author allows him to advance the idea that the texts of detective novels, being analyzed with these tools, can be part of the regular corpus of literature

Lavault, Maya. "Des secrets à l’œuvre : formes et enjeux romanesques du secret dans À la recherche du temps perdu de Marcel Proust." Thesis, Paris 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA040200.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation about the secret in À la recherche du temps perdu attempts to show that the secret, as a fiction theme involving the very structure of the narrative, allows to seize the tense, within Proust’s work, between a positivist conception, both of the narration and of the meaning, broadly dependent upon the 19th century models of epistemology, and its questioning, which characterizes the fiction production of the 20th century. The analysis of figures and recurring patterns of the secret, related to the success of this notion in the history of ideas and novel writing forms at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries, shows that Proust’s imaginary world in la Recherche is marked by both his own myths and themes inherited from the detective and adventures novel. Then, the analysis of the narrative technique, which gives its enigmatic structure to the novel, makes it possible to identify the “hermeneutic journey” proposed to the reader in the footsteps of the hero-narrator: its dynamic, reflecting the emergence of an evidential paradigm accompanying the renewal of human sciences, is gradually undermined by the emergence of a different logic, based on the indeterminacy of meaning and the multiplicity of viewpoints. Lastly, the analysis of the generic and interpretative “entre-deux” shows that Proust’s work proposes an experience of reading which paves the way for a conception of interpretation based on the consideration of the textual virtualities involved by fictional writing

Abstract:
The thesis presented here with deals with an analysis and genre definition of the Nordic detective story, which is currently very popular in the Czech Republic. It is namely an interpretation of the works done by two contemporary Nordic authors in question, i.e. Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbø. With the first of the two authors I will be looking into the complete trilogy The Millenium containing volumes of Män som hatar kvinnor (2005), Flickan som lekte med elden (2006) and Luftslottet som sprängdes (2007). As regards in Nesbø's works, I have chosen a series of detective stories with detective Harry Hole as the main character, especially two of them Panserhjerte (2009) and Snømannen (2007) and which appear to be the most successful and the most typical. On the grounds of the analysis of the particular literary categories such as the character of a detective and their investigative techniques, the narrative pattern, the narrator, and the continuum which are compared with the similar categories within individual historical detective schools itemized in the theoretical part of the thesis, and compared as well with other genres, it is to be stated that the Nordic crime fiction might be located somewhere on the border line between the detective story, the critical social novel and the thriller, taking on at...

The voice is the voice of Jacob, yet the hands are the hands of Esau. Genesis 27:22 Jewish literature of the Hellenistic and Roman periods has attracted different groups of scholars for different reasons. In modern times, it was Western Christian scholars—or Western scholars interested in the beginnings of Christianity—who first took up the challenge. They were fascinated by the opportunity to reconstruct the context and background of the New Testament world and benefited from the accessibility of manuscript sources preserved in Greek, Latin, and the vernacular languages of the West. Eastern Christian scholars, in turn, often belonged to emergent national schools and were thrilled that their heritages, typically unknown to Western scholars, could also contribute to the study of an ancient and universal legacy....
