Palavras-chave: narratologia; arquivo; ficção marítima Abstract:The literary historians are excavating a great range of forgotten literary forms, which posits the important question on how to apprehend their specificity. Abstract:
Jewish culture has a continuous existence of nearly three millennia. This course isolates a small portion of it to read, in translation, work composed during the Middle Ages by authors from several countries and in several genres: parable and fantasy, lyric and lament, polemic, marriage manual, romance. Some of our material has not been translated into English before and is not yet available in print. We are fortunate to have brand-new pre-print copies of Meir of Norwich and especially of the famous Yiddish romance the Bovo-buch (in the course-pack)—an early modern version of a widely-read (non-Jewish) medieval text. Primary texts will be supplemented by scholarly books on which each student will offer a short class presentation.

Abstract: Lancelot en Prose, an extensive romance where Lancelot’s biography is developed, is integrated into the wide cycle of Arthurian romances that was written in France during the second decade of the thirteenth century. This text testifies, as long as we are concerned, a clear exploration of the biblical potentials in medieval literature. Our analysis will focus essentially on a discursive moment that we consider to be central to the romance: the reprimand directed to Arthur by a preudome that presents himself before the king’s court. We will try to identify, through the confrontation between the referred excerpt of Lancelot en Prose and the Scripture which are the elements withheld in it and how they were treated. By this confrontation we hope to ascertain the authorial intentions in the use of the biblical source. Keywords: Lancelot en Prose, Bible, theory of kingship, Arthurian romance.

Abstract:
When Students of Western European Medieval Literature speak of the rise of the vernacular, they often do not mean what you might think they mean—neither the continued use of Latin as a written vernacular for over five hundred years after the fall of the Roman Empire nor the first texts in Celtic, Germanic, and Semitic languages, from the fourth to the tenth century. They mean something later and geographically narrower—the writing that emerges from the breakup of Latin into distinct regional speech patterns, the Romance languages and literatures, primarily in the territories of modern France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Although understanding the rise of Romance-language literature as the rise of vernacular writing misrepresents medieval European literature, it has an important rationale. The twelfth-century literature of what is now France—Old French romance in the north, Occitan (formerly Provençal) lyric in the south—establishes continent-wide norms, thereby giving European literature a coherent set of forms and themes for the first time.

Abstract:

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Raquel Weber.pdf: 4682234 bytes, checksum: 8377ceda95fbe0e25229a74622ffaf41 (MD5)<br>Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-28T16:34:28Z (GMT). Fisher, Marianne. "Nobility in Middle English romance." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54052/.

Full text
Abstract:
Medieval nobility was a compound and fluid concept, the complexity of which is clearly reflected in the Middle English romances. This dissertation examines fourteen short verse romances, grouped by story-type into three categories. They are: type 1: romance and lost heirs (Degaré Chevelere Assigne, Sir Perceval of Galles, Lybeaus Desconus, and Octvian); type 2: romances about winning a bride (Floris and Blancheflour, The Erle of Tolous, Sir Eglamour of Artois, Sir Degrevant, and the Amis-Belisaunt plot from Amis and Amiloun); type 3: romances of improversihed knights (Amiloun's story from Amis and Amiloun, Sir Isumbras, Sir Amadace, Sir Cleges, and Sir Launfal). The analysis is based on contextualized close reading, drawing on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu. The results show that Middle English romance has no standard criteria for defining nobillity, but draws on the full range of contemporary opinion; understandings of nobility conflict both between and within texts. Ideological consistence is seldom a priority, and the genre apparently serves neither a single socio-political agenda, nor a single socio-political group. The dominant conception of nobility in each romance is determined by the story-type. Romance type 1 presents nobility as inherent in the blood, type 2 emphasizes prowess and force of will, and type 3 concentrates on virtue. However, no romance text offers just one definition; implicitly or explicitly, there are always alternatives. This internal variety indicates tha the romances imagine nobility scene-by-scene; even a text seemingly committed to one perspective is liable to abandon it temporarily if there is another better suited to the narrative moment. Ideological expression always comes second to effective story-telling. This means the texts are frequently inconsistent and sometimes illogical, but that multiplicity is of their very essence.

Abstract:
Pretende-se, a partir disso, entender como Machado de Assis, ao reutilizar os recursos literários trabalhados em outros gêneros (teatro e conto), ressignificando-os, desenvolve as primeiras obras de seu projeto romanesco, uma vez que, nelas, o autor persegue de perto a mais bem acabada configuração do perfil do personagem, que, ao expor seu drama particular, expressa os interesses subjacentes das relações, formatando um recorte ímpar daquela sociedade e vislumbrando a concepção machadiana de cor local, por conseguinte, sua crítica aos costumes e às debilidades das instituições do Rio de Janeiro de sua época.<br>Abstract: The aim of the present study is to understand, through the analysis of the critical and fictional texts published between 1858 and 1878, how the literary consciousness of Machado de Assis is formed and how the writer interferes in literary production by demonstrating his concern for the quality of texts of the contemporaneous writers, with the acceptance of the reading public and with the creation of a favorable environment for his fictional work of this period - theater, short story and, mainly, novel. It is intended, from this, to understand how Machado de Assis, by reusing the literary resources worked in other genres (theater and short story), re-signifying them, develops the first works of his novel project, since, in them, the author pursues the most well-defined configuration of the character's profile, which, in exposing his particular drama, expresses the underlying interests of the relationship, shaping a unique cut of that society and looking at Machado's conception of local color, hence his critique of customs and to the weaknesses of the institutions of Rio de Janeiro of his time.<br>Doutor

Um “homem sem importância” que não pode ser chamado de “herói”, a não ser impropriamente, pois estariam mais para os anti-heróis<br>It analyzes O cheiro do ralo and O natimorto of Lourenço Mutarelli from the perspective of the tragicomic novel that combines the playful and tragic as constitutive of the narrative, so that the reader does not know, often, if it laughs or pities. In the other words, antagonistic feelings are caused, which end up in complementing themselves in the course of Lourenço Mutarelli's writing. In the contemporary narratives and dramaturgies it can not be found so much room for tragedies or comedies as separated genres. It Is shown in this manner in our context, and as we shall see in Mutarelli's literature, the end of the great division between the high tragic and the low comic. To support our argument, we will prove that, contrary to what George Steiner speaks about the death of tragedy, you can find a tragic vision on our day, however, updated to our historical and social context. The serious aspect proper of the tragedy, no longer holds in our world, where there is nothing more that can survive much seriousness. Also, in our time, we do not have the noble heroes of yore, but it is increasingly the figure of the common man, the everyday man, who will sustain the tragic. A "man of no importance" that can not be called "hero", unless improperly, because they would be more the antiheroes

Randall, Lesa Beth. "Representations of syphilis in sixteenth-century French literature." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/284029.

Full text
Abstract:
Syphilis caused unprecedented terror as it rapidly spread through Western Europe at the onset of the sixteenth century. In France, a flourish of literary production specifically about syphilis provides an important record of various reactions to what constituted the first known experience of deadly disease, sexually transmitted. This dissertation examines three types of literary representations of syphilis in texts dating from 1500-1550, by authors as familiar as Rabelais and Jean LeMaire de Belges, in addition to many that remain anonymous. With a foundation of anthropological theories of sickness as danger and pollution, psychoanalytic theory is employed to elucidate the thought processes that led to the pervasive blaming and scapegoating of women, the most common social reaction to syphilis seen in this literature. Organization of texts on the same subject into separate units was achieved by considering the tone with which they deal with syphilis. Chapter One presents and analyses Le Triomphe de Treshaulte et Puissante Dame Verolle, the only known Renaissance compilation of texts about syphilis. Reliance on allegory and myth to explain the origins and causes of syphilis make this text a prime example of socially sanctioned literary reaction to the disease, clearly the most polite discourse found to date. Chapter Two examines the cornucopian representations of syphilis found in Rabelais. As a monk, physician and writer, Rabelais had a unique and varied perspective on the disease. His text imitates, reverses or mocks most common reactions to syphilis while advancing the important message of 'temperance in all things' that forms and informs his works. Twelve popular poems, mostly anonymous, are presented in Chapter Three. Analysis of vivid, realistic descriptions of loss associated with syphilis and a discourse of warning whose foundation rests on the denigration of women demonstrate that these texts were both cathartic and didactic. A compilation and translation of the works discussed in chapters one and three appear as special appendices, so that these cultural artifacts may be considered in future studies of social reaction to deadly, sexually transmitted disease in Renaissance France.

Abstract:
Ünlem edatları, Türkçede diğer sözcük türlerine göre üzerinde daha az değerlendirmenin yapıldığı sözcük grubudur. Diğer taraftan, ünlem edatlarının kökeni, yapısı, dil bilgisel anlamları gibi konularda çalışmalar giderek artmaktadır. Bu çalışmalardan biri de doğal ünlem edatlarının diğer ünlem edatlarından farklılık gösteren yazım biçimlerinin araştırılmasıdır. Söz konusu çalışmada bu biçimler üzerinde durulmuştur. Ünlemler içerisinde köken bakımından herhangi bir dünya diline ait olmayan bir tür doğal refleks durumundaki doğal ünlem edatları boğumsuz seslerden oluşurlar. Dildeki boğumlu seslerden oluşan sözcüklerin aksine bunların standartları belirlenmiş bir yazım biçimi de bulunmamaktadır. Bu çalışmada doğal ünlem edatlarının Türkiye Türkçesindeki söz konusu farklı yazım biçimleri çeşitli roman, hikâye ve derlemden seçilen örnek kullanımlarla incelenmiştir
