Abstract:
Romance Proverbs with the Twelve Months: the Paremical and Monthly Characterization of the Year. There are various types of weather and calendar proverbs in the Romance languages. Not only concerning their motivation, but also concerning their length. Among the proverbs referring to the months, some are very short, just two or three words, the so-called “minimal proverbs”, while others are quite long, and curiously defy any kind of mnemonics. Our corpus will be made up of the latter type: thirteen proverbs mentioning all the twelve months of the year, which represent five different Romance varieties; from west to east: Portuguese (1 proverb), Spanish (2), Catalan (5), Italian (4) and the Laziale Italian variant (1). We classify these formulae, which lie on the thresholds of what strictly might be considered proverbs, in two groups: proverbs without meteorological implication and meteorological proverbs. On the other hand, we classify the examples of the second group in four sections according to the characteristics that are attributed to one or several months: proverbs with a characteristic for several months, proverbs with a characteristic for each pair of months, proverbs with a characteristic for some of the months, and sayings attributing a different feature for each month. This corpus offers a glimpse to the way Romance peoples view the months and it reveals affinities in the form of paremic types (or “paremiotypes”), which tell us about the popular culture shared by the peoples that are heirs of Rome.

Abstract:
This article proposes the translatological approach called intracultural translation, that is, translation within the same language-culture, coined by Desrine Bogle (2014), with specific reference and application to the Creole language using H. P. Grice’s conversational implicature, Venuti’s application to translation, and Roman Jakobson’s intralinguistic translation as theoretical frameworks. Mirroring the approach of the translator working within Romance languages who employs the Latin roots of these languages to judiciously resolve difficult translation issues, the concept of intracultural translation reinforces the notion of a Creole world view, product of a shared history, as evidenced through a shared linguistic and cultural heritage or “storehouse” from which translators of Creole texts can freely select elements to undertake their activity of intercultural transfer. In seeking to affirm and maintain the cohesiveness of Creole identity against the homogenizing effect of globalization, intracultural translation, currently underexplored and underexploited, is presented as a viable translatological approach to texts in Creole. Intracultural translation is exemplified through a case study of the English translations of three French Creole proverbs in the French Caribbean novel Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle by Simone Schwarz-Bart.

Abstract:

Abstract:
<p>Ahmed Arif, who is one of the Sociable Poets of the 1940s, wrote about the topics in his works in a romantic style. The enthusiasm and the romance in his works separates him from other poets of the era. Although he wrote only one poetry book, his poems such as <em>Hasretinden Prangalar Eskittim, Haberin Var mı? (İçerde), Terketmedi Sevdan Beni </em>became famous and were composed and sung by famous singers of Turkey like Funda Arar, Ahmet Kaya, Suavi, Edip Akbayram, Cem Karaca. These events made him become a famous poet not only in a narrow society who had similar thoughts, but also all over Turkey. There are many sources for the lyricism and romance that gave him this fame. However, the most important share among these many sources belongs to his love for Leyla Erbil. He did not limit his love with poems and he conveyed his love for Leyla Erbil in the letters he wrote, most of which were written between the years 1954-1959, and the last of which was written in 1977. In his poems, Ahmed Arif told his love, his environment, the intellectual world of the era, his exiles and the challenges he had experienced. All these reasons make the verbal existence of the <em>Letters from Ahmed Arif to Leyla Erbil</em> important. For this reason, in this study, the letters are examined in terms of verbal existence and the words in his works are classified under titles such as <em>Basic Word Existence</em>, <em>Proverbs</em>, <em>Phrases</em>, <em>Terms</em>, <em>Verbal Structures</em>, <em>Reduplications</em>, <em>Slang and Expletives</em>, <em>Sayings specific to Diyarbakır</em>, etc. and the concept areas are defined. As a result of this, it has been determined that Ahmed Arif was infatuated with Leyla Erbil, he even placed her in the very center of his personal life, sometimes he deified her, and defined her as “<em>My lady, my friend, by sister, my daughter, my god, my messenger</em>”. Moreover, it was also observed that the local sayings, phrases, and especially slang and expletives have important places in Ahmed Arif’s vocabulary.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Özet</strong></p><p>1940 Kuşağı Toplumcu Şairleri arasında yer alan Ahmed Arif, eserlerinde dile getirdiği konuları romantik bir söylemle dile getirmiştir.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis deals with proverbial usage in A Sentimental Journey, A Journal to Eliza, and A Political Romance. It consists of three compilations of proverbs, three commentaries, and a listing of the proverbial expressions cited in each work. In the 'Compilations', those parts of the text in which proverbs occur are quoted followed by the proverbs as they are cited in both modem and contemporary dictionaries. The 'Commentary' deals with the significance of the proverb in each work. In chapter 1, the different devices employed by Sterne when manipulating proverb lore are categorised and examined. In chapters 2, 3 and 4 the different ways in which proverb lore reflects upon the principal themes and ideas, in the three works, are analysed. In the 'Lists of Proverbs' following the commentary, all the proverbs, and the repeated proverbs, cited in Sterne's three works are listed in the order in which they occur in the different texts. The 'Compilations', the 'Commentary' and the 'Lists of Proverbs' complement one another: while the first part of the thesis testifies to Sterne's familiarity with his tradition and the degree of his reliance upon it, the third comprises a synopsis of Part I, and the second deals with the significance of proverb lore in each work. The present endeavour highlights an important aspect of Sterne's writings and makes a contribution to the corpus of literary criticism about the author.

Abstract:
Alfredo Vieira de Freitas (AVF) is the author we will focus on this internship report from the Master in Linguistics: Societies and Cultures, due to the linguistic and sociocultural interest of his holdings, paving the way for a better knowledge of his work and life dedicated to popular oral and traditional Madeiran collections. The report presents an approach to AVF's life and work, highlighting its pedagogical intervention as a Portuguese teacher, motivating students to collect tales or legends, stories and popular songs, such as essays to be given to the teacher, which are contained in his assets, along with other handwritten popular collections he made. The main objective of our internship work was to inventory, catalog, separate, transcribe and systematize the large number and diversity of popular collection manuscripts from the AVF holdings. Then came the great challenge of proposing a classification for the published and unpublished tales and legends, traditional novels, and popular songs in his assets. Finally, from the confrontation between the collected and published versions, we can confirm the option of AVF for the normalization of the writing, not always preserving the traces of popular and regional Madeiran speech, in the publications of the oral and traditional compositions. In AVF collections, the popular songs predominate, some of which he published in O Amor in Madeiran folklore and O Humor in Madeiran folklore (of the people and for the people). Following are the tales and legends, some of them published in Once upon a time… in Madeira, legends, tales and traditions of our land (1964), and Madeiran folk tales (1988). Then there are the traditional novels, riddles, popular sayings or expressions and proverbs that AVF didn’t publish. With this work, we intend to contribute to the treatment, study and dissemination of popular, oral and traditional collections made by AVF and his students, valuing them by showing their linguistic and sociocultural interest, as a linguistic-ethnographic heritage of Madeira and Porto Santo.

Abstract:
This chapter examines a particular way in which feelings of love are expressed in the Palaiologan romances (c. 1250–1350). This manner of expression is presented through the systematic use of an imagery and vocabulary of lamentation, that incorporates into these highly artful poetic narratives a discourse deriving from folk poetry. These amorous laments (moirologia), as they are sometimes called by the narrators or even the characters, are not direct quotations of actual folk laments or songs as folklorists in the early twentieth century believed. They are a way of presenting amorous feelings to Byzantine listeners or readers (initially within an aristocratic courtly milieu, later also within a bourgeois environment) in a manner attuned to their contemporary and specific socio-cultural context, yet structurally keeping to the conventions set by the ‘Hellenising’ novels of the Komnenian age. These folk-like songs reflect a new type of poetic and emotional sensibility in late Byzantium, partly in response to Old French romance as it was available in the thirteenth century (orally, at least), partly in response to a growing interest in ‘folk subjects’ as attested by the collections of vernacular proverbs and popular lore.

Abstract:
Proverbs convey an idealized and conventional art of living that is generally referred to as popular wisdom. Made of stereotypes and pretending to shape our behaviour, this popular wisdom has been strongly contested by the surrealist poets Paul Éluard and Benjamin Péret in their „152 proverbes mis au goût du jour”. On the one hand, this article analyzes the rhetorical modalities of this contest. These consist in a parody discourse that distorts traditional proverbs, while preserving their phraseology. On the other hand, this study examines how these parodic manipulations deconstruct the stereotypical art of living conveyed by the proverbial genre through different processes (trivialization, pejoration, contradiction, etc.). It also shows that the work of undermining carried out by Éluard and Péret on proverbs leads to the proclamation of a new art of living based on the poetic liberation of language, the refusal of authority and the reign of imagination.

Abstract:
This chapter begins with Coke’s and Selden’s speeches on liberty of person in the wake of the Five Knights’ Case (1627). Here civil law and supra-legal principles, or the national and the universal, converge, in a way running parallel to the period’s engagements of the romance tradition, which historically claims common cultural ground for Western Christendom but becomes dominated in the seventeenth century by narrower concerns. This shift is visible in John Barclay’s Argenis, effecting an unlikely marriage of romance and raison d’état. That proves to be an influential model in the prose romances of the 1650s—considered most closely are Theophania and Sir Percy Herbert’s Cloria and Narcissus. In a way recalling Arendt’s remarks on nomos, likely a response to Schmitt, these romances of the 1650s solidify the social ties of a disempowered elite while displaying a unique and fleeting posture of openness on the question of sovereignty.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces two popular romance novels (romanzi rosa) by Luciana Peverelli. Published while the occupation of Rome was unfolding, La lunga notte (1944; The Long Night) and its sequel Sposare lo straniero (1946; Marry the Foreigner) treat those traumas using a hybrid form that results in arguably the earliest Italian fictional Holocaust narrative that represents the deportation of the Jews to camps and the Fosse Ardeatine massacre; unconscious of how its own anti-Semitic logic facilitates the deportation that it condemns, La lunga notte’s paradoxical treatment of Judaism aligns with dominant postwar Italian attitudes. Set during the Allied occupation, the sequel argues for the hybrid genre’s privileged position in narrating the transition back to “reality,” when the heroines become war brides, an often-vilified figure who proves an adept intercultural intermediary. Challenging preconceptions of the romance, La lunga notte and Sposare lo straniero alter the requisite happy ending for those “redeemed” by marriage.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the relation between Verb Second and the derivation of topics in a comparative and diachronic perspective. It is argued that internally merged topics in Germanic led to the generalization of the V2 rule, while the predominant presence of externally merged topics in Romance led to the loss of the V2 rule in declarative clauses. The paper is based on a fine-grained analysis of the C-domain as envisaged by the cartographic approach (cf. Rizzi 1997), a detailed analysis of topic types and their syntactic properties as well as on a novel approach to V2 that proves to be more flexible than the traditional EPP-based to the V2 rule.

Abstract:
The world has changed rapidly in recent months as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all areas of socio-economic life. The crisis directed, in a first phase, the efforts of the whole society in the direction of ensuring the public health, and later also towards the economic recovery by resuming the human activities. In this context, housing has been a point of stability and a starting point for all efforts, and access to adequate housing has proven its importance for ensuring the health and well-being of the population. The purpose of the research is to highlight a series of housing affordability problems pre-existent and new problems arising from the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the housing sector in Romania. The present research highlights pre-existing problems in the general picture of housing at the national level, how these issues condition access to adequate and affordable housing, the emergence of new risk groups in the population in terms of access to housing, highlights the impact of the pandemic on the ability of households to bear housing costs and proves that housing insecurity is exacerbated by the effects of the crisis. The analyzes used data provided by the National Institute of Statistics, Eurostat, the Quality of Life Research Institute as well as reports prepared by specialized European organizations.

Abstract:
The social and linguistic profile of Romania after 1989 has been increasingly multicultural. This phenomenon does not only occur in specific states. Definite and defining intrusions of other cultures in various countries in Europe and on other continents are diagnostic of the existential shape of humankind in the third millennium. The trend has altered all the social sectors in which it became manifest, transforming even, or especially, the level of language. One could claim, without it being an overstatement, that all the speakers of a nation or most of them use an “impure” language, as they “stain” the given historical language with lexical “intruders” without which communication would be suspended. To be a valid speaker of the new millennium one should think, speak and behave multiculturally. We are corporate employees of words, the interface between the conservation of locality and the expansion of multitasking. We behave like citizens of the cyberspace not only when working on online platforms, but also in our day-to‑day existence, which proves that we are three-dimensional individuals. This paper aims at observing and quantifying (qualitatively and quantitatively) the extent to which multiculturalism has infiltrated a certain field of material life in Baia Mare on the onomastic level, i.e. restaurants, as outlets for assumedly gourmet food. The article explores whether one can talk about pure onymic multiculturalism (determining the degree of coexistence of lexical oppositions) or whether the national avatar was eliminated and the borrowed element in the name has been established unequivocally (the novel element). The author uses the methodology specific to linguistics, onomastics and cultural studies.

Abstract:
The paper explores the potential benefits of using Blended Learning (face-to-face and online) to teach languages to students at university level by analyzing the experience gained at “Gr. T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi in partnership with EuroEd Foundation Iasi, within the wider context summarized below. While many Romanian students today begin their bachelor studies with a relatively high level of competence in at least one foreign language (most commonly English), it is important to acknowledge that this is not always the case. In fact, students may feel at a disadvantage compared to their colleagues and objectively have less chances to access scholarships etc. specifically due to not having had the same opportunities to learn a foreign language such as English in their past. Therefore, in order to provide all medical students with equal chances at academic and professional success, some may require additional opportunities in transversal areas such as language learning, ICT etc. For example, medical universities in Romania attempt to provide all their students with compulsory language instruction in their first year(s), making it optional later on. However, putting together groups with students of similar language levels and needs often proves to be an impossible administrative mission, the typical outcome of that being mixed-level groups of students who more or less want to study the same language. In our case, a solution was found in order to provide adequate additional support to students whose entry language level was less than B2 / independent according to the Common European Framework of Reference. For the past two academic years, the face-to-face language instruction of junior students in Medicine, Nursing and Nutrition according to the core curriculum has been supplemented with optional activities using the ELSTI language training package online. The ELSTI platform (http://www.eurobusinesslanguageskills.net) is the main result of a series of EU-funded projects involving EuroEd Foundation also from Iasi and, as it stands today, it provides courses of English, French, German, Italian and Spanish for levels A2 and B1. All the courses, sub-units, explanations, situations, tasks, tests and self-assessment tools are calibrated to fit the CEFR descriptors while serve real life communicative functions set in a business context promoting cultural awareness. In addition, they are accompanied by personal development and motivational modules. While students were recommended the content, instruction and activities related to the language they were studying in class, all students had free access to all the other online language courses as well. The online work was student-centered in the sense that, once logged on, students could decide which units/exercises to solve in which order, the entire process being driven by the students’ own goals, interests and preferences. As is turned out, this form of increased flexibility and controlled freedom deliberately embedded in the courses added significantly to some students’ motivation to continue well beyond set requirements, as well as to their overall enjoyment, autonomy and empowerment. Concurrently, the classroom experience could be targetted more clearly towards teaching and learning English for medical purposes. The statistical analysis takes into consideration attempts, times and scores for using grammar and vocabulary support independently, solving reading and dialogue-based tasks, playing games and simulations, etc. by each user, thus providing insight into how the students chose to engage with the different e-contents and instructions within and beyond the language they were studying in class. The quantitative data to which we are referring in this paper has been collected from over 500 students at UMF Iasi and indicates how popular, difficult, motivating etc. the various types of online language exercises are among students for whom language is not their main interest but rather a vehicle. Nevertheless, the online activity reports contain ample evidence of how these students have valued this opportunity of gaining skills in transversal areas such as foreign languages, but also cultural awareness, personal development and ICT.
