Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to present literary translations from Ukrainian to Romanian in the context of Romanian-Ukrainian intercultural relations. The specificity of translation is analyzed as a special type of interlingual and intercultural communication. It also considers the role of the translator as facilitator of the connections between different societies and cultures, highlighting the main translators from the contemporary period of Ukrainian literature in Romania, as well as the literary translations from the 90s to the 20th century, which have generated literary reviews and studies in the Romanian cultural space. In the same context for the lack of a complete image of the Ukrainian literature were given explanations in the consciousness of the Romanian reader. The article did not address the topic of the Romanian literary critics of the Ukrainian literature, who wrote works of great significance for the Ukrainian literature, but most of them are in Ukrainian, thus they did not contribute to a better knowledge of the Ukrainian literature among the Romanian readers. Starting from the idea that the Ukrainians over time had a different image in the eyes of the Romanians, from negative stereotypes, to better understanding the Ukrainian problems after the events on the Maidan and targeting of the Ukrainian problems by the Romanian media. Thus Ukraine became interesting for Romanians, hence the increased interest in literary translation, as one of the bridges that make the connection between the two cultures. The translation also facilitates the reader’s understanding and perception regarding the Ukrainian nation and the culture of the Ukrainian people.

Abstract:
Literature transfer is the focal point of several areas of research, including literary studies, cultural studies, sociology, political studies, and economics. Thus, the process of cultural transfer through literature and translation is vivid and multi-layered. Based on the economic, diplomatic and political influences that govern the transfer of culture, this paper aims to study if and how the transfer of Chinese literature in Romania was influenced by these factors. The overall objective is to provide a descriptive scenario of the Romanian literary translations from Chinese from the standpoint of cultural reception. We propose, thus, an extended approach to cultural translations, namely an approach to the sociology of translations, to their cultural, linguistic, literary, political, and economic reception. A series of interviews with the agents involved in and responsible for the translation, introduction and dissemination of Chinese literature in Romania were conducted, among whom: Romanian translators of Chinese literary works, representatives of Romanian publishing houses, former Romanian diplomats engaged in China-oriented activities, representatives of the Department of Culture of the Embassy of the PRC in Romania, members of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing and directors of Confucius Institutes in Romania. With a qualitative exploratory approach, the interviews investigate the role of the agents in the cultural exchange between China and Romania and their influence on cultural, political and economic relations between the two countries. The specific objectives are to determine the factors of ideological, economic, and political influence and their implications in the translation of Chinese books into Romania, and to identify the characteristics of the cultural reception of Chinese literature in Romania.

Abstract The article analyses the impact of the Strega Prize on Romanian translations from 1990 to the present day, following the political shift of 1989 that gave rise to a reconfiguration of the cultural sphere. Since the 1990s, Romania has also entered the free market and started to align more with the international publishing landscape, especially regarding translations from a wide range of literature, including Italian. The research avails itself of the constantly updated online database Scrittori italiani tradotti in romeno: 1990-2024 (Italian Writers Translated into Romanian: 1990-2024), created and edited by Afrodita Carmen Cionchin, published in the bilingual intercultural journal “Orizzonti culturali italo-romeni” (“Italo-Romanian Cultural Horizons”). The analysis suggests that the impact of Italy’s most prestigious literary prize on Romanian translations has various facets, from the immediate effect to the spotlight effect to the trailblazing effect for further publications, and to the reverb effect, as well as writers present in Romanian translation with titles other than the book that won the Strega Prize. Consequently, eighteen writers who have won the Strega Prize are available in Romanian translation.

Reading a translation is not a single text-related experience or event. Behind every translation, there is an entire historically developed ecosystem of many other translations. This paper focuses on the translational ecosystem of the Romanian translations of the works of Walter Benjamin. This includes 15 translations, 13 translators, 10 publishers and 1 author: Benjamin. These figures articulate a first, clearly heterogeneous, irregular, perhaps even slightly chaotic image of the Romanian translation corpus of Walter Benjamins’ works. At the same time, we argue, this corpus is to be regarded less as an archipelago of scattered texts than as a constellation of translations. This constellation may be lacking a central translation project but features, nevertheless, an internal coherence. Based on the internal logic of this text formation and the transfer practice behind it, the analysis attempts to outline its position within contemporary Romanian „Translationskultur“, as defined within the German theoretical tradition.

Abstract Imre József Balázs is a Hungarian poet, literary critic, editor and literary historian from Romania. His main subject of interest and research area is the Hungarian avant-garde from Romania. His research and work prove his attachment to Romanian literature as well - especially with the avant-garde. For example, he deals with Gellu Naum’s poems for children and their translation. Thus, he fulfils the role of a mediator between Hungarian and Romanian literature not only through his studies and academic papers written in Romanian, but also through his contributions to the appearance of Hungarian poets in literary anthologies written in Romanian language. Furthermore, he plays an important role in publishing the Hungarian translations of Romanian poetry, thus becoming a mediator between the Hungarian and Romanian cultures.

AbstractTranslation has always been important for religion as a way of preaching God's word. The first Romanian translations of religious texts, including the first (although incomplete) translation of the Bible, date from the sixteenth century. In this early period of Romanian writing, Romanian translators encountered several problems in conveying the meaning of these texts of a great complexity. Some of the difficulties were due to the source texts available in the epoch, others to the ideal of literal translation, to the principle of legitimacy or to the relatively poor development of Romanian language which limited the translators' options. The present study focuses on the causes and purposes for which lexical items of Hungarian origin interweave old Romanian translations. In this epoch, Hungarian influence was favoured by a complex of political, legal, administrative and socioculturel factors, sometimes even forced by these circumstances. On the one hand, given the premises of vivid contacts between Romanians and Hungarians in the regions where the old Romanian translations (or their originals) can be located, a number of Hungarian loanwords of folk origin penetrated these texts. On the other hand, when using Hungarian sources, translators have imported useful source language caiques and loanwords, which have enriched Romanian language.

"The Evolution of the Compound Nouns in German Titles of Some of the Tales by the Brothers Grimm and in Their Romanian Translations. The titles of the tales written by the Brothers Grimm have suffered a number of changes throughout the years. The evolution of these titles shows the fact that there was a growing need for understanding them, the Brothers Grimm thus introducing compound nouns in many of their titles. This phenomenon can be seen even in Romanian translations; the titles have been translated differently because of these compound nouns, which are atypical for the Romanian language. The difficulty of translating these titles has led to the use of two distinct translation methods, the adaptive one and the transfer one. The current article will explore these modifications in the case of selected titles with the purpose of establishing the most explicit title in German and also the best translation of a title in Romanian. Abstract:
The paper presents different aspects of the translation work of Romanians from the territory of the present day Vojvodina (Banat) during the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, up until the Second World War. The translation work in administration, education, religious institutions, and primarily in journalism and literature, has played an important role in the multicultural society of Banat. Various languages, cultures, traditions and religions interacted and intertwined there, and the society functioned on principles which enabled mutual understanding and cooperative work of all those who lived in Banat, regardless of the differences. The first translations in the Romanian language, primarily from German and Serbian, appeared in the 18th century, for the needs of state administration, education or religious work. The translations became more diverse and of a higher quality thanks to the work of the first elite Romanian intellectuals from the period of the late Enlightenment, the representatives of whom were Paul Iorgovici, Constantin Diaconovici Loga, and Sofronie Ivacicovici. In the 19th century, the translations got new content in the form of publication of multilingual posters, invitations, association rules, monetary instructions, newspaper articles, religious books, but also literary works, among which the most prominent were the translations of Hungarian literary works to the Romanian language, done by the writer and publicist Alexandra Tintariu. In the period between the two World Wars, translation work also gained new content because translations from German and Hungarian to Romanian stopped as the focus was placed on translations from Serbian to Romanian and vice versa.

The second half of the nineteenth century saw a proliferation of translations from romance languages into Romanian as a consequence of the economic and cultural development of the Romanian society. In this context, 1893 saw the publication of the first Romanian translation of De Amicis’s Cuore (Heart): An Italian Schoolboy’s Journal, by Clelia Bruzzesi (1836-1903). The twentieth century brought five other versions, two of them signed by women translators: Sofia Nădejde (1856-1946) in 1916 and Mia Frollo (1885-1962) in 1936. Until recently, Cuore was part of the primary school curriculum in Romania, so the text left a mark on the cultural history of the country. This paper aims to raise awareness of the often neglected translation activity of women and to reveal Bruzzesi, Nădejde and Frollo’s place in society as well their motivations and the public reception of their translations.

Abstract “If you translate long into the machine, the machine translates back into you,” is one of the issues the present article strives to establish and explore qualitatively. I intend to examine the effectiveness and efficiency of machine-assisted translations of significant literary works from a hermeneutical perspective. Essentially, I analyse the output of automated translation platforms such as Google Translate and compare them to human translation. This investigation is valuable in determining whether translators should exercise caution when utilizing translation platforms for culturally rich literary works. Additionally, the article scrutinizes the localisation, cultural, and grammatical coherence of Homer’s The Iliad translated from English to Romanian using the Google Translate platform. The human translations used are rendered into English and Romanian from Greek. As Homer’s Greek remains incomprehensible to the translation platform, we employ a secondary translation technique for a tertiary machine-assisted output. Nonetheless, this approach highlights the serious pitfalls of using translation platforms haphazardly in translation work. This analysis will show how awareness of the machine’s imperfect translation capabilities may, in turn, enhance the human translator’s awareness of what works while translating with the help of a translation application.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to develop a theoretical framework that could account for the problems arising in the translation of oral history interviews. While focusing on literary, economic and technical texts, Translation Studies has neglected the examination of Oral History. In order to fill in this major lacuna in the research literature, I ask two fundamental questions: Which are the linguistic problems and challenges (if any) of such texts in translation? How do these translated oral history interviews articulate the communist experience? I do so to call attention to the mutual benefits that can be gained from such an intersectional approach. To instantiate the case, I translate from Romanian into English transcribed interviews given by three categories of people: those involved in the anti-communist armed resistance in the Carpathian Mountains (extracted from the book Memorialul Durerii: Întuneric şi Lumină, by Lucia Hossu-Longin), political prisoners (Supravieţuitorii: Mărturii din temniţele comuniste ale României, by Raul and Anca Ştef) and King Michael I of Romania (Convorbiri cu Mihai I al României, by Mircea Ciobanu). Importing Portelli’s theoretical framework from the field of Oral History allows me to identify the features of historical interviews (orality, narrative, subjectivity, performativity) and account for their difficulties in translation. However, since the Italian researcher negates the orality of transcribed interviews, I manage to solve this problem by proposing the term ‘fictive orality’ (Koch&Osterreicher) and the triad ‘vividness (repetitions/imagery), immediacy (direct speech), fragmentation (ambiguity/ellipsis)’. Defining thus the orality of my written data, I map out the translational problematics of oral testimonies on communism and contend that fragmentation presents the most difficult challenges in translation. Additionally, my results point at the copious use of repetitions, visual/kinaesthetic/organic images, and direct speech. The findings also confirm the effectiveness of a literal translation given the emphatic role acquired by the linguistic strategies previously mentioned. Conclusively, recommendations are made for proximity to the source text as the translational processs assumes the form of a ‘dialogue’ that the translator has to establish with the original, so that he/she could hear all the participants talking. Hence, I rely on foreignization as an over-arching method, demonstrating its compatibility with Oral History on communism. On the one hand, this strategy captures the cognitive and emotive dimensions of the interviewees’ language of suffering and trauma. In the world of Descriptive Translation Studies, translationese refers to the specific traits that characterise the language used in translations. While translationese has been often investigated to illustrate that translational language is different from non-translational language, scholars have also proposed a set of hypotheses which may characterise such di erences. In the quest for the validation of these hypotheses, embracing corpus-based techniques had a well-known impact in the domain, leading to several advances in the past twenty years. Despite extensive research, however, there are no universally recognised characteristics of translational language, nor universally recognised patterns likely to occur within translational language. This thesis addresses these issues, with a less used approach in the eld of Descriptive Translation Studies, by investigating the nature of translational language from a machine learning perspective. While the main focus is on analysing translationese, this thesis investigates two related sub-hypotheses: simplication and explicitation. To this end, a multilingual learning framework is designed and implemented for the identification of translational language. The framework is modelled as a categorisation task, the learning techniques having the major goal to automatically learn to distinguish between translated and non-translated texts. The second and third major goals of this research are the retrieval of the recurring patterns that are revealed in the process of solving the task of categorisation, as well as the ranking of the most in uential characteristics used to accomplish the learning task. These aims are ful lled by implementing a system that adopts the machine learning methodology proposed in this research. The learning framework proves to be an adaptable multilingual framework for the investigation of the nature of translational language, its adaptability being illustrated in this thesis by applying it to the investigation of two languages: Spanish and Romanian. In this thesis, di erent research scenarios and learning models are experimented with in order to assess to what extent translated texts can be diff erentiated from non-translated texts in certain contexts. The findings show that machine learning algorithms, aggregating a large set of potentially discriminative characteristics for translational language, are able to diff erentiate translated texts from non-translated ones with high scores. The evaluation experiments report performance values such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F-measure on two datasets. The present research is situated at the con uence of three areas, more precisely: Descriptive Translation Studies, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, justifying the need to combine these elds for the investigation of translationese and translational hypotheses.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the unusual phenomenon of exile from a frontier land, as it is explored by the work of the Istrian writer Fulvio Tomizza. It deals with the diaspora from Istria, a territory at the intersection of different civilizations – the Italian and the Croat-Slovenian – which has historically shaped a mixture of cultures and languages, remarkable for its hybridity. The massive exile which took place at the end of the Second World War, after the redefinition of the Italo-Yugoslav border, presents original features which, by taking advantage of the narrative tool, overturn traditional parameters attributed to exile. Focusing on Fulvio Tomizza’s novels Materada, La ragazza di Petrovia and L’albero dei sogni, and also on some of his most significant essays, I will seek to outline the specific traits that typify the detachment from one’s own native country. In particular, I shall suggest that identity and idioms are called into question even before characters have left their homeland. In addition, exile begins with a clarification of characters’ sense of belonging, which inevitably leads them to split, making the choice of whether to abandon the home country even more complicated. Once abroad, characters will develop a deep sense of estrangement, dictated by the impossibility of fitting into any other context, which will eventually drive them to a double, parallel, unsuccessful exile. In order to investigate fully the characteristics of Fulvio Tomizza’s exile, I will employ some linguistic postulates to examine the bilingualism and diglossia of the origins. The theoretical approaches of Edward Said, Sigmund Freud and Julia Kristeva will be used to inform my analysis of the more subtle mechanisms which rule exile, starting with doubleness and examining the dynamics which commonly characterize the exilic experience, including those in relation to the elaboration of the narrative itself. The novelty of this work lies in its approach to exile without preconceived arguments, which run the risk of limiting the analysis of the topic, and in the exploration of the most crucial aspects of a frontier land shaken by a territorial redefinition. This thesis also aims to reallocate the figure of Fulvio Tomizza, who has as yet not been investigated in any significant manner, most often being neglected or misunderstood. The aim is also to highlight one of the most European writers of the Italian second Novecento and his relationship with Eastern European languages and literatures.

The analysis focuses on six recent productions: Stuffand Dough (2001), The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) and Aurora (2010) by Cristi Puiu, 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006) and Police, Adjective (2010) by Corneliu Porumboiu, and The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu (2010) by Andrei Ujica, breaking down the individual authorial characteristics and thematic and stylistic concerns of each filmmaker and contextualizing them within the larger history of Romanian film, as well as the trajectories of international art cinema.

Esta tesis analiza los retos y dificultades de carácter léxico-semántico que supone la traducción literaria de la variante coloquial del español peninsular actual al rumano. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, se enmarca en los estudios descriptivos de traducción centrados en el producto, a través del cual se pueden obtener datos relativos al proceso. La investigación se basa en teorías traductológicas orientadas hacia el receptor (Hatim y Mason, 1995 [1990]; Nord, 1997), que hacen hincapié en el papel del traductor como mediador intercultural. El enfoque pragmático-funcional que es adoptado tiene en cuenta teorías y disciplinas complementarias como la teoría del polisistema, la estética de la recepción y el estadio actual de la retórica contrastiva, así como los numerosos trabajos dedicados al español coloquial. El análisis de un amplio corpus literario confirma la hipótesis inicial, según la cual la traducción de un texto literario coloquial presenta a menudo lagunas o pérdidas semánticas o pragmáticas que están relacionadas con las tres categorías de normas formuladas por Toury (1995, 2000), lagunas o pérdidas que se hacen especialmente patentes en la combinación español > rumano. Se desprende, más concretamente, del análisis, cuál de las tres categorías influye más en la traducción y cómo podrían evitarse las deficiencias constatadas en un futuro. Se identifican y describen los principales fenómenos léxicos de carácter coloquial con las estrategias de traducción correspondientes, para acto seguido investigar las causas externas y los mecanismos cognitivos que las han generado, evaluar las soluciones y la gravedad de los errores y, en la medida de lo posible, proponer soluciones alternativas o recomendaciones. Asimismo, se formulan conclusiones con respecto a la sistematicidad de las tendencias traductoras desde la perspectiva de Toury sobre las leyes de traducción.<br>This thesis analyses the lexico-semantic challenges and difficulties posed by the literary translation of colloquial variation from today’s peninsular Spanish to Romanian. From the methodological perspective, it is a product (corpus)-based descriptive research through which data related to the translation process can be obtained. The research is based on receptor-oriented translation theories (Hatim & Mason, 1995 [1990], Nord 1997 etc.) underlying the translator´s intercultural mediator role. The pragmatic-functional approach adopted takes into account complementary disciplines and theories such as the polysystem theory, the aesthetic of the reception, the current state of play of the contrastive rhetoric, as well as numerous works dealing with colloquial Spanish. The analysis of a vast literary corpus confirms the initial hypothesis, according to which the translation of a colloquial literary text often involves semantic or pragmatic lacks and losses which are due to the three types of norms proposed by Toury (1995, 2000); those lacks and losses become especially noticeable in the Spanish-Romanian linguistic combination. The analysis will specifically reveal which of those three types of norms is more influential and how some identified translation shortcomings could be avoided in the future. Therefore, the main colloquial lexical phenomena with their corresponding translation strategies will be identified and described; subsequently, the external causes and cognitive mechanisms leading to those strategies will be studied, an assessment of the translation solutions and the gravity of errors will be carried out and alternative solutions and recommendations will be proposed, if applicable. Furthermore, conclusions regarding the systematic nature of the translation tendencies according to Toury´s translation laws will be drawn up.

À commencer avec les premiers contacts présentés dans le Chapitre 1, jusqu'à l'essor des relations franco-roumaines, nous avons restitué par cette thèse une image sur la manière dans laquelle a été bâtie et développée l'histoire commune des deux peuples, de sorte que nous pouvons parler finalement du franco - roumanisme en tant que phénomène d'ampleur. Le document sur lequel se basent nos études est la première édition du Règlement Organique, rédigé en alphabet cyrillique, mais la variante qui nous a été très utile est la variante bilingue, roumaine - française, préservée dans les Annales Parlementaires de la Roumanie, 1890. Elle a été une source très riche d'exploitation lexicale, stylistique, morphosyntaxique et de la traduction, aspects abordés dans le Chapitre 3. Celui-ci, nous l'avons structuré en deux parties : théorique, comprenant les principes de deux grands noms de la stylistique, Charles Bally, représentant suisse et Tudor Vianu, représentant roumain et des théoriciens de la traduction parmi lesquels : Georges Mounin, Marianne Lederer, John Catford, Henri Meschonnic, Algirdas-Julien Greimas, Eugene Nida, etc. et pratique, avec des analyses contrastives franco-roumaines, sur des exemples de la variante roumaine – le texte source et la variante française – le texte cible. The document that constitutes the basis of our studies is the first edition of the Romanian Constitutional Texts, written in Cyrillic Alphabet, but the version that has been very useful to us is the bilingual French-Romanian version preserved in the 1890 Romanian Parliamentary Annuaries. This has been a very rich source for our lexical, stylistic, morphological, syntactical and translation analysis, aspects presented in Chapter 3. We have structured it into two sections: a theoretical one, having in center two important names in stylistics, Swiss and Romanian representatives, Charles Bally and Tudor Vianu and different translation theoreticians such as: Georges Mounin, Marianne Lederer, John Catford, Henri Meschonnic, Algirdas-Julien Greimas, Eugene Nida, etc.; the second part is a practical one, with contrastive French-Romanian analysis of the two texts: the Romanian text (the source-text) and the French text (the target-text). Dario Fo (Nobelpreis 1997) ist einer der herausragendsten Erneuerer des italienischen Theaters des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ein Überblick über die wichtigsten Stationen seines künstlerischen Schaffens zeugt zunächst von Fos stetem Bemühen um innovative Ansätze in Bezug auf Theaterkonzeption und –praxis: immer gilt es, sich von den Konventionen des literarischen, bürgerlichen, subventionierten, weitgehend passiv rezipierten Theaters abzugrenzen und das Theater für das Publikum wieder ganzheitlich erfahrbar zu machen. Doch nicht selten geraten er und seine Truppe dabei in Konflikt mit den herrschenden politischen und gesellschaftlichen Umständen. Dies trifft auch auf sein Stück "Morte accidentale di un anarchico" (1970) zu, dessen Analyse im Zentrum dieser Arbeit steht. Ein realhistorischer Fall, der "Fall Pinelli" (bzw. "la strage di Piazza Fontana") 1969, diente Fo als Grundlage seiner sehr zeitnah entstandenen grotesken Farce, die aufgrund ihrer politischen Brisanz für Aufruhr sorgte und die auch im Ausland bis heute immer wieder auf den Spielplänen zu finden ist. Die Arbeit geht daher nicht nur auf die Produktion, Inszenierung und Rezeption des Stücks in Italien ein, sondern nimmt auch die Adaptationen und deren Rezeption in Frankreich und Deutschland in den Blick, wobei die italienspezifische Ausrichtung von Fos Theater (Rekurs auf Traditionen des italienischen Volkstheaters, Verarbeitung (tages)politischen Geschehens etc.) eine besondere Herausforderung für die fremdsprachige Bearbeitung des Stückes und seine Inszenierung darstellt. Neben den produktions- und rezeptionsästhetischen Grundbedingungen des Textes von Dario Fo werden in diesem Zusammenhang auch Spezifika der Bühnenübersetzung beleuchtet und Alternativen hierzu aufgezeigt, die auch bereits von Fos Truppe genutzt werden.<br>Dario Fo (Premio Nobel 1997) è uno dei drammaturghi e capocomici più innovatori del teatro italiano del ‘900. Verranno mostrate le tappe più importanti del suo percorso artistico che attestano una ricerca incessante di approcci innovativi per la concezione e la prassi teatrali: una lotta acerrima contro le convenzioni del teatro letterario, borghese, sovvenzionato e fruito in modo passivo. Comunque, cercando di ristabilire l’evento teatrale come esperienza olistica, Fo e la sua compagnia si ritrovano spesso in pieno conflitto con la realtà socio-politica e i suoi rappresentanti. Era anche questo il caso del pezzo "Morte accidentale di un anarchico" (1970) di cui questo lavoro presenta un’analisi. Scritta poco dopo la strage di Piazza Fontana (dicembre 1969) e quindi a quell’epoca di scottante attualità politica, questa farsa grottesca fece sorgere grandi tumulti e rimane finora uno dei pezzi più rappresentati, anche all’estero. Pertanto, questo lavoro contempla non solo la produzione, l’allestimento e la ricezione del pezzo in Italia, ma tiene anche conto degli adattamenti e della loro ricezione in Francia e in Germania. Verrà mostrata la sfida per gli adattamenti stranieri che risulta dall’italianità del teatro di Fo (ricorso alla tradizione del teatro popolare italiano, trattamento di fatti socio-politici quotidiani etc.). In questo contesto verranno spiegati anche elementi specifici della traduzione per la scena e indicata qualche alternativa che anche la compagnia di Fo già utilizza.

This thesis defines ‘classical lyricism’ as any mode of appropriation of Greek and Latin monodic lyric whereby a poet may develop a wider discourse on poetry. Assuming classical lyricism as an internal category of enquiry, my thesis investigates the presence of Sappho and Catullus as lyric archetypes in Italian and North American poetry of the 20th century. The analysis concentrates on translations and appropriations of Sappho and Catullus in four case studies: Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912) and Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968) in Italy; Ezra Pound (1885-1972) and Anne Carson (b. 1950) in North America. I first trace the poetic reception of Sappho and Catullus in the oeuvres of the four authors separately. I define and evaluate the role of the respective appropriations within each author’s work and poetics. I then contextualise the four case studies within the Italian and North American literary histories. Finally, through the new outlook afforded by the comparative angle of this thesis, I uncover some of the hidden threads connecting the different types of classical lyricism transnationally. The thesis shows that the course of classical lyricism takes two opposite aesthetic directions in Italy and in North America. Moreover, despite the two aesthetic trajectories diverging, I demonstrate that the four poets’ appropriations of Sappho and Catullus share certain topical characteristics. Three out of four types of classical lyricism are defined by a preference for Sappho’s and Catullus’ lyrics which deal with marriage rituals and defloration, patterns of death and rebirth, and solar myths. They stand out as the epiphenomena of the poets’ interest in the anthropological foundations of the lyric, which is grounded in a philosophical function associated with poetry as a quest for knowledge. I therefore ultimately propose that ‘classical lyricism’ may be considered as an independent historical and interpretative category of the classical legacy.

Cinka is a prime example of a Romani cultural translator and an excellent representative of Romani musical intermediaries who integrated their musical activities into broadly defined translative practices. As a successful female Romani musician, Panna Cinka was selected as the focus of this chapter, but this text also argues that Romani musicians in general relied on their translative skills and excelled in translating musical styles and genres and, in doing so, their acts of cultural translation transcended the boundaries of a semiotic system.

This chapter focuses on the history of Dostoevsky’s academic and intellectual reception in Romania. Relying primarily on the seminal work of scholar Dinu Pillat (1921-1975), my discussion begins with the pre-Communist period, a milieu dominated by nationalist and religious ideas. I move next to the Communist period, during which, after a couple of decades where Dostoevsky was virtually absent, a series of scholars praised the author and created robust scholarship. Following a chronological framework, this chapter also examines how literary and theological interpretations of Dostoevsky changed in Romania after the fall of the totalitarian regime. Analysing Dostoevsky’s reception in Romania shows how his work gains in meaning and context relative to the culture or society that his writings inform. We also see how his own political and religious views made him attractive for some and problematic for others. The Romanian experience shows that genuine philosophical value transcends political interests.

While cross-lingual manual and automatic fact-checking are important, and Machine Translation (MT) is among the methods, used for them, there are no orienting guidelines, nor evaluation metrics that could assist with determining which MT engine would be appropriate for such a task. This article presents an evaluation approach that fills a gap by providing a numerical estimate of Machine Translation (MT) engines’ suitability for translating texts for cross-lingual claim matching and fact-checking. The approach focuses on elements important for the task, such as the correct translation of Named Entities (NEs), while making others less important (for example the style and the fluency of the translations). Our contributions include an MT error classification, evaluation guidelines, formulas to obtain a normalized numerical score, and a Python script for calculating it. The numerical weights of the score’s components can be modified, which allows flexibility, reflecting what is possible for the subsequent stage. We also present the results of two experiments in which we apply our approach (with a choice of weights) and determine the most suitable freely accessible MT tools for translating Bulgarian and Romanian news articles and social media texts into English. Our results show that eTranslation is the best MT tool for Romanian-English translation direction, while the HuggingFace Helsinki Opus MT model is best for Bulgarian-English. The aim of this paper is to highlight the use of online dictionaries for translation work. It is the intention of the authors to explore, at the example of the Romanian-Serbian and the Serbian-Romanian online dictionary, to what extent such dictionaries can be helpful, and to point, at a certain corpus of words, the performance and the quality of the translation. Bearing all that in mind, the corpus of 150 words devided into three categories will be tested: "easy" words - that are used in everyday speech (total of 50), " medium-heavy" words, which are not as represented in everyday speech (total of 50) and "hard" words from various areas of professional terminology - economics, law, philology, informatics, medicine, agriculture etc. (total of 50). Each word will be, using the two dictionaries, translated from the Romanian into the Serbian language and vice versa - from the Serbian into the Romanian language, and the attention will be placed on the "recognition" and "identification" of the lexeme i.e. whether a certain word is going to be or not transleted into both languages, whether the translations are identical or not, whether dictionaries "offer" the same number of synonyms and alternatives, and if and when that translation is missing. The research results will be presented statistically, and the success rate for each of the abovementioned items will be calculated. The online dictionaries are very popular. This is good tool, as a supplement, for elearning and thesaurus for learners.

The current paper takes a comparative look at a selection of Japanese proverbs and their translation into English to their Romanian equivalents. The English translation belongs to David Galeff, the author of the book ‘Japanese Proverbs. Wit and Wisdom’ from which stems the selection of proverbs which are the object of the current analysis. The Romanian translation applies two methods. It tries to find an equivalent in Romanian, both in terms of wit i.e. wording or sense and in terms of wisdom i.e. meaning or reference. As such the two perspectives of analysis are semantic and pragmatic. The aim is firstly to find an equivalent in meaning and reference to a relevant wisdom inspired by reality and life. If such an equivalent is not found, alternative translations are attempted using other translation procedures, such as modulation or even adaptation. The theoretical framework used is the one Vinay and Dalbernet outlined in their ‘Comparative Stylistics of French and English: A Methodology for Translation’. This is a translational attempt to look towards the East and towards the West and see how different and how similar they are in the way they understand life and express that understanding. The aim of the analysis is to see to what extent it can identify corresponding ways of wording or equivalent forms of expression in Romanian for the wit and the wisdom incapsulated in the Japanese proverbs, via the English language

Abstract:
Research on old Romanian texts, religious or non-religious translations, original writings underlying acts of culture or administrative records, documentary sources authored by Romanians or foreigners (missionaries or mere travellers fascinated by various aspects of Romanian space) brings to the foreground a significant number of toponyms for anyone interested in this onomastic variety. The toponyms in question mainly include names of settlements, provinces, and countries, as well as names of important landforms, most of which are real and can be located. Often recorded as phonetic variants linked to different geographical areas or stages in the evolution of language or influenced by the graphical form of their source and one’s knowledge of the Romanian language, thus with morphological and lexical structures determined by the adaptation, translation or calque of a toponym from a foreign language, many place names recorded are linked to the same referent. Therefore, they are genuine toponymic synonyms. Depending on the type of source, place names in old Romanian texts illustrate a model or cultural attitude, while they may also provide useful information regarding the administrative constraints manifested in specific historical ages or in several provinces of Dacoromanian space.

Abstract:
This paper aims at being a linguistic and discursive approach to the translation of proper names, having as support the novel The Carpathian Castle by Jules Verne. The analysis will look at the techniques used in the translation of the proper names in the aforementioned novel, focusing on the bilingual and multicultural assimilation between Romanian and Hungarian. On the one hand, this assimilation determines the phonetic changes which occur as a result of the translation of proper names and draws attention to the uncertain categorial status of proper names, given the fact that they may be considered to function as appellatives. On the other hand, based on the assimilation between Romanian and Hungarian, the paper will examine the choices made by the author upon translating proper names, especially toponyms, from Romanian into Hungarian and German (see, for instance, Klausenburg and Kolosvar for Cluj(-Napoca), Hermanstadt for Sibiu etc.). Last but not least, the study analyses the references established by proper names, as well as the idea of class/nickname and the metonymic use of proper names by means of translation.

Abstract:
Culturemes are the markers of the source culture, which can reach the reader in the target language only through the ability of the translator, who must, in fact, be a great connoisseur of the most hidden cultural details. For the transposition of a foreign culture into a new culture, for a proper communication between them, a loan is needed, retrieval and processing of information so that it is accepted. The motivation behind this study is to provide an overview of how to approach culturemes in the translation of works of contemporary Chinese literature in Romanian, works characterized by great linguistic and extra-linguistic generosity. In order to achieve this goal, we followed the stages of identifying the culturemes from thirty-one Chinese contemporary novels translated in Romanian; followed by creating a corpus based on fourteen categories and five equivalence methods to ensure the cultural equivalence, coherence and homogeneity of Chinese works recreated for the Romanian reader. Finally, we performed an in-depth study of a selection of culturemes from each category, with the aim of showing their distribution in the Romanian translation of Chinese fiction. The study intends to provoke but also to help raise the awareness that translations are not only transpositions (by this we mean moving from one linguistic register to another without operating the text as part of a cultural whole, approaching it externally to all of its sources of influence from the culture in which it has been created) of a work in another language, but they have the primary role of enriching knowledge about one's culture, civilization, literature – i.e. China’s cultural heritage for the present study. Culturally-aware literary translations are the most effective and most stable manner of intercultural exchange, of international prosperity of a culture, of understanding and acknowledging the cultural specifics of one nation. The intertextual references – the culturemes – studied, are part, as will be presented, of all cultural spheres, from those denoting the daily life of the Chinese, the food and basic needs, to those denoting holidays, toponymy, units of measurement, history, but also those that are politically motivated, while also spiritual, subtle, erudite, which only close study, extensive knowledge and diligent work can drive the translator to find and transfer them to the target reader.

Abstract:
Both the emergence of the pandemic and lack of knowledge and/or time needed to translate texts related to this topic brought about an increased interest in analyzing Neural Machine Translation (NMT) performance. This study aims to identify and analyze lexical and semantic errors of language aspects that appear in medical texts translated by Google Translate from English into Romanian. The data used for investigation comprises official prospects of 5 vaccines that were approved to be used against the current coronavirus. The focus is on the lexical and semantic errors, as researchers state that these errors made by Machine Translation have the highest frequency compared to morphological or syntactic errors. Moreover, the lexical errors may affect the meaning, the message, and may easily lead to mistranslation, misunderstanding and, therefore, misinformation. The texts to be analyzed are collected from official websites and translated using Google Translate and Google Languages Tools. From the data analyzed, there are 22 lexical and semantic errors that are approached through descriptive methodology. By examining types of errors in translation from English into Romanian and analyzing the potential causes of errors, the results will be used to illustrate the quality and accuracy of Google Translate when translating public health information from English into Romanian, to observe how much the message is affected by the error, in order to sharpen up linguistic awareness. The results of the study can ultimately help improve of the quality of NMT in terms of better lexical selection and attempt to give inputs as a contribution for a more adequate translation into Romanian by Google Machine Translation.

Abstract:
The main idea is that there are two types of translation: faithful, as close as possible to the requirements of the original, and free, interpretable, with an increased dose of subjectivity. The thesis is illustrated based on some translations in which this typology is foreshadowed. Translations from Chinese and Italian poetry were used. In the case of the first translations, many more English translations were used than those made in Romanian. Faithful translations are usually made by philologists translators, the second – by poets as translators. Some observations denote that some poets are inclined to innovate, to transform the original, and this transfiguration can lead to the creation of a new poetic language in the target language. For example, on the one hand, Ezra Pound even accompanied his translations with a specific remark "after Li Po" to ward off accusations of overly loose interpretation of the original text, on the other hand, translations help the American poet to invent imagery.
