Abstract: This study reads the novel Grande Sertão: Veredas and the influences of the pictorial art in the composition of its narrative. From the author’s records, found in the material filed in the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (Institute of Brazilian Studies) and in Guimarães Rosa’s appreciation for painting, we present the relations between first-person narrative and color variations in the novel. Those plays on light and shadows helped us to read the intricate dubiousness that rules the life, violence and sexuality of Riobaldo. Keywords: Grande Sertão: Veredas; light and shadow; painting; doubt.

Abstract:
In 1990, the Institute for Historical and Socio-Political Studies of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party was closed, since the Party was dissolved by the Romanian Revolution. Similar institutions had existed in all countries belonging to the Soviet bloc. This Institute was founded in 1951 under the name of the Party History Institute, and modelled on the Marx-Lenin-Engels Institute in Moscow. Since then, it served the Communist Party in producing thousands of books and journals on the history of the Party and of Romania, following Party orders. Previous research has portrayed the Institute as a loyal executioner of the Party’s will, negating the agency of its history-writers in influencing the duties of the Institute. However, the recent opening of the Institute’s archive has shown that a number of internal and previously obscured dynamics impacted on its activities. This book is dedicated to the study of the Party History Institute, of the history-writers employed there, and of the narratives they produced. By studying the history-writers and their host institution, this study re-contextualizes the historiography produced under Communist rule by analysing the actual conditions under which it was written: the interrelation between dynamics of control and the struggle for resources, power and positions play a fundamental role in this history. This is the first scholarly inquiry about a highly controversial institute that struggled in order to follow the constantly shifting Party narrative canon, while competing formaterial resources with rival Party and academic institutions. The main actors in this study are the history-writers: Party veterans, young propagandists and educated historians, in conflicting networks and groups, struggled in order to gain access to the limited resources and positions provided by the Party, and in order to survive the political changes imposed by the leadership. By doing so they succeed, on many occasions, to influence the activities of the Institute.

Abstract:
In the eleventh century the arrival of the Turks from Central Asia resulted in complex socio-economic and political changes in Upper Mesopotamia (al-Jazīra), Diyār Rūm (Asia Minor) and part of Syria (Diyār Shām). The social, cultural, military and economic life of the Turks intertwined with the native culture and heritage of Greeks, Armenians and Syrians living in those territories. Having as starting point the multifaceted encounters some of the important issues I am addressing in my thesis are the important trade routes that crossed Turkmen-dominated areas in the late middle ages; monetary traffic; mines and mints in operation under the Turkmen rule. As the history of that multicultural environment can best be understood and explained through the coin evidence, a big part of my project will cover numismatic evidence. In this context, my study will focus on the socio-economic and cultural relations and interactions between the Byzantines, old inhabitants, the Turkish newcomers and the western powers in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in the light of the coins and investigate some questions: Why did the Turkmens issue the Greek and bilingual (Greek-Arabic) coins and seals? Why did the Turkmens borrow images (particularly Byzantine style imagery) from the cultural heritage of the areas they ruled?

Lazayrat, Emmanuel. "La connaissance des choses divines et des choses humaines dans la "iuris prudentia"." Thesis, Lyon 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014LYO30023.

Full text
Abstract:
The iuris prudentia or wisdom in matters of law referred to Roman jurists’ knowledge. Even though its importance was primordial for the history of our law, we only know one and unique definition written in the Institutes and inside Emperor Justinian’s Digest. The original author could be Ulpian who defines this jurisprudence as “the awareness of divine and human things, knowledge of what is just or unjust” (iuris prudentia is diuinarum atque humanarum rerum notitia, iusti atque iniusti scientia). Faced with this definition, many critics have often considered that only the second element (knowledge of what is just and unjust) formed the genuine epistemic criteria of the legal science in question, thus decreasing the duty of the knowledge in divine and human things (diuinarum atque humanarum notitia). On the contrary, we believe that this rerum notitia is not only a simple rhetorical accessory but it refers to an eminent antique knowledge: wisdom. As the ultimate form of the antique intelligence and background, it is not the particular result of a philosophical school or a religious thought. Relating to a generic knowledge, reference to “wisdom” in the definition of iuris prudentia refers to Roman jurist real thinking. Indeed how to allow for abstract rules (regulae) for cases (res) without a spiritual mediation between things and the law? How to operate a choice between just and unjust without a kind of ideational knowledge? Every science needs a theory of knowledge to have a basis for its method. Nevertheless, the iuris prudentia (whose purpose was the law of a city-state which became an empire) was not able to base its way of thinking on a determined philosophical doctrine. Likewise, bequeathed by pagan Roman jurists to Christian Imperators, it could not define itself through the prism of a particular religion. Yet reference to wisdom, the ultimate goal of knowledge, allows neutralizing dogmatic differences. Wisdom in matters of law is the only truly universal antique knowledge. This therefore makes it clear to us why iuris prudentia will continue to have such an influence in posterity and why we still hear echos today of a legal system established by the Romans. [Tr. PHILIPPE JULLIEN]

Ciszek, Océane. "Les relations culturelles franco-roumaines de 1878 à 1965." Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010MON30064.

Full text
Abstract:
This study of Franco-Rumanian cultural relations between 1878 and 1965 is the fruit of research carried out in a number of archive centres (Paris, Nantes, Bucharest and Geneva). Its objective is to understand why France, in its weakened state after the 1870 war, was nevertheless considered by the Romanian elite as its „older sister‟. The author then examines how France used its position to institutionalise its cultural propaganda in „Grand Romania‟ (1919-1939), working alongside Romanians to spread its influence to the annexed territories, and how a cultural agreement was signed in March 1939 despite the hostile environment created by the fascist and Nazi regimes. Relations were unsettled during the final period (1940 to 1965), with the struggle to retain French works of art during the war, the promising exchanges in the immediate after-war years, and the termination of the agreement in 1948 by Soviet-controlled Romania. After a barren period a new agreement was signed in 1965. Throughout the period French culture was enriched by its contact with Romanian intellectuals and artists whose works were integrated into France‟s cultural heritage. The author uses family records to tell the story of her Romanian ancestor, the artist Mihai Simonidi (1872-1933). After arriving in France in 1892, he exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and gained a certain reputation amongst the Paris and Bucharest elite. Well-known for his nudes, marine scenes and murals, some of which can still be seen in buildings in Bucharest, he also painted the portraits of famous French artists and writers and Romanian politicians of the time

Abstract:
1 Abstract The Influence of Roman Legal Institutes in International Public Law Nowadays, international law is perceived as a common part of our legal systems. Nevertheless, the inception and evolution of international law still remains quite unclear. According to many authors, international law is a concept founded in the modern times. However, the idea of regulating international relations existed already in antiquity and was first solidified in detail in ancient Rome. The primary goal of this thesis is to reveal and explain that many of the current legal institutes of international law can be traced back to ancient Roman law. The concept of international law was however not a Roman invention - to a certain extent, it was adopted from Hellenic city-states through a variety of traditions and customs. However, Romans made significant progress in the actual regulation and codification of international relations. These included diplomatic law, status of and relations with foreigners, immigration and naturalization. Further, Roman law contained regulations related to maritime law, international dispute resolution and rules regarding conclusion of international treaties. Finally, law of war and peace was one of the most important and extensive areas strictly regulated by the Romans. The concept of just war,...

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with the historical activities of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo in České Budějovice between the years 1850 - 1956. The thesis is especially based on the study of archival materials. Each chapter comprehensively describes the history of the three branches where the religious Sisters performed their activities. The branches are listed in chronological order of when they were established in the city. A public hospital is mentioned first, followed by an institutional complex of orphanages and schools at the former Vienna gate, and the group is concluded with an asylum for elderly people in need established in 1888. Particular attention is paid to the circumstances concerning the establishment of each branch, its background, ordinary and extraordinary days that were mostly mentioned in local chronicles; and two local superiors who had a major impact on the development and character of the community are also mentioned in the dissertation. Besides the observation of the beginnings and subsequent unprecedented development of community activities within the city frame, the text also includes an independent final chapter focused on events associated with the definitive end after the year 1948. ZusammenfassungThe Yiddish translation of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans by the Jewish convert Heinrich Christian Immanuel Frommann is one of the most complex missionary tracts published by the Institutum Judaicum et Muhammedicum in Halle on the Saale. This paper contextualizes this annotated translation within the publications of the Pietist mission to the Jews and analyses Frommann’s methods of translation as well as his argumentative strategy. In addition, the different target audiences of the Yiddish Romans and its varied use in practical missionary work are examined. As will be shown, Frommann’s translation and commentary also functioned as a principal reservoir for various missionary activities in Halle.

Abstract:
In the provinces, the emperor is the representative of the centralized empire and in his decisions and regulations he therefore mainly used Roman law. The institute of long-lasting possession has a scholarly history of being traced back to either Roman or provincial law, and thus the debates encapsulate many of the recurring tensions between provincial practice and centralizing tendencies. Through a detailed study of two documents pertaining to the longi temporis praescriptio that record the decision of Septimius Severus and Caracalla (BGU 267 and P. Strass. 22), this article locates the origins of the institute firmly in a provincial context and explains how the emperor was confronted with the requirements of provincial legal practice.

Abstract:
Romania experiences severe flooding problems almost every year. Within the last decade, floods have resulted in more than 200 deaths and estimated economic damages of $92 million per year. Also, between 1992 and 2012, there were 700 reported accidental chemical spills in Romania, some of them resulting in trans-boundary impacts. In this chapter is described the Romanian flood early warning system concept realized by the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) under the auspices of Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (in former time Ministry of Environmental and Waters – MoEW) and DESWAT project. Beginning with 2014, DESWAT (Destructive Waters Abatement and Control) flood monitoring system is functional in all Romania.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the impact of the reasons for the commitment on the validity of the contract. Due to the fact that most institutes of modern law find their origin in Roman law, the paper begins by presenting the role of the cause of obligation in Roman law. The author then analyzes the causal and anti-causal views of legal theory, all in order to emphasize the fact that the cause of the contractual obligation is theoretically a very controversial institute of the law of obligations. The last part of the paper is dedicated to the cause of contractual obligation in our contract law. Starting from the fact that the Law on Obligations accepts with its provisions the subjective and objective conception of the cause of the contractual obligation, the author points out that the objective conception of the cause of the contractual obligation, accepted through art. 51. ZOO, is a redundant institute that has no greater practical significance and which is successfully replaced by other institutes of law of obligations.

Abstract:
This study aimed to identification of some rootstocks for cucurbitaceous vegetables and their influence on cultures. These vegetables (cucumber, watermelon, melon) are very popular crops in Romania. Vegetable crops are very sensitive to climatic vagaries, so fluctuation in climatic parameters at any phase of growth can affect the yield. Grafting on Cucurbitaceae is a method which has improved and spread quickly during the past years, a similar approach to crop rotation, a practice meant to increase productivity, resistance or tolerance to soil diseases and pests, as well as to abiotic factors and at increasing fruit quality. The research was conducted at the Horting Institute, Bucharest, Romania. Several aspects are taken into account in the use of rootstocks: environmental adaptability, quality fruit, resistance/tolerance for soil diseases and pests, drought, floods, soil salinization, heavy metal content, organic pollutants. Some resistant rootstocks have been identified worldwide (PS1313, RS841, bottle-gourd, NUN-9075, Argentario, PI296341 and others). Several rootstocks are very used in Romania for conventional and ecological crops (UG 29A, Shintoza, Emphasis, Cobalt and others). Following the studies undertaken on research trials in the greenhouses, many rootstock genotypes were selected and tested in the Horting Institute and some results are presented in this paper.

Abstract:
This study aimed to identification of an ecological alternative for the chemical disinfection of soil in the greenhouses from Romania. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most popular vegetable crops in the world. The carbohydrate, vitamins, salts of important mineral elements and organic acids content of tomato fruits is very important. Tomato crops are very sensitive to climatic vagaries, so fluctuation in climatic parameters at any phase of growth can affect the yield and the fruit quality. Grafting on Solanaceae is a method which has improved and spread quickly during the past years, a similar approach to crop rotation, a practice meant to increase productivity, resistance or tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress factors and at increasing fruit quality. The research was conducted in a glass greenhouse of the Horting Institute, Bucharest, Romania. The biological material used was a Romanian tomato hybrid (Siriana F1), a Dutch tomato hybrid (Abellus F1) and four rootstocks, a Dutch tomato hybrid (Emperador F1) and three Romanian tomato cultivars (L542, L543 and L544) obtained from the Research and Development Station for Vegetable Growing, Buzău, Romania. The rootstocks have had resistance to biotic stress factors (soil diseases and pests) and the chemical disinfection of soil has was eliminated. The result of this research are presented in this paper.

Abstract:
A programme on the safety analysis linked to the geological disposal of radioactive wastes is under study at the Institute for Nuclear Research Pitesti. In relation to the migration of radionuclides in the terrestrial environment following a possible release from the repository, specific experimental studies have been developed in order to provide the necessary input data for the risk assessment models. The paper reports the results of studies performed with 241Am. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the transport parameters of 241Am in the geological formations of Saligny site — the potential near-surface repository for low and intermediate radioactive wastes in Romania.
