Abstract: This study reads the novel Grande Sertão: Veredas and the influences of the pictorial art in the composition of its narrative. From the author’s records, found in the material filed in the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (Institute of Brazilian Studies) and in Guimarães Rosa’s appreciation for painting, we present the relations between first-person narrative and color variations in the novel. Those plays on light and shadows helped us to read the intricate dubiousness that rules the life, violence and sexuality of Riobaldo. Keywords: Grande Sertão: Veredas; light and shadow; painting; doubt.

This memoir on Professor Witold Mańczak as an academic teacher opens with a list of grammars and textbooks of the history of Romance languages which he wrote for students of Romance philology. This is followed by a description of Professor’s lectures in historical grammar of Romance languages – erudite but clear, with multiple examples and digressions which widened the scrutinized topic. Also his manner of examining is mentioned, known and strictly defined criteria of evaluation, and its objectivity. Professor’s colleagues from the Institute of Romance Philology like to reminisce his friendly and selfless help and cordiality towards students – beside his attributed severity. Lastly, we emphasize the importance of Professor’s scientific views and methodology in the shaping of academic staff.

Abstract:
Abstract The first tornado climatology for Romania is presented based on datasets attained from three periods between 1822 and 2013. The historical period (1822–1944) contains 33 tornado reports originating from historical newspaper archives and publications of the Romanian Meteorological Institute. Evidence of tornado observations in Romania before the nineteenth century is found in the representation of tornadoes in the Romania folk mythology. The socialist period (1945–89) contains only seven tornado reports, likely because during this period it was believed that tornadoes did not occur in Romania. The recent period (1990–2013) contains 89 tornado reports that came from mass-media sources and eyewitness reports. Of the 129 tornadoes from the Romanian tornado database, 98 were reported between May and July with a peak in May (36 reports). Most of the tornadoes (28 reports) occurred during the afternoon hours 1500–1659 local time. Tornadoes were more frequently reported over eastern Romania compared with other regions of the country, with a maximum over southeastern Romania [0.37–0.45 (105 km2)−1 yr−1].

"Providential personalities are an essential, unifying, element across cultures, omnipresent in the world’s history. They are one of a kind, born every century or even more than a hundred years apart, and their emergence is conditioned by specific factors and even circumstances. Among Romania’s historical personalities, Professor Cantacuzino’s name and achievements could not be contained within the country’s borders. His genius has left its mark not only on the Romanian public health system, or even the nearby Balkan area, but has echoed way further than Europe at that time. The conscious effort he made to offer more than he had previously received stemmed from his exceptional personal development work. A multifaceted persona like few have been, he has managed to acquire great insights into many subjects and, more importantly, he had the character and strength to establish a Healthcare Legacy and an Institute that will soon celebrate 100 years of existence. The current generation and the ones to come should learn their history and praise the achievements of their ancestors, while also preserving and further cultivating them, for the good of Romanian citizens, Romania and the global health system."

Abstract:
"“With Marx against Moscow”: the backstage of editing Karl Marx’s manuscripts about Romanians. In mid-1960s, a book containing unknown manuscripts attributed to Karl Marx was published in Romania. The documents were discovered at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam by the Polish historian Stanislav Schwann. The sources of the most important notes were reprised from a book written by the French historian Élias Regnault in mid-19th century. For the Romanian communist leadership, the Russian presence in the Romanian Principalities during the first half the 19th century was the most relevant part of the texts signed by Marx. As such, the historical discourse was co-opted in the political plan aimed to emancipation from Soviet authority in Romania. The main Romanian historian involved in the plan for editing Karl Marx’ writings was Andrei Oţetea. As Director of the Institute of History of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest, he received the main mission of maintaining the correspondence with the Institute of Amsterdam. The study aims to establish the evolution of Romanian-Dutch treaties, in order to exploit the manuscripts, as well as the involvement of the historiographical circles. Although the question was treated as a strictly political one, the project experienced several phases influenced in particular by the changes of attitude from the Dutch Institute. Thus, an important objective of the study is to highlight the reactions produced by the Romanians’ intentions to bring to light some important data attributed to Karl Marx Keywords: Andrei Oţetea, Karl Marx manuscripts, Institute of Social History Amsterdam. Abstract:
The comparative estimation was carried out with eight Serbian pepper varieties (Capsicum annuum L.) during the period 2010-2011 in field conditions at Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute, Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The varieties were evaluated by some important morphological traits of the plant and fruit, total and marketable yield. The assessment by plant and stem height showed proved differences between them. Romansa and Ekstaza formed significantly longer fruits than other varieties while Amanda was with the lowest values by this trait but with the highest ones by the diameter at the base and flesh thickness. Romansa, Ekstaza and Delfina were most productive before maturity stage with 46.04 t ha-1, 45.31 t ha-1 and 45.13 t ha-1, respectively. The varieties which were evaluated by yield of the fruit at maturity stage showed non proved differences by total yield and their values were from 21.34 t ha-1 for Delfina to 24.41 t ha-1 for Slonovo uvo.

Abstract:
Ecotourism has been gaining popularity in recent times as more people are embracing the preservation of nature. Most countries are implementing laws to preserve natural habitats and other countries are practising a forestation in a bid to restore their lost nature. Romania is a country that is blessed with natural capital and is open to ecotourism. Over the years, Romania has been host to tourists from different countries, especially the European countries, who visit mostly to enjoy the eco tourist destinations of Romania. This research aimed to study the tourist traffic in protected areas in Romania and how they can be improved in order to generate further income for the Romanian tourism sector. This research made use of secondary data that were retrieved from the Association of Ecotourism Romania and the National Institute for Research and Development in Tourism. This research found out that most of the visitors to the Romanian tourist sites were the indigenes. However, tourists from different countries were more involved in ecotourism than the indigenes. At the end of this article, recommendations are made on how tourist traffic can be increased by the Romanian tourism department. Keywords: Ecotourism, protected area, ecosystems, nature.

This article proposes a synthetic analysis of the development level of regions in Romania with the concentration/diversification model, using Gini coefficients and Lorenz curve, based on the current statistical indicators. Knowing the degree of concentration and also the influence factors is useful in making decisions and setting regional policy measures. The analysis of regional disparities based on a series of data and indicators provided by The Romanian National Institute of Statistics for 2007–2016. The main findings highlight a deepening of the regional disparities in Romania in 2016 compared with 2007 explained mainly by the fact that the Bucharest–Ilfov region registered an economic development much above the other regions.

Abstract Our study contributes to bridging the empirical gap between regional disparities and entrepreneurship, using a spatial panel framework. Regional disparities in Romania increased after the communist period and even more after the EU accession. Using NUTS3 level data provided by The Romanian National Institute of Statistics, for the period 2008-2018, we investigate the impact of entrepreneurship on regional disparities. We have found new details regarding the link between entrepreneurial activity and inequality. Entrepreneurship matters but, most importantly, it matters differently in developed, emerging and low-income countries. The results suggest that entrepreneurship does not have a significant impact on regional disparities in Romania.

Abstract:
This research compares tourism competitiveness of two neighboring countries, Romania and Bulgaria, which have many similarities economically as well as from a geopolitical and historical perspective. Despite these similarities, immediately after the 1990s, which marked the fall of the communist regime, the tourism phenomenon in the two countries had divergent evolutions. As the tourism industry in Bulgaria, especially its seaside tourism, underwent unprecedented development, the tourism activity in Romania systematically lost its competitiveness. The factors affecting the appearance and increase of such a difference are of interest to the Romanian seaside tourism. To generate the answer to this problem, we perform a series of comparative analyses with data from the World Economic Forum, in terms of the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report (2011-2015), `the National Authority for Tourism of Romania, and the National Institute of Statistics from Romania and Bulgaria. We identified a series of constitutive elements relating to the success of the Bulgarian seaside tourism and a sequence of deficiencies in the strategic and organizational maneuvers of the tourism activity at the Romanian seaside.

Fast diagnosis of Avian Influenza is a prerequisite for confining outbreaks. Diagnosis implies the differentiation of virulent and non-virulent Avian Influenza virus. After starting with PCR screening for matrix protein followed by identifying the presence of H5 and N1 genes, the diagnosis methodology within Romanian Institute for Diagnosis and Animal Health has moved to rapid molecular tests for detecting the virulent and nonvirulent strains. During October-December 2005 over 3400 biological specimens from 16 affected poultry backyards from Eastern Romania were tested by Real- Time PCR in the first Romanian outbreak. Over 3000 specimens have been tested in 2006, in the second Romanian outbreak when commercial poultry farms from central and southern Romania were affected.

Abstract:
Sustainable tourism is gaining importance in national agendas to encourage economic growth, social inclusion, and the protection of cultural and natural assets. More than 13 million tourists (10.6 mil. Romanians and 2.6 mil. foreigners) visited Romania in 2019, the fifth consecutive year of growth for the tourism sector. The authors have selected 10 statistical indicators to highlight the main components for tourism sustainability by using the principal component analysis (PCA). The current patterns of sustainable development of tourism and the territorial inequalities at a micro-scale were assessed based on a sustainable tourism index (STI). In addition, to observe the way indicators interact and determine each other and to analyze the territorial disparities, the hierarchical ascending classification was used. The study was performed using the statistical data available at NUTS5/LAU level provided by the National Institute of Statistics. In addition, various data and information extracted from documents published by the UNWTO, National Institute for Research and Development in Tourism, the World Bank, EUROSTAT, etc., were also used. By applying an STI, the authors were able to assess the tourism development level at a national scale in Romania, delineating the most advantaged/disadvantaged areas. The analysis of sustainable tourism in Romania shows that tourism performance is more consolidated in the big cities, the Black Sea coast, the Danube Delta and the Carpathian Mountains. Studies such as the present one are meant to provide a methodological framework that will be useful to perform a quantitative assessment of the sustainable level of tourism development in terms of economic, social and environmental performance.

Abstract:
Abstract Lightning-related fatalities in Romania are analyzed and presented for the first time using data from the Romanian National Institute of Statistics. The database contains 724 lightning fatalities that occurred between 1999 and 2015 in Romania, corresponding to an average of 42.6 fatalities per year. The annual number of lightning fatalities decreased from 65 fatalities per year between 1999 and 2003 to 23.2 fatalities per year between 2011 and 2015. The majority of fatalities occurred in May–August (42% of all fatalities) with a peak in June (31%) and July (28%). The highest fatality rates (>2.6 fatalities per million inhabitants per year) are observed over southwestern Romania, a region characterized by high values of cloud-to-ground lightning density (>2 flashes per square kilometer per year) and by a relatively high percentage (>40%) of the population living in rural areas. The majority of fatalities (78%) were reported in rural areas. Approximately 78% of the victims were male. The most vulnerable group was males between the ages of 10–39 living in rural areas. To further reduce the lightning fatality rate in Romania, currently one of the highest in Europe, the authors argue that lightning mitigation activities and information campaigns about the risks associated with lightning should be initiated in Romania.

Abstract The present paper studies the way intellectual property rights may encourage sustainable medical tourism, meaning the advantages that a patent, traditional knowledge, a trademark, or other IP right may offer to a hospital in order to attract foreign patients. The analysis is done trough the Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics “Ana Aslan” case study, seen not from a medical point of view but from the perspective of the intellectual property importance for the development of medical tourism. The Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics “Ana Aslan” was founded in 1952 and become an international renowned center in the study and the diminishing of old age effects. Many celebrities (artist and state presidents) came to receive treatment here, even though Romania had, at that time, a communist regime.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Relatively new in Romania, IT governance is defined as procedures and policies established in order to assure that the IT system of an organization sustains its goals and strategies. This bundle of policies and procedures, following the best practices in the area, intends to guide and control the IT function in order to add value to the organization and to minimize IT risks. The purpose of the research is to identify the measure in which the IT governance practices are implemented to the level of the financial institutions in Romania. The goal of this paper is a comparative analysis for implementing IT governance using data offered by the IT Governance Institute. This institute makes every year a study (IT Governance Global Status Report – 2006) to determine a sense of priorities and to develop actions for implementing IT governance, using data which acknowledges once more the need for all organizations to have tools and services to assure an efficient IT governance. In this way, the research will analyze, in the field of Romanian financial institutions, the most serious IT problems pointed out by the respondents from the last year, the most efficient measures considered by top management for resolving problems pointed out, the best used practices in IT governance and the most used frameworks for implementing IT governance practices.
