Charles, Christie Marie. "Work-Family Conflict: Does Romance Matter?" ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3595.

Abstract:
Research has shown that being in a romantic relationship has related negatively with work-family conflict. Using social exchange theory, the investment model, and role theory, this study examined the relationships among the dimensions of perceived partner support, romantic relationship interdependence, and work-family conflict. A sample of 192 adults in paid employment, currently involved in a romantic relationship, were recruited from SurveyMonkey Contribute. Study participants completed online a demographic survey, the revised Support in Intimate Relationships Rating Scale (SIRRS), the Investment Model Scale, and work-family conflict scales. Correlation analyses showed that work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict correlated negatively with commitment and positively with quality of alternatives as hypothesized. As hypothesized, regression analyses showed that quality of alternatives and informational support explained unique variance in work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict and that commitment explained unique variance in family-to-work conflict. PROCESS mediation analyses showed partial support for the hypothesis of mediation. Quality of alternatives and commitment mediated the relationships between esteem/emotional support and family-to-work conflict and instrumental/tangible support and family-to-work conflict. Quality of alternatives mediated the relationships between informational support and work-to-family conflict, informational support and family-to-work conflict, and instrumental/tangible support and work-to-family conflict. The findings contribute to positive social change by offering added knowledge about the occurrence of work-family issues in the lives of employees representing a large percentage of the workforce.

len, Esther Helen Esther. "Plautus and the sentimental ideal of the Roman family." Thesis, Durham University, 2011. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/809/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1991 Suzanne Dixon published an article that suggested that, from the late Republic onwards, it is possible to detect a sentimental ideal of family life at Rome. She also argued that there is a significant paucity of affectionate terminology in Plautus' mid-republican works. My thesis looks for traces of a Roman sentimental ideal in Plautus' comedies. I analyse his plays, being careful to interpret them in the light of comic convention and paying attention to the varying forms of comic drama, and I search for sentimental themes related to wives and husbands, parents and children, the home, and slaves and outsiders. I consider the evidence and arguments used by Dixon and other historians and also look at modern examples of sentimentality (in literature and in other cultural material), using these as a tool to measure sentimentality in Plautus. My overall contention is that Plautus' metatheatrical plays deliberately explored and exploited the sentimental ideology of his original audience. In fact, some of the works’ humour depended upon the spectators' knowledge of the ideal and its claims upon their attention; Plautus wryly exposed the tensions that existed between the ideal and the realities of daily life. Plautus’ plays were successful and obviously communicated well with his contemporaries. I therefore conclude that sentimental ideology was well known in Rome prior to the late Republic – that it is an enduring concept, discernible in many cultures and eras.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Family businesses are shaping the world’s economy through contributions to establishing jobs, creating wealth, and competitiveness, correspondingly being influenced by the quality of the business environment. Family business branding is useful to understand how to leverage their unique resources and create a competitive advantage, these being shaped by the context. The historical events and economic factors of Romania are influencing the decision of family firms to portray their family in their branding endeavours in order to become more competitive. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to understand the reasoning behind the Romanian family companies’ decision to promote their family aspect in their brand and how do family business identity, image, and reputation relate to the brand in the context of Romania. For guidance, two research questions were developed in order to gain valuable and significant insights for this thesis. Method: Ontology – Relativism; Epistemology – Social constructionism; Approach – Inductive; Design – Exploratory; Methodological choice – Qualitative; Time Horizon – Cross-sectional; Strategy – Case-study; Data collection – In-depth Interviews; Sampling – Non-probability Purposive Samples based on criteria (eleven respondents); Data Analysis – Content Analysis. Conclusion: From findings, it can be concluded that the context of Romania has a direct impact on family businesses and on how they are conducting their family brand promotion. Even though it is considered to have a positive impact, few Romanian family businesses actively market themselves as a family business. The predominant factors affecting the decisional processes, which are shaped by the contextual effects according to the three brand dimensions, have been comprised in a model of influential factors.

Linville, Deanna Christine. "Family Experiences Concerning Adopting a Previously Institutionalized Child from Russia or Romania." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28022.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of families choosing to adopt a child internationally in the United States has increased exponentially on an annual basis (Johnson, 1997; Miller, 2000). The purpose of this study was to understand the adoption process experiences of families who have adopted a child between the ages of three and five years old from Russia or Romania after 1992. In this clinical sample, all participantsâ adopted children had been referred for and undergone neuropsychological, medical, speech, and/or language evaluation. Specifically, the research questions were designed to help therapists understand the role mental health care professionals, schools, family members, and friends played in the adoption process and how the participantsâ experiences compared with their preadoptive expectations. Twenty families were interviewed and several observations were conducted. Data analysis consisted of thematic analysis which elicited codes and themes across the interviews. This studyâ s findings suggest that: 1) parents would have found more preparation before adoption helpful in the process; 2) health care professionals and schools need to be better educated about problems, concerns, and appropriate treatments specific to post-institutionalized children; 3) raising (a) special needs child(ren) puts significant strain on the caregiver(s) and their significant relationships; and 4) families with special needs children are extremely resilient. These findings are important for education and healthcare professionals, families who are planning to adopt internationally in the future and current adoptive families.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:
Il doit rendre compte du lien entre l’histoire familiale et l’aptitude des deux écrivaines à traiter de questions plus larges<br>Marguerite Duras (1914-1996) and Eileen Chang (1920-1995), two women writers of the 20th century show specific sources for their inspiration : Duras – was from Indochina, and Chang – was from Shanghai; childhood and family experiences offer the background of most of their works. The worlds they describe are consequently defined by pain and suffering – either individual or collective. The family theme prevails in the works of both writers. It allows to offer a psychoanalytic reading of many of their novels of each writer, and to comment them by reference to the family romance which characterizes Duras and Chang. But childhood, family secrets, importance of the mother image, etc., are not the only background of Duras and Chang’s works. Both writers were fully aware of the political and social conditions which prevailed, and of the women’s situation. Consequently, the psychoanalytic reading of both writers should not neglect these conditions and the lucidity of both writers. This reading should account for the connection between the family history of both writers and their ability to address broader issues

Davies, Elizabeth. "A practical theology of family ministry : the role of the Diocesan Coordinator of Family Ministry in the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales." Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2016. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/702163/.

Full text
Abstract:
Diocesan Coordinators are the principal drivers of activities within the Catholic Church in England and Wales to sustain and nourish healthy marriage and family life. This is the first study of their professional context, practices and purpose, further informed by North American accounts of family ministry in Congregational, Reformed and Roman Catholic settings, mainly from the 1980’s. This study aimed to better understand the Coordinator role so as to inform capacity-building efforts within dioceses for family ministry. This is an inductive study using the methodology of qualitative description. Fourteen diocesan coordinators participated in an online survey. Job descriptions, person specifications and diocesan vision statements were reviewed. Four Coordinators were selected for telephone interview. The tripartite conceptual framework draws on the Church’s understanding of family ministry, the diocesan-parish relationship and the ecclesial identity of the family. This study reveals that diocesan Coordinators are primarily responsible for training and networking activities with volunteers engaged in family ministry. Work with families in crisis is largely unacknowledged by their employers. Relationships with parishes are ambivalent. Coordinators tend to develop supra-parish networks of marriage preparation or parenting facilitators, rather than processes which enable autonomous parish family ministry to develop. Diocesan structures of support, including guiding visions for family ministry, are weak, compounding a lack of training for their role. Nonetheless Coordinators have developed important pragmatic approaches and moral frameworks to manage the sensitivities of this ministry. Their practice has implications for broader Church efforts to pastorally accompany families following publication of Amoris Laetitia, the pope’s post-synodal document on marriage and family life. More attention to recording practice is strongly recommended in order to facilitate reflective practice, particularly on pragmatic approaches and moral frameworks. Coordinators and their dioceses need greater theological competence, especially regarding the ecclesial identity of the family, in order to better serve the complexity and realise the potential of parish family ministry.

Hofer, Kurt R. "The family at court in literature and art during the reign of Philip IV." Thesis, Tulane University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3622703.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> This dissertation examines representations of the family in art and literature of the Spanish court during Philip IV's reign. I contend that depictions of royal and noble families in court settings&mdash;and by artists who resided at court&mdash;spoke to the monarchy's social and political concerns at a time of imperial crisis. Family is understood here not as a fixed entity, but as a mobile cultural construct that bent, in Golden Age Spain, to address a variety of needs. The emotional and theological intricacies of a prince's marriage indicated the preparedness or ineptitude of a king to be; a noblewoman's marriage abroad to a foreign prince embodied Spain's struggles to contain the Thirty Years' War; the depiction of an artist's family in a royal palace demonstrated the ambitions of the courtier-artist. </p><p> Chapter 1 examines V&eacute;lez de Guevara's play <i>Reinar despu&eacute;s de morir</i> (1635). I propose that the play's thematic interest lies in an attempt to reconcile the strictures of dynastic marriage&mdash;marriage for reasons of state&mdash;with the necessities of emotional fulfilment and mutual trust of marriage partners suggested in contemporary conduct manuals. Chapter 2 reads two short stories from Mar&iacute;a de Zayas's <i>Desenga&ntilde;os amorosos</i> (1648), "Mal presagio casar de lejos," and "Estragos que causa el vicio," as nationalist allegories. I suggest that the families Zayas depicts are metaphors for a Spanish national family, belagured in European theaters of war and beset by domestic conflicts such as the Portuguese and Catalonian uprisings of the 1640s. In Chapter 3 I explore a painting, <i> La familia del pintor</i> (1665), by Juan Bautista del Mazo, son-in-law of Diego Vel&aacute;zquez and heir to his post as painter of the king. I compare Mazo's <i>La familia del pintor</i> to Vel&aacute;zquez <i> Las meninas</i>. Mazo's proud portrayal of his own biological family and of a dyanasty of court artists indicates that the painting is not merely dervivative of his father-in-law's masterpiece, <i>Las meninas</i>; rather, Mazo has a pictorial agenda all his own, one that includes the social advancement of the court artist and of a multitude of heirs seeking the king's patronage in other careers.</p>

Foca, Liliana. "The effects of family relationships on children of prisoners : a study of Romania." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2018. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34570/.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst extensive research has been conducted on prisoners’ families in the last twenty years, it has mainly focused on the effects of parental imprisonment on either the children, their non-imprisoned carers, or women partners of male prisoners. While research concludes that imprisonment has far-reaching effects on families in general, less is known about the impact of parental incarceration on family relationships and, more specifically, on how different relationships within the same family unit are affected. The purpose of this study, which was conducted in Romania, is to explore the effects of family relationships on children of prisoners in particular. In doing so, children’s and mothers’ perspectives are analysed with respect to how fathers’ incarceration has affected them at the individual level. It then explores the impact of fathers’ imprisonment on the mother-child and mother-father relationships, highlighting their effects on children’s wellbeing. Parenting practices are also discussed in the context of parental imprisonment. The findings drawn from 15 interviews with children and 16 interviews with mothers suggest that fathers’ incarceration affects not only children and mothers separately, but also the relationships within the family. The relationship between the child and his/her mother goes through changes in terms of emotional support, communication, trust and freedom (for teenagers), and household responsibilities. Mothers’ and children’s narratives on the marital relationship before and during incarceration reveal that parents’ relationships are mainly focused on the children’s wellbeing and the household and that children have positive views on parenthood. However, this narrative differences where where children and mothers were victimized by the incarcerated father prior to imprisonment. The findings of the study are further explored using Bowlby’s (1969, 1973, 1980) attachment theory andBelsky’s (1984) model of competent parental functioning. The thesis concludes with ideas for future research, and implications for theory and policies.

Abstract:
It is the most important value that everybody admits. In our family indeed we learn how to respect each other, we have our first lessons, we receive a moral in heritage from our parents and education. Thought Naguib Mahfouz and Hervé Bazin are issued from different cultures, they often talk about the same problems concerning the family: the relations between parents and children, the difficulty in the couple, the place and the part of the woman, sexuality, religion, marriage, divorce, solidarity, prejudices, taboos, etc. . . Naguib Mahfouz and Hervé Bazin are among the best writers, who express perfectly the hopes and the ambitions of their peoples. They marvelously well describe the life of families, and the evolution of the habits and customs inside the same family, painting its days of joy, of sadness and its difficulties through political events, which brought changes in the way of living in Egypt and in France. Naguib Mahfouz and Hervé Bazin both excel in giving a realistic picture of every day life in the popular places or boroughs of Cairo or of west of France. The purpose of this study is to follow the evolution of these tow novelists and also the changes of the family and society in France and in Egypt from the beginning of he Great War to the eighties

The subject of family is indeed constantly reinvested by authors regardless of their nationality or the period they depict. Almudena Grandes belongs to such category of writers and gives a paramount role to the family unit. Although a recurring topic in her literary trajectory, it has never been thoroughly studied by critics who yet analyzed many aspects of her work. Because such topic seemed crucial to us in Grandes’s writing, we focused on the family unit in three of her novels, Malena es un nombre de tango, Los aires difíciles and El corazón helado. In our corpus, family is, first and foremost, a group transmitting values which does not appear as a mere reflection of the social microcosm – such comparison being, we believe, a very common one in the field of literary theory. The families under study do not only convey a system of ideological values, but they also belong to a hierarchy of characters which creates a second system of values in turns in agreement with or in opposition to the first one. We thus intend to show the strategies used by Almudena Grandes to impose her own narrative system to the reader. In order to describe Almudena Grandes’s intentions, we decided to approach family through several prisms. Family models and alternative models show the rise of an antagonistic system based on contradictory values – patriarchal and conservative on the one hand, and republican on the other hand. But this chapter also highlights how some characters try to recreate a family outside blood ties or marriage bond, when their actual family is completely perverted or nonexistent. The different family figures – mother, father and siblings – build up an apparently unidirectional hierarchy of characters treated with deference or hostility by the narrative instance. Finally, the chapter related to family secrets unveils the moral ambiguity of some characters – torn apart between being and appearing – who, in two thirds of the cases, are eventually exposed. The discovery of the secret, if any – one character only manages to keep his secret and never confesses who he truly is – forces the characters to redefine themselves and gives them a chance to go through a liberating resilience process

Abstract:
The vicariat was a subownership system based on a slave (uicarius) belonging to another slave (ordinarius). The uicarii were included in the peculium of the first-degree slaves. The vicariat testified of hierarchies among slaves. This study aims to enlight origin of this status (purchase or cognatic inheritance). By doing so, it disclosed strategies in order to strengthen the slaves families. It also demonstrates vicariat’s utility on the domestic level as well as professional. The vicariat was a nursury for young slaves and a “slave school”. By training uicarii for a specific work, the chief slaves were magistri who taught them specialized knowledges. In the familia Caesaris, the vicariat was a important linchpin of administration in Roman State

Abstract:
The depiction of family ties is one of the core elements of Swahili novels in Tanzania, especially in the post-Independence, socialist period, conveying all the contradictions of that social and cultural context. On one hand the representation of family relationships in terms of tense and aggressive behaviour (Mlacha 1987: 82) reflects the clashes of those years, between town and countryside, between genders and between different generations. On the other hand, the image of a new family - like for instance Chonya, Masika and her baby in Ndyanao Balisidya’s novel Shida (1975) - stands as a commitment to an alternative society, a dream of a better life inspired by Ujamaa which marked the Swahili prose of the 1970’s (Mbughuni 1980: 92). Said A. Mohamed, after his first novels which dealt with the colonial and pre-revolutionary past, turned his attention to contemporary society, but has continued to develop the idea of the family as a symbolic space where relationships between the characters articulate the inequalities and the conflicts within Zanzibari society. His literary discourse, as will become clear in the following pages, brilliantly investigates the deep roots and the countless facets of authoritarianism in contemporary Zanzibari society, depicting a gallery of fathers - in a biological and in a metaphorical sense – who are despotic, immoral, hypocritical, and increasingly cynical.

Abstract:
To date there has been little research on family changes caused by having a child of 0 to 7 years old with autism in the family. This thesis examines the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the context of the family and compared families' experiences in Ireland and Romania. This research took a family system perspective, exploring how families with children on the autism spectrum function during the particularly stressful period of the diagnosis process and thereafter. This Ph.D. thesis contains the results of a comparative study of Irish and Romanian families of children with ASD. The analysis of the similarities and differences of how families who are raising a child with autism function during the diagnostic process is expected to provide a better understanding of the overall experience of families and to improve sensitivity during the diagnostic process. Fifty-four families and their children were recruited from two institutions: 24 families from Ireland (Dublin, Cherry Orchard Hospital) and 30 families from Romania (Timisoara, Cas a Faenza). The children were aged between 2 and 7 years. During the process of data collection, a relatively large number of Irish families refused to participate in this research, or accepted the invitation initially and then later refused it or stated that they are very 'busy'. A total number of 77 Irish families were contacted by the researcher and asked to participate in this study. Only 24 families agreed to participate and 53 refused to participate. In contrast, all of the 30 Romanian families who were contacted and asked to participate in this research accepted. This comparative research study is unique as no previous studies have focused on the impact of ASD diagnostic on family systems across two cultures in Europe. The results showed that families of a child with ASD in Ireland had different experiences during the diagnostic process of their child, compared to the Romanian families. Differences were also found between the two groups with regard to the role of mother and father in raising a child with ASD, parents' worries when received the diagnosis, parents' awareness/knowledge about ASD, and parents' level of involvement. A semi-structured interview was used to analyse similarities and differences between the two groups. The duration of the diagnostic process was significantly different between the two countries. Aspects of family functioning were tested using the family adaptability and cohesion evaluation scale IV (FACES IV) (Olson et aI., 2010). The results showed similarities and differences between the two groups in terms of mean scores for family cohesion, flexibility, communication and satisfaction. Present findings should be used by policymakers in improving parent's accessibility to ASD services for their children (diagnostic and post-diagnostic) in both countries. There is a crucial need to develop specialized services for children with ASD. The findings indicate that both instruments used (semi structured interview and FACES IV) provided valuable information about family functioning and family experience during the diagnostic process. The limitations of the study were discussed.

It discusses the formulaic ways in which daughters were described on their tombstones based on their age and the Roman virtues valued at the time. It primarily focuses on descriptors, superlatives used, the dedicators who commissioned the work, girls who died before their wedding, and ages of girls which have excesses in the months or days she lived as inscribed on her epitaph.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
H. Malot évoque la situation et invite, pour y faire face, à faire preuve d'humanisme en suivant la voie du paternalisme<br>H Malot’s career as a writer started in the late 1850’s at a time when the battle for Realism was going on. A young progressionist amenable to leftist views, he sided with the Moderns. His early novels bear witness to this commitment. Towards the end of his career he still proclaimed his support for the movement. Yet, as a proponent of the narrative tradition, he was convinced that any reality could not serve as the subject matter for an artwork, so he went his own way. Following Balzac’s example he supported character study that emphasized the moral man. E Zola rejected him as an idealist because of the small emphasis he gave to determinism and physiology. Malot’s writings, widely distributed through the press and cheap series made him a popular novelist. He relied on these medium in order for his novels to echo the moral, social and political issues that prevailed over the century. In a literary column that he wrote at the beginning of his career, he expressed his admiration for Dickens who, in Malot's own words, managed to coax his readers into seeing the shortcomings of Victorian society without shocking them and prodded them into redressing those failings. For Malot, this is where realism lies : in a literature that is in touch with the issues of the day, and with the potential to generate a reaction to them. The study of En Famille confirms the stance taken by H MALOT. If the book was not written until documentation had been gathered and research carried out in line with the procedure required for a realist novel it was devised out of a move in which imagination and narrative play a leading part. In a way that is even more overt than in other realist novels, genuine places open up onto a dreamlike world which serves as a backdrop to the story. The novel is nonetheless linked to the events that were foremost on French people’s minds in the 1890’s : poverty among workers and the risks of social unrest that were looming. Malot paints a picture of the situation and in order to confront it urges readers to display humanity in a paternalistic way

Abstract:
The focus of this study is to investigate the entrepreneurial growth intentions and expansion plans of new entrepreneurs in a transforming economy. As a focused method of investigation one country, Romania is examined. The study probes both the conceptual dimensions associated with the socio-cultural forces shaping transition, and the theoretical concepts associated with entrepreneurial centered socio-economic growth and development. Specifically the dissertation investigates the relationships between entrepreneurship, family dynamics and private enterprise development during socio-economic transition in Romania.<br/>The general research question posed is "What are the levels, and specific types of expansion plans found among new entrepreneurs in the former Soviet Bloc nation of Romania; what are the predictors of these expansion plans; and how do the environmental value systems and family dynamics impact planned growth?"<br/>The objective of this study is to examine thoroughly the different individual, group and environmental dimensions which impact entrepreneurial venture development via planned growth intentions and expansion plans. The study's central objectives are to 1) to identify what types of planned growth initiatives entrepreneurs intend to pursue, 2) to ascertain the levels of intensity entrepreneurs have towards planned growth, and 3) to investigate the impact family dynamics have on planned growth intentions.<br/>A theoretical multidimensional model of the predictors of expansion plans is developed. Specifically, a set of exogenous variables comprising a sequence of relationships are hypothesized to be related to entrepreneurial expansion plans. Three dimensions comprise the predictive model; 1) Micro level variables associated with the entrepreneur's personality, 2) Intermediate level variables related to societal dynamics, including family involvement and 3) Macro level variables affiliated with the comprehensive environment entrepreneurs operate in.<br/>The results of a survey of 410 Romanian entrepreneurs is used to test the multidimensional model. Data has been collected via the Entrepreneurial Profile Questionnaire which has been validated in Europe, Asia, and North and South America. The sample includes a rich cross section across a variety of industrial groups. Data is analyzed using a combination of descriptive and relational research techniques. A series of multivariate statistical procedures is employed to analyze the data and test the multidimensional model.

Abstract:
Those undergoing colonization, surviving pre-independence turmoil, and profiting from the colonizer’s withdrawal by adopting its models, are not looking for an identity. Yet those who are not adaptable, blind to opportunity, or old, are prone to reject models requiring giving up clothing or other such aspects of tradition which, they believe, would grant them a sense of identity – if only their community became homogenous again. The pitiful protagonist in ʿAmal-fil (Year of the Elephant), by Morrocan author Laylā Abū Zayd, and three of the four aged protagonists in ʿUššāq Bayya (The Lovers of Bayya), by Tunisian author Al-Sālimī, have a fear of cultural pollution so acute that they make themselves even sicker than they already were, especially when it comes to money which “rots everything”. Zahra is neither softhearted nor sensuous, and her marriage is brought to an end when her suddenly rich husband takes a lover; and the other three secretly nurture a sexual fantasy about the same woman while the son of the fourth, a visiting émigré who grew rich in Germany, decides to marry her. Zahra eventually turns to God to assure a place for herself in heaven whereas the old men agonize in the dread of hell. By dismissing this fear before they die, the two men who had the easiest youth point to the nature of genuine alterity in their community. It is the perversity of a tradition validated by terrifying religious beliefs, which prevents friendships among adolescent boys and girls, then marries them off with no consideration for their tastes and aptitudes, and then invites the men to brutalize wife and children in compensation. Since very few ever recover from their childhood, the cycle starts again and the tradition survives

Abstract:
This paper explores the meaning of condoms for six sexually active, college-educated women. Analysis of ethnographic interviews addresses four facets of their experiences with condoms. This report discusses (1) the condom in relation to the (female) body, and (2) condom use as a conjunction of doing sex and gender identity. Informant-generated topics are (3) the learning and sharing of condom knowledge, and (4) the mention of condoms in life stories. To contextualize these highly individual experiences, the author initially presents popular and historical meanings of condoms. After a brief review of condoms in historical discourses of birth control and sexually-transmitted diseases, condom meanings in current AIDS-inspired research are presented. The conclusion suggests how this qualitative data could inform sexual health education and condom promotion campaigns.

Lyons, Alice. "All Country Roads Lead to Rome: Idealization of the Countryside in Augustan Poetry and American Country Music." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2011. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/102.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines similarities between imagery of the countryside and the “country life” in both the poetry of Augustan Rome and contemporary American country music. It analyzes the themes of agriculture, poverty, family, and piety, and how they are used in both sets of sources to create an idealized countryside. This ideal, when contrasted with negative portrayals of urban life and non-idealized rural life, endorses an ideology that is opposed to wealth and that emphasizes the security and stability of the idyllic countryside. This ideology common to both may stem from the historical contexts of these two eras, revealing that Augustan Rome and modern America have unexpected similarities.

Lyon, Elizabeth Lain. "Mothers, Sons, and the Gothic Family in Brown, Poe, and Wharton." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/67.

Full text
Abstract:
Within Gothic literature, the mother is frequently missing. In Charles Brockden Brown’s Edgar Huntly, Edgar Allan Poe’s “Morella,” “Ligeia,” and “Eleonora,” and Edith Wharton’s “Bewitched,” men are left without parents, and they attempt to recuperate a mother-figure. To do so, the men in these texts psychologically project the role of their mother onto other women. Wives, sisters, and daughters all have the potential to become mothers to these men. This is a catastrophe for the women involved, for male perception fails to distinguish females as autonomous, unique beings. By conflating roles in the family structure, men destroy women and thus are left without the nurturing mother-figure – or indeed any female – they desperately need.

Baik, Yon-Hwa. Paris 8, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA082107.

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA020064.

Abstract:
As early as the first half of the 13th century, however, civil law experts and canonists modulated the restrictions, thereby moving from strict prohibition to a simple system of revocability. French practitioners, responding to requests from married people concerned to protect their surviving spouse, contributed to weakening the constraints of Roman and canon law; promissory oaths, renunciation clauses and donations through an intermediary comprised such contrivances, which were sometimes even improvised and fraudulent. Despite this long doctrinal slide and the palliatives drawn up by notaries, such interdictions persisted over a long period of time in most territorial legislations, redrafted and repeatedly reformed according to the standards of Roman law from the high Middle Ages to the beginning of the modern times

Abstract:
Through the indirect means of memory, this work follows women's routes - from italian unity to neo-feminism - from the house, traditional female space, ans specific space for woman herself (the house as a mother's womb) to the confused "word" of this end of millenary : "storia" of an everyday life which, nevertheless, renders an account of the century violence. The house acts as a social as vell as domestic imaginary, therefore, leaving the house answers a dual necessity for women : dystopia of the house as a useless protection and a will to partecipate in the world management. The female character signalizes itself by a particuliar understanding of the living space where the phobia of cellars may throw a light upon the impossible return to the mother. The time to break with mothers comes in the seventies, "the bad mothers "appearing with the claim for feminine reality. Then the memory of history allows a confirmation of a correspondence between the dystopia of the house and the utopia of a different word. With the search for "something else" which includes maternal fonction, the responsability of women who want not to conquer the world but to "live" in it, to make possible to live in. The crisis of ideoligies that women perceived before men, colours with an aspiration for "real justice" according to antigone's law : the law of blood against written law

Pike, Holly Jane. "No/bodies : carcerality, corporeality, and subjectivity in the life narratives by Franco's female prisoners." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/5939/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines female political imprisonment during the early part of Spain’s Franco regime through the life narratives by Carlota O’Neill, Tomasa Cuevas, Juana Doña, and Soledad Real published during the transition. It proposes the foregrounding notion of the ‘No/Body’ to describe the literary, social, and historical eradication and exemplification of the female prisoner as deviant. Using critical theories of genre, gender and sexuality, sociology and philosophy, and human geography, it discusses the concepts of subject, abject, spatiality, habitus, and the mirror to analyse the intersecting, influential factors in the (re)production of dominant discourses within Francoist and post-Francoist society that are interrogated throughout the corpus. In coining the concept of the ‘No/Body’ as a methodological approach, a narrative form, and a socio-political subject position, this thesis repositions the marginal and the (in)visible as an essential aspect of female carcerality. Read through this concept, the narratives begin to dismantle and rewrite dominant narratives of gender and genre for the female prisoner in such a way that the texts foreground the ‘No/Body’. This thesis thus presents the narrative corpus of lost testimonies as a form of radical textual and political practice within contemporary Spanish historiography.

Lakhlif, Mustapha. Bordeaux 3, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010BOR30103.

Abstract:
This thesis entitled “The woman in the family with Roman Africa: study from the documents of imperial period” is a study based on documents from the imperial period that includes a prologue and two main parts. The prologue is an approach to the history of the Libyan and Carthaginian woman. In the first part, devoted to the Early Roman Empire, the documentation is mainly epigraphic. In studying the inscriptions, we have tried to address the moral qualities of women and to highlight the feminine ideal embodied in pagan epigraphy. We have underlined the subject of conjugal morality and the role of the wife within the family and the pagan society in general. By focusing on specific themes, we sought to monitor changes in attitudes, through the issue morality. From African epigraphy Early Empire, that is a good reflection of a feminine ideal in pagan culture, we can expand the timeline while keeping in mind the same prospects in order to find them in Christian literature. Was there a change or a change in habits, in the way how to consider women? What the new faith has brought to women? What was the change in the place of women in Africa in the Christian era? How the Fathers of the Church have they focused on the woman and what role they assigned her? Were the Fathers of the Church misogynists? What does the woman represent in their designs? Was there certain “immobilize” in the situation of women in Africa, which would not have helped improve its position within the family and society? We tried to answer these questions in the second part of the thesis bay studying the writings of African apologists : Tertullian, Minucius Felix, Cyprian, Arnobius of Sicca, Lactantius, Arnobius the Younger, Fulgence of Ruspe and especially saint Augustine. We have reserved a separate chapter to highlight the role of women in martyrdom, which is the perfect adhesion of these female martyrs to the Christian faith. The terminus ante quem of this study is the fifth century with the Vandal invasion in Africa, which constitutes a real breakthrough in the history of North Africa. ”
