Uppsatsens syfte är att analysera olika egyptiska och romerska konstverk för att avgöra skillnaden mellan de två olika stilarna och avgöra gudinnans symboliska och estetiska syfte.  Den huvudsakliga metoden som har använts är Panofskys ikonografiska analys som är uppdelad i tre steg.  Den ytliga analysen, konstverkets bakgrund och i det sista steget används de två tidigare stegen för att utföra en analys av konstverkets betydelse och syfte. Dessa tre steg kallas även för det pre-ikoniska, det ikonografiska och det ikonologiska steget  Egyptisk och romersk konst är olika beroende på vilken form de var skapade i. Skulpturer användes i både tempel och hem men de egyptiska skulpturerna skapades av präster vid templen. Romerska skulpturer var oftast större och i tyngre material som marmor vilket tyder på en mer offentlig användning av i tempel eller/och av rikare sponsorer som senatorer och kejsare.  Romerska skulpturer skiljer sig från de egyptiska skulpturerna genom att ha ett estetiskt syfte utöver ett religiöst syfte. De hade inte bara ett mer dekorativt utseende, till skillnad från de strikta egyptiska skulpturerna, utan var också placerade i villor och tempel för estetiskt bruk istället för tillbedjan. Isis var sällan huvudpersonen i egyptiska eller romerska målningarna utan var oftast en stödjande karaktär till huvudpersonen. De romerska målningarna fanns i allmänna rum som tempel och hem medan egyptiska målningar, trots att de också fanns i tempel, ofta användes i gravkammaren. De var inte avsedda att betraktas av allmänheten och många forskare argumenterar att de inte kan ses som konstverk på grund av detta. Egyptiska målningar med Isis användes dessutom ofta som propaganda för att förstärka en faraos rykte. Detta var ett syfte som romerska målningar oftast saknade.

In the archaeological research about the Baltic Sea island of Gotland during Roman Iron Age, 0–400 AD, two different approaches are visible: One that sees the community life on Gotland as different from the one on the main land with a relative stabile development, based on the family and kin, where no higher elite separate itself. The other perception emanates from the changes in southern Scandinavia, where an elite steadily grows and finally isolate itself as an aristocracy with unlimited power over others, the development on Gotland is no exception. This paper is about describing, investigating and explaining these two points of view. By using a selection of written sources the paper tries to answer three questions: What archaeological argumentations are there for that Gotland should be particular? What support the views that the island was a part of an over-regional development when it comes to struggle for power? What lies behind these very diverse positions among archaeological scholars? Two scholars, Kerstin Cassel and Frands Herschend, represents the two opposite standpoints and the three questions are to be answered by a comparison with two of their main archaeological works. This comparison, based on the other written sources and my own understanding, will show that the two different views on the gotlandish development can be traced to, more than anything, the two writers pre-understanding of their own scientific argumentations.

This paper deals with diet and gender in the early roman iron age in Sweden. Human bone and tooth material from the Iron Age cemetery at Bjärby in Kastlösa parish on the island of Öland have been analysed for stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. 21 individuals were sampled. Where possible 4 samples were taken from each individual, from the first, second and third molar respectively and from one compact bone. By doing so it is possible, at least in theory, to trace intra-individual diets throughout life. In total, 64 samples were analysed by isotope ratio mass spectrometer. The low [delta]13C values indicate a diet based mostly on terrestrial resources, while the high [delta]15N values indicate some significant marine input. This discrepancy may be explained by an intake of freshwater fish or meat from suckling animals. The isotope values do not indicate any significant dietary reliance on cereals. Some gender differences in diet were observed. The [delta]15N values of the women were higher than those of the men, indicating a higher tropic level throughout life. The third molar [delta]13C values of the men were higher than those of the women, indicating a somewhat more substantial marine input during the teenage years.
