Abstract:
An exploration of the harmonic language of rock is presented, relying heavily on corpus data. Chords in rock are overwhelmingly root-position major and minor triads. The commonly-used triads are those within the “supermode”—a global scale containing all scale degrees except flat-2 and sharp-4. With regard to harmonic progression, rock shows an almost equal frequency of “classical” harmonic motions (descending fifths and thirds, ascending seconds) and “anti-classical” ones (ascending fifths and thirds, descending seconds). “Flat-side” chords (bVII, bIII, bVI) tend to cluster together, as do “sh

Abstract:
This book explores possible and impossible word meanings, with a specific focus on the meanings of verbs. It adopts the now common view that verb meanings consist at least partly of an event structure, made up of an event template describing the verb’s broad temporal and causal contours that occurs across lots of verbs and groups them into semantic and grammatical classes, plus an idiosyncratic root describing specific, real world states and actions that distinguish verbs with the same template. While much work has focused on templates, less work has addressed the truth conditional contributio

Abstract:
This chapter argues that there is a typology of languages according to how much meaning a root encodes independently of its syntactic categorization. This typology is illustrated by an in-depth discussion of three languages: English, Greek, and Hebrew. Hebrew is argued to represent one end of the scale where the root encodes a minimal and highly abstract meaning. English represents the other end where the root has a severely restricted meaning. The two languages differ in terms of the role of functional morphology, which is crucial in Hebrew but not at all a central part of English. Greek is i

Abstract:
The number of rights organizations worldwide has grown exponentially, as the term “human rights” becomes increasingly common among politicians and civil society activists. As international donors pour money into global human rights promotion, many governments—as well as scores of scholars and activists—fear a subtle, Western-led campaign for political, economic, and cultural domination. This book asks: What do publics in the global South think? Drawing on surveys in India, Mexico, Morocco, and Nigeria, the book finds most people are in fact broadly supportive of human rights discourse, trust l

The transforaminal approach, compared with the interlaminar approach, allows injectate delivery directly at the target nerve root, placing greater amounts of medication at the location of the suspected pathology. The utility of selective nerve root injections includes blocking with local anesthetics specific nerve roots suspected of transmitting radicular symptoms. These diagnostic radicular blocks are often used for presurgical planning. The fluoroscopic-guided lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injection approaches mentioned in this chapter have been described to safely and effectively d

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the structure of the verb stem in Oji-Cree, a dialect of the Algonquian language Ojibwe. It argues that a stem constitutes an independent semantic domain that corresponds to an event. This conception of stems explains why certain roots, called weak roots, must be preceded by modifiers, thereby satisfying a so-called left-edge requirement, while other roots, called strong roots, have no such requirement. Weak roots are semantically deficient and the obligatory pre-radical modifier is necessary to create a complete event. In contrast, an (optional) modifier before a str
