Abstract:
The paper studies the ropeways as a special subgroup of land traffic system from the interdisciplinary aspect of the traffic sciences and geography. The ropeways have seen a propulsive technical and technological development over the last several decades. Therefore, the paper gives an overview of the types of ropeways with special emphasis on the technologically most advanced ropeways. Regarding the lack of studies on the ropeway issues in Croatia, the space distribution of ropeways in the Republic of Croatia has been analysed. The ropeways, as well as other transport modes, affect the space, and since ropeways are considered environmentally friendly traffic modes, their impact on the environment is analysed, both in the mountains and in the cities. Moreover, the economic influence of ropeways on the surrounding area is studied as well. KEY WORDS: ropeway, surface lift, aerial ropeway, chairlift, gondola, funicular

Abstract:
The article presents the basic technical requirements for carrying-hauling ropes for monocable aerial ropeways contained in the Directive 2000/9/EC of the New Approach of March 20th 2000 on cableway installations designed to carry passengers and in European Standards harmonized with it. These requirements apply to materials used for ropes, methods of manufacturing of wires and ropes, physical parameters, mechanical properties, testing methods and rope discarding criteria. The article summarizes the different types of loads in carrying-hauling ropes for monocable aerial ropeways and their impact on the operation of the cableways. It also touches the subject of the properties of carrying-hauling rope constructions with equal lay and compacted strands used in ropeways in Poland in the last two decades with particular emphasis on the structure of cores made of plastics. An analysis and assessment of the rope operation has been carried out in the last part of the article. This analysis considers factors such as the rope construction, the method of carriers gripping, lay direction of rope related to the direction of ropeway movement, rope elongation depending on the type of core and the associated rope shortening and rope fatigue life.

Abstract:
The article develops a procedure for optimizing the technical characteristics of ropeways - the step and the height of intermediate towers, and carrying ropes tension force. The optimization problem was based on the minimization of the tower structures cost. The reduction of computing labor intensity is based on the fact that the position of the minimum point of the objective function will be tied to one of the optimization restrictions. This allowed us to propose two ways to reduce the labor intensity of computing: a) reduction in the dimension of the optimization problem; b) replacement of the search for the minimum of the objective function with the solution of the nonlinear algebraic equation. The article shows that the proposed algorithm has increased computational efficiency. The algorithm allows us to obtain the same optimal values of technical characteristics of ropeways as in the solution of the previously developed optimization task but using simpler mathematical methods.

Abstract:
Today it is hard to imagine an industry or an application that uses steel wire ropes in which the application of a magnetic flaw detector would be unsuitable. The ropes of loading cranes, mine hoists, ropeways, cable-stayed bridges, flare stacks, antenna masts, overhead power transmission lines, and other installations are not only subject to regular inspections (Sukhorukov and Mironenko 2003; Kotelnikov and Sukhorukov 2006; Sukhorukov et al. 2014), but the appropriate guidelines for these rope types are now described in industrial standards such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for crane ropes, ISO 4309 (ISO 2017); the European Standards (EN) standard for ropeways, EN 12927 (BSI 2019); and the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) standards for offshore ropes, IMCA LR 004, IMCA HSSE 023, and IMCA M 197 Rev.1 (IMCA 2018). Abstract:
Ropeways usually provide access to locations inaccessible to other means of transport. Due to this fact, the construction of ropeways is extraordinarily taxing in terms of both, technology and logistics. The site location is often in terrain difficult to access, which often precludes deployment of common construction mechanisms in ropeway construction. In such case, it is advisable to deploy a transport mechanism independent of the terrain – a helicopter. Functioning as “flying cranes“, the helicopters have been used in construction industry in Slovakia for six decades now. Having amassed positive experience, even the “conventional“ construction industry of the time, especially its ropeway transport segment, started to use the benefits of helicopters, with helicopter deployment subsequently gaining ground and becoming the mainstream technological procedure. Ropeway construction can hardly be feasible without them even nowadays. Throughout the history of helicopter deployment in construction industry, a constant search of improving the efficiency of their work has been under way, necessitated by the helicopter’s sensitivitiy to weather conditions and work procedures alike. The paper presents an analysis of the factors affecting helicopter operation together with a proposed methodology of modeling their work in simulation models and the benefits of such approach.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims at understanding how to reuse infrastructure built in the Alps during the First World War to facilitate access to upland areas, increasingly used for tourism, sports, and hiking, but neglected in terms of maintenance. In other words, the main goal here is to improve and preserve the state of the mountain environment (including forests, meadows, pastures, etc.) through the reuse of historical infrastructures such as ropeways and mule tracks. Any form of reactivation of the now abandoned military logistics system, consisting of roads, mule-tracks, paths, and ropeways would enable the currently depopulated places to initiate a new and virtuous cycle. In this way, controlled planning would allow adequate maintenance to be provided for those natural and anthropic landscapes which have been progressively deprived of a productive role. The condition of abandonment and the lack of maintenance of the Alpine landscape have allowed the abundant rains of recent years, which are the result of climate change, to damage the forests of northern Italy and cause a series of hydrogeological landslides. That said, it could be assumed that the conversion of abandoned mule tracks, paths, and ropeways would not only help preserve a healthy Alpine environment but would also contribute to control these phenomena. Furthermore, it would be a way of giving new use to the historical infrastructures that played such an important role in the early 1900s, recognizing in this way their historical value. The transformation of the Alpine landscape and the building of the infrastructures involved all the lines of the front which were located on the mountains. Therefore, the choice of the Asiago Plateau, a portion of the Venetian Prealps comprised between the provinces of Vicenza and Trento, is just paradigmatic, namely, it reflects the features of a more widespread situation. However, the laws promoted by the Italian state have, as their objective, the recovery and maintenance of forts, trenches and buildings of historical value, but do not include the mountain territory that surrounds them. Therefore, reusing the infrastructures from the First World War would allow the whole landscape to be kept active.

From 1833 when two ropewalkers performed in Sydney, circus skills have provided popular entertainment. By the 1850s thousands watched circus performances outdoors and in purpose-built theatres. The travelling circus was prompted by goldrush crowds far from the cities, and became the default when circus men found it was easier to change audiences than to change repertoires. Sydney seasons were regular annual engagements for many of Australia's circuses well into the twentieth century. Strong links were formed with international performers, and exchanges between the American and Australian circus worlds were frequent.

Abstract:
AbstractPassenger ropeways are a promising alternative for the development of public transport infrastructure in large cities. However, the construction of ropeways has a rather high cost and requires taking into account a significant number of restrictions associated with the features of the existing urban development and the placement of urban infrastructure. The main objective of this research is to develop optimization models that minimize the total cost of modular intermediate towers of a discretely variable height and a rope system due to the optimal placement and selection of the height of these towers, taking into account the features of the surface topography and urban development. The proposed modular principle for the construction of intermediate towers also enables the cost of construction to be further reduced. As a specific example, the design of a ropeway in the city of Bryansk, which has a complex terrain, is considered. The developed models are conveniently used at the initial stage of the design of the ropeway to compare the cost of various options for the location of the ropeway route in order to reduce the risk of error when choosing the least expensive option. The calculation results can serve as a guide for a preliminary assessment of the number and height of intermediate towers, their installation locations on the ground and the characteristics of the cable system.

The criteria for the rejection of ropes of Passenger cable cars are considered, the main defects of load-bearing, traction and load-bearing cables, possible causes of their occurrence and the criteria for rejection are described. The theoretical substantiation of defects associated with plastic deformations of the rope wire (extrusion of wires, stratification, twisting of the rope, kinks, breaks, basket shape) is given. The methods of monitoring the state of ropes in the process of operation of passenger cable cars are considered. Recommendations are given to improve the level of security by using remote monitoring systems based on modern digital information technologies. The criteria for rejecting the ropes of passenger cable cars are proposed: according to the undulation, wear and breakage of the outer wires of the ropes, which are absent in the current Federal Norms and rules «Rules for the safety of passenger cable cars and funiculars».

Abstract:
Cable-propelled transit’ (CPT), in particular detachable aerial ropeways are widely employed as transportation systems in alpine areas. In recent years, these transport systems have also been increasingly used in urban areas and are no longer a niche public transportation technology (Hoffmann 2006, Alshalalfah, Shalaby, and Dale 2014). Cable cars systems compete with performance characteristics of other more common urban transport technologies and have the potential to enhance the existing transport provision in cities (O'Connor and Dale 2011). While many applications can be found as transportation systems in airport facilities, and to provide access to tourist attractions, several metropolitan areas have even incorporated gondolas and aerial tramways into their public transport networks. This paper focuses on aerial ropeway systems that operate as a mass transit service (similar to buses, BRT, LRT, etc.) and are part of the public transit systems in their respective cities. Therefore, the analysis and case studies presented in the paper concern systems that are used as a public transit service

The contract model of the freight ropeways bearing cable and the saddle is established by FEM software, and the simulation calculation is carried out. The calculating formula for total contact pressure is fitted from the analysis result. According to setting requirement of the freight ropeway, simulation calculations of the different bearing cables are carried out under different operation conditions, and the relationships are obtained between contact pressure and influent factors, such as curvature radius of the saddle, the envelope angle and the drawing force. The results shows that contact pressure is in inverse proportion to the curvature radius of the saddle, in direct proportion to envelope angles and drawing force of the cable. Friction force between the bearing cable and the saddle made of nylon, bronze and steel three different materials are summarized through field test, and the friction coefficients applicable to the saddle of different material are obtained in combination with simulation results of the touch models.

Abstract:
The article proposes a method of structural optimization of the hydraulic drive of mobile transport and reloading rope complexes based on special multi-axle chassis with increased carrying capacity and cross-country ability. At present, this type of technological machines can be considered as a new class of technological overground transport vehicles, which is an effective alternative to stationary freight ropeways for hard-to-reach areas with difficult terrain and, if necessary, the rapid deployment of transport and logistics operations. An algorithm for the formation of the Pareto set is considered, which consists of a variety of alternative versions of the hydraulic drive based on a combination of positive displacement pumps and hydraulic motors of permissible standard sizes. A criterion for choosing the Pareto-optimal solutions of the designed hydraulic drive is proposed, based on three quality indicators — the total mass of the hydraulic machines, the specific power and the efficiency of the hydraulic drive.

Abstract:
Whereas in some cities ropeways already belong to the transit system, in Germany they are better known from skiing in the alps or as tourist attractions that were implemented in relation to expositions as in Koblenz or Berlin. Nonetheless, a ropeway system has several advantages, which make it an interesting alternative in urban public transportation. In this paper, we investigate the varying attitude of residents and commuters towards a ropeway system and its potential on a route in the north of Munich. To get an impression of their opinion, we conducted an online survey focusing on route choice depending on transit mode and travel times. In general, the respondents had a positive attitude towards this novel option and rate it with similar attractiveness to subway. To investigate the demand for the ropeway, the results of the survey were used to add a new transportation mode in the VISUM model for transit in Munich.

Abstract:
As an important load-bearing component, steel wire ropes (WRs) are widely used in complex systems such as mine hoists, cranes, ropeways, elevators, oil rigs, and cable-stayed bridges. Non-destructive damage detection for WRs is an important way to assess damage states to guarantee WR’s reliability and safety. With intelligent sensors, signal processing, and pattern recognition technology developing rapidly, this field has made great progress. However, there is a lack of a systematic review on technologies or methods introduced and employed, as well as research summaries and prospects in recent years. In order to bridge this gap, and to promote the development of non-destructive detection technology for WRs, we present an overview of non-destructive damage detection research of WRs and discuss the core issues on this topic in this paper. First, the WRs’ damage type is introduced, and its causes are explained. Then, we summarize several main non-destructive detection methods for WRs, including electromagnetic detection method, optical detection method, ultrasonic guided wave detection method, and acoustic emission detection method. Finally, a prospect is put forward. Based on the review of papers, we provide insight about the future of the non-destructive damage detection methods for steel WRs to a certain extent.

Abstract:
Mobile ropeways for carrying out loading and unloading and transport and transfer operations in previously unsettled or inaccessible areas, formed with the help of terminal base stations connected by a single rope system on the basis of self-propelled wheeled or tracked chassis of increased carrying capacity and cross-country ability, are a promising type of lifting and transport equipment ensuring the prompt deployment of the necessary technological tools. The article deals with the layout of the mechanism for installing and fixing the end tower using a folding bar, consisting of two articulated links. A mathematical model has been developed that provides the required normative vertical dimension of a self-propelled base station of a mobile ropeway with the aim of its safe independent movement to the place of deployment of the ropeway along general roads. The analysis of the influence of standard dimensional requirements, design dimensions of the chassis carrying frame and the height of the end tower on the main design dimensions of the articulated folding rod in the transport position is carried out. Calculations have shown that the considered design makes it possible to provide the standard vertical dimension of a base station on a 6-axle self-propelled chassis with an end tower length of up to 18 m.

Abstract:
Introduction. The paper considers the creation and application of digital twins at various stages of the life cycle of mobile transport and transshipment rope complexes (mobile ropeways), the equipment of which is mounted on the basis of wheeled or tracked chassis of high load capacity. The work objective is to improve safety in using such transport systems based on real-time forecasting of potential failures. This will prevent the occurrence of emergencies in a timely manner. Materials and Methods. The structure of the digital twin of the mobile transport and transshipment rope complex is proposed. Approaches to the analysis of ongoing work processes in order to prevent accidents have been developed. They are based on simulation modeling of the system dynamics using new complex mathematical models built through the system approach. Results. The developed method was tested on a large-scale layout of a mobile transport and transshipment rope complex created by 3D printing methods. A mathematical model of this system was developed; it was used to construct a digital double of the experimental model. The possibility of predicting failures in the layout is shown experimentally through the example of a rope slipping case. To do this, the actual value of the load suspension point coordinate obtained through the video stream processing method was compared to the predicted value calculated using a digital twin.Discussion and Conclusions. The research results provide the creation of an industrial digital twin of a mobile transport and transshipment rope complex mounted on cross-country wheeled chassis.

Abstract:
Mobile ropeways formed by mobile transport and reloading rope complexes (terminal stations) on the basis of self-propelled wheeled chassis of high load capacity and cross-country ability are a promising type of transporting equipment for use in many branches of industrial production and maintenance – construction and mining industry, forestry and agriculture, elimination of the consequences of natural and man-made disasters, etc. The article develops a classification of self-propelled terminal stations based on such features as the location of the key element of the main technological equipment — the end tower of the rope system — on a wheeled chassis and the type of its fixation in the working position during the operation of the mobile ropeway. As promising variants of the structural design of mobile transport and technological rope complexes, options with an end, central and remote arrangement of the end tower; with hydraulic, rope, rope-hydraulic and rod types of fixing the end tower in the working position; with the installation of the end tower in the working position directly by a lifting hydraulic cylinder, using a folding rod and two-stage lifting are proposed. A brief description of the designs and the principle of operation of a large number of modifications of self-propelled terminal stations of various listed variants of the structural design of mobile rope complexes is given when preparing them for operation and during operation itself. A comparative analysis of the considered variants of mobile rope complexes is carried out on the basis of taking into account their main design and technical and economic characteristics, which made it possible to formulate both advantages and disadvantages of different design options.
