As visualized by three filmmakers from outside Catalonia, Barcelona functions as the backdrop to geographic and emotional displacement: the city is a site of cultural (mis)understanaing; a space of clashes between tradition and a modernity identified with the tides of globalization; and a place where Catalan culture and nationalism coexist with and/or recede from the voluntary exile’s awareness. Roses are a high-value niche crop in the higher altitudes of northeastern Brazil. From July of 2007 and throughout 2008, severe stem rot and wilting of rose seedlings were observed in commercial fields in the São Benedito District, Ceará State, Brazil. Although economic losses due to the disease are unknown, it poses a threat to the growing rose industry in that region. Symptoms included leaf yellowing and abscission followed by plant collapse. Symptoms appeared earlier when grafted seedlings were produced during periods of high relative humidity (80 to 98%) and warm temperatures (20 to 31°C).

The present research examined age differences in self-liking (an important component of self-esteem) across a broad range of the population in Japan, from elementary school students to the elderly. Previous research in the U.S. has shown that self-esteem levels in childhood are high, decline during adolescence, rise gradually in adulthood and drop in old age. However, it was unclear whether this pattern holds for other cultures. As self-esteem is significantly affected by culture, it is important to reveal its developmental trajectory not only in European American cultures, but also in other c

This article analyses Ann-Marie MacDonald’s 2014 novel Adult Onset as a text that brings the developmental literature of middle age into conversation with queer theories of temporality, family, and adulthood. Specifically, the novel invokes the narrative of the “mid-life crisis” to interrogate the concepts of queer progress and successful aging that its protagonist, a married lesbian mother and celebrated author named Mary Rose MacKinnon, outwardly embodies. Linking Mary Rose’s mid-life crisis with Jack Halberstam’s theory of “queer failure,” I argue that the text articulates a critique of the

Abstract Sex sells, as any publisher knows. That much was true in the second century too, though it seems a little magic and a lot of learning could be usefully added to the mix. The proof of this contention may be found in The Golden Ass, the celebrated novel of (?Lucius) Apuleius (c.125-70 CE) who came from Madaura in the province of Africa. Known formally as The Metamorphoses, this is the only Latin novel to survive complete from antiquity, and a remarkable piece of work it is (cf. pp. 218-20). It was a process by which new cultural developments became part of a broader mentalité. The focus of this chapter is to examine the concrete ways in which Catholic culture was domesticated in burgher homes over the seventeenth century. It examines how Counter-Reformation styles and themes permeated domestic objects, how Counter-Reformation images were newly integrated into domestic scenes, and how new materi

Abstract The minstrel songs of Stephen Foster (1826–64) have long been a staple of the North American sing-along repertoire. Before World War I they provided the foundation for public community singing events intended to elevate musical tastes and shape national identity, while in later decades they were sung by theatergoers, club members, and family groups. In the period spanning 1913 to 2003, the collective singing of Foster songs was facilitated by print, broadcast, and recorded media, each instance of which interpreted the songs’ significance by means of images, texts, and contexts.
