Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Takashi Ooi of Nagoya University effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 12240) the enantioselective protonation of ketene silyl acetals such as 1 to give 2 in high ee. Hyeon-Kyu Lee of the Korean Research Institute of Chemical Technology achieved (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4184) high ee in the hydrogenation of the cyclic sulfamidate 3 to 4. Doo Ok Jang of Yonsei University combined (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 12168) the nucleophilic allyl indium with a protonated chiral amine to effect homologation of 5 to 6. Ryo Shintani and Tamio Hayashi of Kyoto University reported (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4106) a related advance with tetraarylborates. Kazuaki Ishihara, also of Nagoya University (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 3502) and Yoshihiro Sohtome and Kazuo Nagasawa of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 9254) devised conditions for adding malonate to imines such as 7. Professors Shintani and Hayashi also employed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 13168) tetraarylborates to convert 9 to the α-quaternary amine 10. Professor Ooi (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 5567) and Wanbin Zhang of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 15939) prepared α-quaternary amino acids such as 12 by nucleophilic rearrangement of 11. Keiji Maruoka, also of Kyoto University, reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 17074; not illustrated) a catalytic enantioselective conjugate addition approach to α-quaternary amines. Shuji Akai of the University of Shizuoka converted (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 4900) the racemic allylic alcohol 13 to the enantiomerically enriched acetate 14 by combining V-catalyzed equilibration with lipase-catalyzed acylation. Toshiro Harada of the Kyoto Institute of Technology added (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 5270) the alkenylboron 16 to the aldehyde 15 with high ee. Xiang Zhou of Wuhan University and Lin Pu of the University of Virginia significantly improved (Tetrahedron Lett . 2010, 51, 5024) a protocol for the enantioselective addition of aliphatic alkynes to aliphatic aldehydes. For other enantioselective additions to aldehydes (not illustrated), see J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75 , 5326 and Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 5088.

Abstract:
Hideki Yorimitsu and Koichiro Oshima of Kyoto University observed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 8878) that Rh-catalyzed addition of 2 to a terminal allene 1 generated an allylic organometallic, which coupled with electrophiles to give the branched product 3. Regan J. Thomson of Northwestern University devised (Nat. Chem. 2010, 2, 294) the reagent 5, which added to an aldehyde 4 to give the reduced allylically coupled product 6. Nuno Maulide of the Max-Planck-Institut, Mülheim, noted (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 1583) the remarkable rearrangement of 7 to 8. Jon A. Tunge of the University of Kansas showed (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 740) that nitronate allylation could be effected by the Pd-mediated decarboxylation of 9. Takashi Tomioka of the University of Mississippi developed (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 2171) a convenient reagent for the conversion of an aldehyde 11 to the Z -unsaturated nitrile 12 . Xiaodong Shi of the University of West Virginia established (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 2088) that Au-mediated rearrangement of 13 led to the Z -iodo enone 14. T. V. RajanBabu of Ohio State University developed (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 2622) a Pd catalyst for the selective double functionalization of a terminal alkyne 15 to the stannane 16. The subsequent tandem Stille and Suzuki couplings proceeded efficiently. The controlled construction of tetrasubstituted alkenes is particularly challenging. Kohei Endo and Takanori Shibata of Waseda University put forward (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 3469) what promises to be a general solution to this problem: the addition of the bis-boronate 17 to a ketone 18. Alkynes are usually prepared by direct alkylation. Gérard Cahiez of the Université de Paris 13 established (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 1278) an alternative: the coupling of a Grignard reagent with a 1-bromoalkyne 20. Gregory B. Dudley of Florida State University developed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 3260) a complementary route to internal alkynes based on the fragmentation of 22. Enantiomerically pure allenes are ubiquitous components of physiologically active natural products. Weiping Tang of the University of Wisconsin optimized (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 3664) the bromolactonization of a Z enyne 24 to give the allene 25.

Abstract:
A vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) prototype is being developed at West Virginia University that utilizes circulation control to enhance its performance. An airfoil was chosen for this turbine based on its performance potential, and ability to incorporate circulation control. The selection process for the airfoil involved the consideration of camber, blade thickness, and trailing edge radius and the corresponding impact on the lift and drag coefficients. The airfoil showing the highest lift/drag ratio augmentation, compared to the corresponding unmodified airfoil was determined to be the most likely shape for use on the circulation control augmented vertical axis wind turbine. The airfoils selected for this initial investigation were the NACA0018, NACA2418, 18% thick elliptical, NACA0021, and the SNLA2150. The airfoils were compared using the computational fluid dynamics program FLUENT v.6.3.26 with a blowing coefficient of 1% [1]. The size of the trailing edge radius and the slot heights were varied based on past experimental data [2]. The three trailing edge radii and two blowing slot heights were investigated. The thickness of the airfoil impacts the circulation control performance [3], thus it was studied by scaling the NACA0018 to a 21% thickness and compared to an SNLA2150 airfoil. The airfoils’ lift and drag coefficients were compared to determine the most improved lift-drag ratio (L/D). When comparing the increases of the L/D due to circulation control, the NACA0018 and 2418 airfoils were found to outperform the elliptical airfoil; the NACA0018 performed slightly better than the 2418 when comparing the same ratio L/D. The results showed that the 21% thick airfoils produced a decreased L/D profile compared to the NACA0018 airfoils. Therefore, the NACA0018 was found to be the optimal airfoil based from this initial investigation due to an increased L/D compared to the other airfoils tested.
