Full text
Abstract:
Fish, and other vertebrates, possess both a neural control system and a hormonal one dependent on the circulation. Fish hormones may be secreted by well-defined endocrine glands or by diffuse tissue and can have profound effects on the function of target tissues or organs which possess receptor molecules recognized by specific hormones. Some endocrine activities in fish are not relevant to mammals, and vice versa. Thus fish can have chromatophores controlled hormonally to change skin colour, the same hormones having different roles in mammals. Likewise, ‘prolactin’ in fish cannot regulate lactation. Individual endocrine glands, tissues and cells of fish are described in detail and the possible roles of their hormones are discussed. Fish endocrinology is becoming increasingly important with the realization of its potential applications in aquaculture and with the recognition of the consequences of pollutant endocrine disruption.

Altman, Scott. Parental Control Rights. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786429.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Parents typically direct many aspects of their children’s lives and often believe that they deserve protection from interference by governments and third parties. Justifications for such parental control rights sometimes rely on the interests of children or of society. But they can also rely directly on parental interests. This paper considers whether parental control rights can be justified based on parental interests. It first considers two parental interests sometimes put forward as warranting parental control rights: an interest in intimacy and an interest in acting as a fiduciary. The first fails as a justification for parental rights because intimacy is unlikely to be undermined by most intrusions. The second fails because it misunderstands the nature of fiduciary roles. The paper then considers an alternative parental interest in nurturing, counselling, and educating. This interest requires both authenticity and discretion to play a meaningful role in a parent’s life and facilitating this interest warrants protecting parental control rights.

Scott-Brown, Martin. Symptom control in cancer. Edited by Patrick Davey and David Sprigings. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199568741.003.0329.

Full text
Abstract:
Treatment in cancer is aimed at improving survival (curing where possible) and/or improving symptoms. Symptoms may be caused by the cancer itself (primary tumour, metastases, or paraneoplastic phenomenon) or by the treatments patients undergo to treat the cancer (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and biological therapy). Therefore, symptom control is one of the key roles of oncologists as they treat cancer patients. The most important part of symptom control in cancer patients is to elucidate the underlying cause of the symptom. Symptom control is most effective when the underlying cause is targeted; for example, shoulder pain may be treated most effectively by local radiotherapy if it is due to a bone metastasis in the humeral head, by dexamethasone if it is referred pain due to diaphragmatic irritation from hepatomegaly, and by amitriptyline or gabapentin if it is neuropathic pain due to cervical nerve root irritation. Covering all symptom control in cancer patients is beyond the remit of this chapter; however, it will cover the control of pain and nausea and vomiting, as these are very common symptoms in cancer patients.

Abstract:
The complexity of fish behaviour and information processing indicates high levels of neural, anatomical and functional organization. Neural cells are conducting neurons and neuroglia with putative support and physiological roles. Neuronal conduction, synaptic transmission, reflexes and neuropils are factors in integrative activity and information processing. Fish nervous systems are organized into central (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral (including autonomic) components. Interestingly the structure and function of the fish optic tectum have been considered comparable to those of the tetrapod cerebral cortex. Also of interest are the bilaterally paired large Mauthner fibres in the teleost central nervous system, which mediate startle responses. The autonomic nervous system in fish occupies a pivotal position amongst vertebrates, including uncertainty about the existence of a posterior parasympathetic component. The trend is to regard it in terms of spinal autonomic (sympathetic) cranial autonomic (parasympathetic) and enteric systems. Accounts of the autonomic control of individual effector systems are included.
