Abstract:

Abstract:
For medical application, easily accessible biomaterials with tailored properties are desirable. Collagen type I represents a biomaterial of choice for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Here, we present a simple method to modify the properties of collagen and to generate collagen laminates. We selected three commercially available collagen sheets with different thicknesses and densities and examined the effect of rose bengal and green light collagen crosslinking (RGX) on properties such as microstructure, swelling degree, mechanical stability, cell compatibility and drug release. The highest impact of RGX was measured for Atelocollagen, for which the swelling degree was reduced from 630% (w/w) to 520% (w/w) and thickness measured under force application increased from 0.014 mm to 0.455 mm, indicating a significant increase in mechanical stability. Microstructural analysis revealed that the sponge-like structure was replaced by a fibrous structure. While the initial burst effect during vancomycin release was not influenced by crosslinking, RGX increased cell proliferation on sheets of Atelocollagen and on Collagen Solutions. We furthermore demonstrate that RGX can be used to covalently attach different sheets to create materials with combined properties, making the modification and combination of readily available sheets with RGX an attractive approach for clinical application.

Abstract:
Southern Argolis Peninsula is an interesting Geological and Geomorphological area due to the variety of the geological structures and the interchange on the terrain. Ground and remote sensing data, relating to geology and tectonics, were compiled with terrain analysis data in a GIS data base, in order to perform morpho-tectonic analysis in the Southern Argolis Peninsula. Terrain analysis data were automatically produced by the specific software “PROANA” (based on ArcGIS). The main direction of Southern Argolis Terrain is E-W. The same direction is observed from the rose-diagrams of morphological discontinuities. The hydrographic network has a NW-SE main direction. The depositional planation surfaces (0-5%) that are located near the coast are related with neotectonic faults. The direction of the Faulting Zones is mainly ESE-WNW and E-W. The most active tectonic structures were observed to the southern and south-western area of Southern Argolis Peninsula, towards Kranidi and Argolikos Gulf.

Abstract:
Background: Laser irradiation of the semicircular canal (SCC) is a good treatment for intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. However, there were few reports on the temperature changes during laser irradiation. Objective: To measure the internal temperature of the SCC and vestibule during green laser irradiation of the SCC and investigate morphologic changes using human temporal bones. Methods: After the lateral SCC was blue-lined, a thermocouple was inserted into the SCC through a hole made in the canal wall. Another thermocouple was inserted into the vestibule through the oval window. Green laser was irradiated to the lateral canal wall. After the irradiation, the tissues were inspected as paraffin using HE staining. Result: The internal temperature of the SCC rose from 33 ° to 52 °C by a single laser irradiation of 1.5 W × 2 seconds and 82 °C by a single laser irradiation of 1.7 W × 3 seconds to the canal wall with a black spot. Continuous laser irradiation of 1.5 W × 3 seconds, 10 times resulted in a temperature rise of 92 °C from 33 °C. Throughout the whole experiments, temperatures within the vestibule were unchanged. Histopathology showed that the irradiated areas of the lateral canal wall were partially deficient with or without carbonization after single irradiation. By continuous laser irradiations, the SCC bony wall showed a peroration of 40 µm in diameter with carbonized edges. Conclusions: Green laser irradiation of the SCC produced char formation with perforation in the canal wall. High temperatures within the SCC were recorded for a short period of less than 30 seconds. However, the vestibule didn’t show temperature changes.

Abstract:
Using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and the tracer indocyanine green (ICG), we quantified blood flow in calf muscle and around the Achilles tendon during plantar flexion (1–9 W). For comparison, blood flow in calf muscle was determined by dye dilution in combination with magnetic resonance imaging measures of muscle volume, and, for the peritendon region, blood flow was measured by 133Xe washout. From rest to a peak load of 9 W, NIRS-ICG blood flow in calf muscle increased from 2.4 ± 0.2 to 74 ± 5 ml · 100 ml tissue−1 · min−1, similar to that measured by reverse dye (77 ± 6 ml · 100 ml tissue−1 · min−1). Achilles peritendon blood flow measured by NIRS-ICG rose with exercise from 2.2 ± 0.5 to 15.1 ± 0.2 ml · 100 ml−1 · min−1, which was similar to that determined by 133Xe washout (2.0 ± 0.6 to 14.6 ± 0.3 ml · 100 ml tissue−1 · min−1). This is the first study using NIRS and ICG to quantify regional tissue blood flow during exercise in humans. Due to its high spatial and temporal resolution, the technique may be useful for determining regional blood flow distribution and regulation during exercise in humans.

Abstract:
To test the applicability of a dye-dilution method to quantitate total arm blood flow at rest and during arm exercise, indocyanine green was infused at a constant rate into the brachial artery. Eight subjects performed continuous 30-min arm exercises with an increase in intensity every 10 min (30, 60, and 90 W). The loads corresponded to 29 +/- 1, 48 +/- 2, and 78 +/- 4% (means +/- SE) of the maximal O2 uptake (VO2max 2.13 +/- 0.08 l/min) during arm exercise. VO2max during arm exercise was 61 +/- 1.7% of that during leg exercise. The dye concentration was analyzed in blood samples from three arm veins, two ipsi- and one contralateral, at shoulder level. Corresponding dye concentrations in both ipsilateral veins and a stable concentration difference between ipsi- and contralateral veins were achieved. Total arm blood flow was calculated to be 0.21 +/- 0.04 l/min at rest and 2.43 +/- 0.14 l/min at 90 W. Arm O2 uptake rose from 9 +/- 2 to 323 +/- 21 ml/min. Arm blood flow and O2 uptake each correlated linearly with both work load (r = 0.98) and pulmonary O2 uptake (r greater than or equal to 0.98). Mechanical efficiency for the arm and body was 34-44 and 16-19%, respectively. We conclude that arm blood flow can be determined by continuous infusion of indocyanine green.

Abstract:
This study deals with treatment-dependent differences in sensitivity of Antarctic filamentous alga Zygnema sp. to photoinhibition. Zygnema sp. (strain EEL201) was collected at the James Ross Island, Antarctica (57° 52´ 57´´ W, 63° 48´ 02´´ S). In a laboratory, the alga was cultivated on agar first and then innoculated to liquid medium. They were exposed to a short-term (30 min.) high light (HL) treatments. Particular treatments comprised 600, 1 400 and 2 100 and 3 500 μmol m-2 s-1 of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Photosynthetic efficiency of Zygnema sp. in individual HL treatments was monitored by chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, potential (FV/FM) and actual (FPSII) quantum yield of photochemical processes in photosystem II in particular. Zygnema sp. showed a high resistance to HL since it both chlorophyll fluorescence parameters recovered to about 70% of initial values after 4 h in dark. Chlorophyll fluorescence measured immediately after particular treatment, showed HL-dependent decrease in absolute values of chlorophyll fluorescence signal and consequent uncompleted recovery as well. Quenching of F0, an indicator of changes in light-harvesting complexes of photosystem II, did not show dose-dependent response, however, general trend was a decrease found immediately HL treatment with consequent uncompleated recovery. In general, Zygnema sp. exhibited high resistance to PAR doses that the species can whitness in the field during austral summer. Thus the species could be considered highly adapted for high light and has effective mechanisms to cope with photoinhibition. Involvement of particular photoprotective mechanism, their activation and share in natural environment is a topic for future studies.

Abstract:
When Candyman was released in 1992, Roger Ebert gave it his thumbs up, remarking that the film was “scaring him with ideas and gore, rather than just gore.” Indeed, Candyman is almost unique in 1990s horror cinema in that it tackles its sociopolitical themes head on. As critic Kirsten Moana Thompson has remarked, Candyman is “the return of the repressed as national allegory”: the film's hook-handed killer of urban legend embodies a history of racism, miscegenation, lynching, and slavery, “the taboo secrets of America's past and present.” This book considers how Candyman might be read both as a “return of the repressed” during the George H. W. Bush era, and as an example of 1990s neoconservative horror. It traces the project's development from its origins as a Clive Barker short story (The Forbidden); discusses the importance of its gritty real-life Cabrini-Green setting; and analyzes the film's appropriation (and interrogation) of urban myth. The two official sequels (Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh [1995] and Candyman: Day of the Dead [1999]) are also considered, plus a number of other urban myth-inspired horror movies such as Bloody Mary (2006) and films in the Urban Legend franchise. The book features an in-depth interview with Candyman's writer-director Bernard Rose.
